2.
Apparently I put on a 'sex face' when I'm playing in an intense live situation. I've also noticed I stand on one leg a lot.
As long as you don't make a sex noise too....
3. Apparently I wobble my knees when I play...hence the moniker. I've been subjected to skits by my mates about this for nearly 30 years, so now I simply embrace the fact...makes life much easier!
4.
You got any DR's left?
The BBs have gone and I have an offer on the sunbeams...if they don't go, I'll let you know.
5.
MB1. No strings for me! Mr Jelly but That KGB gets you a BUMP though!
ta very much...it is a splendid bit of wood
6. I've done a lot of experimenting with various strings on my fretless over the last year, and have a number of sets of bass strings I didn't get on with that I'm looking to sell on...also, I've just split up with my wife so I need every penny at the moment... The 2 DR sets did a gig each, but none of them were on the bass for more than a couple of weeks. They have all been cut to fit my tune bass, see here... 7.
My current band is definitely the least mellow I've ever been in...
Personally I find it a bit incongruous to see older dudes really ‘rocking out’, but whatever floats your boat I guess...
8. I've just turned 45 and I think that my current original band which I started 5 years ago is by far the best thing I've ever been involved in from both a songwriting and musicianship point of view... But then my motivation has never really been to 'make it', apart from a few brief delusional years in my late teens perhaps. I do it for the same reason I've always done it - because i love it, the whole process from coming up with ideas, song development and recording right through to live performance. If someone happened to give us the opportunity to do it full time and give up the day job, I'd bite their hand off of course... Provided it's still fun and gives me a creative outlet, then I'm going to keep doing it as long as I physically can. What I do will probably mellow as I get older, but why stop if you enjoy it?
9. I'd suggest one of these as a good budget fretless. http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Vintage-V940FL-Fretless-Bass-Guitar-Natural/5CT I got one when I decided to get back into fretless after a a gap of nearly 20 years. They are excellent value for money, very solid and pretty versatile with a decent sound.
10. Good gear will not make a bad player sound any better. A good player will be able to get an ok sound out of almost anything, but will definitely sound better when playing a decent instrument. You just can't get subtlety and nuance out of a cheapo plank of wood with crappy pickups. I agree that there is a limit beyond which the gains to be had by spending more money become smaller, but a good quality instrument definitely helps in ones develoment as a player. I got my handmade bass when I was 23 (I'm now 45) and I think it has helped my playing enormously down the years - by far the best £800 I ever spent. Maybe I was just incredibly lucky and found a great bass that worked for me, but I've never had any desire to change it either.
11. this is what u need.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLo5jWTeHfc ...but seriously, it's all about the spaces between the notes and the interplay with the drums - there is no formula, but it has to be loose and unforced

13. Recently binned a Whirlwind that I bought back in the early '90s as it was getting a bit crackly....using Pirahna leads now (neutrik jacks) as that's what my local music stores stocks, they seem pretty good so far....
14.
Do you play for Ceelo Green by any chance?
Sorry, don't get that one???
15.
Neal, it was most probably the neck. The core of the string determins the overall length and wouldn't expand that much given the relatively short length of the string.
K, thanks Steve...I've never had this happen with any bass before, but then I don't think I've ever played in quite such an extreme environment either!
16. Mmmm ok.... but surely the truss rod would expand in the heat which would reduce the tension in it and cause an increase in the relief of the neck, thus effectively raising the action?
17. I've been using DR Sunbeams on my Tunebass fretless for the last couple of months - I really like the smooth feel of them, the lower tension and they seem to work well with the piezo pickups, however.... We did a gig last weekend at Fort Perch Rock in New Brighton - an interesting place to play, built in the 1820s to defend Liverpool from the threat from France at that time, Napoleon and all that stuff...but I digress. We went on at 2.30 in the afternoon, onto a stage that was in direct sunlight. It was hotter than the filling inside of a microwaved apple pie. I couldn't see the readout on my zoom effects pedal, but I could live with that, just about (I can count and I can tune up by ear from our singer's piano). Anyway, we started playing - the sound wasn't great, probably because there was some DJ with a neck tatttoo playing god-awful banging techno whilst we were setting up, but it was ok - I've played with a worse stage sound. The first four songs went well, then some very bad things started to happen with my bass. Basically, the strings had stretched to such an extent in the intense heat that it was causing notes on the D and G strings to 'choke' anywhere below around about the 7th fret. It took me the next 2 songs to fully grasp was happening, by which time we were onto our last number. I grabbed an allen key from my bag and did a quick onstage adjustment before the last song... So, unfortunately this has really put me off using Sunbeams again, at least for live performance - I don't think this would have happened with normal tension strings, or not to the extent that it would have made so much difference. So it's back to D'Addario nickel wound for now...

WOMAD!

Been to quite a few Womads down the years, but not this year unfortunately. Its a great event though - have a good one!
20. Hi Bob, I've spent the last couple of years trying out various half wound type strings on my piezo Tunebass fretless with much the same aim in mind. My conclusions so far are... D'Addario half rounds - a great sounding string with loads of oomph - I did stick with these for quite a while, but ultimately I found them to be too stiff for my tastes, even with the lightest guage. Status Hotwire Half wound - quite a good string feelwise, but I thought they lacked a little presence. Elite ground wound - too dull for me, almost as dull as a flatwound. Rotosound pressure wound - not bad, but not overwhelming either. Still not as good tonewise as the D'Addarios. Status tapewound - a nice sound and great feel but just not 'loud' enough - however they were quite a light gauge as far as tapewound strings go, and there are quite few other makes of tapewounds, so maybe some of the thicker gauge ones would work better. DR Sunbeams - I'd never tried DR strings before, partly due to the cost, but I really like these. They are really smooth to play and have a great tone. I tried the 40-60-80-100s first and they were a little bit too loose (they have a round core rather than a hex core), so I'm currently using a set of 45-65-85-105 and they're great. Plenty of tone, just the right flexibility and easy to slide your fingers on. Maybe a tad on the bright side but that's easily eq'd out - you can't add it, but you can take it away! String choice a very personal thing - there are so many factors that come into play, your bass, your technique, the kind of music you play etc etc, so ultimately the only way to find out is trial and error. If you are interested, I was thinking of selling some of these strings on - apart from the D'Addarios they are all hardly used, so if you want to try some out without some of the expense of buying new, let me know. Cheers, Neil
21. There's some rather odious muso snobbery going on in this thread. I saw her with Jeff Beck 2 years ago and I though she was fantastic. I'm not particularly into jazz fusion, I don't know how she compares to this player and that player, I don't study other player's techniques in detail and to be honest I find that whole style of playing general rather boring - great technical ability does not necessarily make for exciting music. Maybe Jeff Beck is wrong, but I'd be inclined to trust his judgement over most of the musicians on here.
