I was simply making the point that those who feel that the popular forms of music are 'not as good as they were' in the 'good old days' (whenever they were) should cast their net wider perhaps, and look beyond those genres.

Oh lordy, it's another one of THOSE threads.... Since I got more into world music about 10/15 years ago I realised that there is a vast ocean of music to swim through. Life is short, why restrict one's musical palate to the straight jacket that is pop/rock/funk/r&b or whatever. There is loads of great music being made out there RIGHT NOW, it's just not in the traditionally popular genres. So what if I've never heard album XXX by YYY from 1960 blah blah blah... I certainly don't feel like I'm missing out, in fact I know I'm not.

I have an SG1000 and I love the thick round tone that I can get from the humbuckers. It also has the advantage of being fitted with coil taps so I can get that single coil vibe too. Again, I think it's all about how you sculpt your amp tone (in my case in via Guitar Rig) to get the sound of the guitar to sit nicely in the mix.

[/quote] I'm 49 (from Birkenhead) and no one that I knew around my age was really interested in the Beatles when I got into playing music in the late 70s early 80s. It was great. There was a sense of optimism and people were looking forward. Now we have this endless nostalgia BS and this whole Beatles tourism industry. Tedious.

Nah. I listened to the album but I was done 2 songs in. She undoubtedly has a great voice but the material leaves me stone cold I'm afraid. Schmaltzy beyond belief, and just boring.

[/quote] No. There are infinite possibilities contained within the notes on a bass and the order, speed, spacing, dynamics, techniques etc etc with which one chooses to play them. Every time you pick up the bass there is the possibility of playing something that has never been done before. This is why I'm still excited about playing after 35 years. -
Lots of pro players seems to use a degree of compression all the time (Marcus Miller, Tony Levin to name a couple of examples). Perhaps they need to sort out their technique... what do you think?

I like to use at least some as I prefer the way it makes the bass sound in the mix. I don't need to use it but it just sounds better to my ears. Fatter and punchier. There does seem to be some kind of purist snobbery that kicks in as soon as compression gets mentioned.
