And music not only being made around the world RIGHT NOW but there is 70-odd years worth of world recordings readily available over the internet. Most of it is music that most people have not heard.
Of course there is, just like there are 1000s of great books in the library... I was simply making the point that those who feel that the popular forms of music are 'not as good as they were' in the 'good old days' (whenever they were) should cast their net wider perhaps, and look beyond those genres.
 2. Oh lordy, it's another one of THOSE threads.... Since I got more into world music about 10/15 years ago I realised that there is a vast ocean of music to swim through. Life is short, why restrict one's musical palate to the straight jacket that is pop/rock/funk/r&b or whatever. There is loads of great music being made out there RIGHT NOW, it's just not in the traditionally popular genres. So what if I've never heard album XXX by YYY from 1960 blah blah blah... I certainly don't feel like I'm missing out, in fact I know I'm not.
 3.
Bah! That's not because of the song itself, but just because it's connected to your fave pastime!
Well that and Breaking Glass...
 4. Never his biggest fan tbh but I've always had a soft spot for the Low album.. fave track is probably Always Crashing the Same Car
 5. I haven't had time to finish something this month (I did have a germ of an idea).... I'm busy moving flats so just too much to do unfortunately. I will make sure I vote though.
 6.
But does he like Jaco?
He likes grecian 2000.
 7. I have an SG1000 and I love the thick round tone that I can get from the humbuckers. It also has the advantage of being fitted with coil taps so I can get that single coil vibe too. Again, I think it's all about how you sculpt your amp tone (in my case in via Guitar Rig) to get the sound of the guitar to sit nicely in the mix.
 8.
And the 20 something's might call what you were into in the late 70s and early 80s as nostalgia. BS. Blue
The stuff I was into doesn't have a tourism industry built around it. I'm sure there are no Japanese tourists coming to Liverpool to see where Les Pattinson once lived. Your comment doesn't make any sense frankly.
 9.
That seems to be another of those, "I don`t like it, so no one should" comments that seems to be pretty prevalent on these boards lately. I don`t really understand why people want to go to Liverpool, but people are free to spend their money how they choose.
Nah, not really. I just think it shows a spectacular lack of imagination and I find it a bit depressing.
 10.
If it brings jobs and money to the area, then that has to be a good thing doesn`t it?
If people are dumb enough to stand and gawp at the Cavern that isn't really the Cavern then I guess they deserve to be exploited....
 11.
So, has Macca influeced me as a 50 year old newbie bassist born in the same ward as Lennon? Well, 8 days a week is a seriously good test for playing live. Sometimes I can even look up and smile... And yes, the Beatles as a whole are still a huge influence round here. (Liverpool and Wirral) Sure there was a period where they dipped in popularity, but every time the pendulum swings one way it swings the other, thy had to go 'out' until they could come back 'in'. I think we are lucky to have Blue and his US perpective. The UK would fit into a single state, teritory wise. The physical distance between The Mersey beat and Madchester would be microscopic by US standards. And thus the differences between the UK centres uninteligibley small. The US is sooooooooo big and everywhere soooooooo far away along roads that are sooooooooo similar that personalities take on much greater importance than here in the UK. I can, if I want go sit in the same seat in the same pub they drank in on Mathew Street today. I can go see people play tonight who knew Macca and the rest first hand. I'll probably be jamming with some this afternoon without knowing. Hell, I can even book the Quarrymen to play in my lounge if want to. I'm saying perspective depends on distance from the object being viewed.
I'm 49 (from Birkenhead) and no one that I knew around my age was really interested in the Beatles when I got into playing music in the late 70s early 80s. It was great. There was a sense of optimism and people were looking forward. Now we have this endless nostalgia BS and this whole Beatles tourism industry. Tedious.
 12. Maybe it's this though?
 13. Ha, I saw the thread title and immediately thought of No More Heroes!
 14. Dutch Uncles - O Shudder Off to see them in Leeds tomorrow! Yayy!!!
 15.
Help, please. I get McCartney, but not Pastorius. Do I continue to play bass or not?
Only if you play it live like a proper musician, and aren't one of those terrible bedroom noodlers...
 16.
You're obviously forgetting Mark Knopfler.......
Well I was trying my best to. Then I saw the photo someone posted above... Just no.
 17.
How do I put this ? I can understand how influential he is and appreciate his talent, his legacy, and so on....but that whole headband thing. Sorry, it just kills it for me.
Indeed. Apart from Bjorn Borg, no one ever looks good in a headband.
 18. Nah. I listened to the album but I was done 2 songs in. She undoubtedly has a great voice but the material leaves me stone cold I'm afraid. Schmaltzy beyond belief, and just boring.
 19.
Who are they..?
A popular beat combo from around these parts I believe... overrated from what I've heard
 20. PIL with Wobble and Levine, although I suspect it would have been a bit shambolic.. they were pretty good when I saw them a couple of years ago though. The Teardrop Explodes - I was going to go and see them in Liverpool in 80 or 81 but didn't for some reason that escapes me now Zappa on his last tour - what a great band Joy Division Can
 21.
are we just doomed to play the great bass lines of the past?
No. There are infinite possibilities contained within the notes on a bass and the order, speed, spacing, dynamics, techniques etc etc with which one chooses to play them. Every time you pick up the bass there is the possibility of playing something that has never been done before. This is why I'm still excited about playing after 35 years.
 22. Lots of pro players seems to use a degree of compression all the time (Marcus Miller, Tony Levin to name a couple of examples). Perhaps they need to sort out their technique... what do you think?
 23.
You're right there! I think this aversion to compression has come about because of the modern mixing methods, and the over-produced sound most modern music has, both live and in the studio, however that's only the case in a few songs/albums in the scheme of things. As for using compression, I do indeed use it. I feel for me, it controls my playing, taking peaks off when I let my right hand get away from me, and helping to add a tighter sound to my rig, which is hard to get without the use of compression. It's great when you know what it does, and how to use it!
I can totally understand the aversion to over-produced over-compressed music. Most modern chart music sounds that way to my ears. That's no reason to throw the baby out with the bath water though.
 24.
I know I'm repeating myself from similar threads in the effects forum, but compression does not remove your ability to play "with dynamics", depending on what you mean by that. If you want to be able to play louder and quieter using only the power of your fingers, this can still be achieved with a compressor in the chain. I use a compressor to reduce the initial transient peaks of any notes with a particularly hard attack. This is an effect which is pretty much inaudible, but will hopefully give some protection to my rig. I still manage to alter my perceived volume using only my fingers. I also sometimes use compression with a slow attack to give me more punch. Again, as long as I get the threshold right, I can still "play with dynamics"
+1 Lots of pro players seem to use compression all the time. I like to use at least some as I prefer the way it makes the bass sound in the mix. I don't need to use it but it just sounds better to my ears. Fatter and punchier. There does seem to be some kind of purist snobbery that kicks in as soon as compression gets mentioned.
