I hope JH is in good contract. Is RIC private or shareholders, if the latter I hope they realise the sterling work the CEO is doing to build sales with the UK premier bass player forum. Ironic part: I actually liked my RIC despite the 'faults' and would have considered buying another. Just so JH knows I am in the grey age bracket with disposable income. However bullying private individuals goes against my libertarian principles, so no new RIC for me. Sale lost JH.

What a way to generate business, good feeling and customer care. What a pity that many bass players (on this forum) might have been selling their 'copy' basses to move on to the real thing. Oh, now they can't because the CEO of 'real thing' does not want their money. I had the real thing, for about 10 years 1980 - 1990. Have not bought another, and now, will never. Do ask me about long term build quality by the way at any time.

Peavey Tour into Barefaced Big One - I was more than happy. Into Barefaced Dubster is just immense, I can make concrete floor at work vibrate Sound good imo as well.

Feeler: Would you buy a Musicman Sabre based preamp for £15? Update!
3below replied to tommorichards's topic in Bass Guitars
As with Rasta, if there is anyway it can be fitted to Warwick Corvette I am up for one. Corvette has four knobs, two vol, one blend, one tone, and dinky pots. When I am back home I will measure diameter if that helps. -

Quite a few basses seem to use small diameter pots and in the case of my Warwick Rockbass the larger CTS pots will not fit. Choice may be a good thing here ot the option above, board only. -

If the base plate on the lightweight ones is too small, cut larger one from plywood, drill suitable holes and cable tie on if in a hurry.
Whatever i can get away with, without it cutting out incessantly *grumbles*
Mine cut out, I found the problem. There is a thermal protection thermistor(I think) near the power supply. It is a disk shaped component that bridges two pcb boards and is mounted in turrets. It was not soldered in to one turret (push fit I guess). Soldered it in, no cut out problems again.

BB300, 1980s (I think) very beat up, but is superb bit of kit, solid and with a bit of fettling is on a par with my G&L and the USA precision I owned from new in 77. The plus is it was only £100 - result. Is almost cheaper to wear these basses out than have refrets on high end instruments.
Consider it is the amp that makes the tone not the valves. Modifying the preamp circuit and amount of gain is going to make far more difference to the punch and grit.
Fully agree, read Merlin's books, http://www.freewebs.com/valvewizard/ then get modding.

Biased viewpoint here.... get those TI flats on any one of your basses And, for Gary Mac... TI flats on my G&L SB1 immense, no shortage of harmonics /treble when needed, can do the Andy Fraser EB3 sound with it, clean hifi, a fair approximation of the Ric 4001 I once owned. They last forever, 7 yrs + on SB1 so despite initial £££ they work out cheap in long run. Big plus is zero fret wear as well.

Many years ago I 'upgraded' a 1958 EB2 to 1977 Precision. Wish I could downgrade back to the EB2, is the one bass I miss. Unlike horses, cars, wives, girlfriends, etc basses do not consume money. If you can afford to keep, keep. You will only regret it later.

Dependable current production EL34 valves?
3below replied to Beer of the Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
500V should be ok. Remove power tubes, clean contacts, inspect closely, may be worth changing any suspicious valve bases. I have found JJ tubes pretty good. Then again my Sound City and Marshall still have original (as far as I know) Mullards in and are still good to go . -
Hi Steve, I've had a DB in a micra so I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get it in a mondeo. Jake
Same here

Bump, this is a super cab, it was mine before for abot 3 yrs. Loud, clear and great tone with any amp I used. It is the best bass cab I have ever owned, only reason I swapped was I like the power of the Barefaced Dubster and am also building a fEARful 15/6. Lee is a great chap to deal with, so treat yourself to an ultimate bass cab.

What stopped you liking TIs?

So i got a guitar, and I got an amp now... where to start?
3below replied to LukeFRC's topic in Other Instruments
I so want to write tuning, however best advice is find guitarist who will give some time to show stuff. Enjoy. -
Kramer 4001 aluminium neck bass (aka string testing machine), just seems to have immense clarity through anything, is really a p bass on steroids. Seems good with cheapo practice combos, through my Fender super 60 guitar combo and quite a few bass amps. Plays very hi fi is best way to describe. MOTT I find whatever bass I play (mine, other peoples) I sound like me, is same with guitars as well.

Best Beatles song to play in a pub band?
3below replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
Best Beatles song, well that narrows it down , just so many good songs. -
Thanks for comments, my band can be b* frustrating, we have done a few gigs, everyone is very experienced (we are all 40s, 50s) and all are good musicians. We could be good pub/club/wedding band......... however work gets in the way, and life sometimes. Plus is all good friends, no egos, all grown up, and all in same situation, we just have fun when we do. Experience - you have - you are older than them, by a good margin, university of life, it counts.
-
Help them out, give them the benefit of your experience, but let them know it is not for you. When they get a new bass player wish them the best and move on. Music is supposed to be fun at whatever level you want to be involved at, keep it that way. Hope it all resolves well. My band (band is a bit optimistic lol), we are all in same job, have same pressures, it is just for fun, but is enjoyable, even when we go backwards from lack of rehearsals, commitment or whatever. We all know score and work around situations in our ageing years.

Looks great, makes me want one, I may get to have a fraction of Andy Fraser's talent one day. I Just hope it is not a neck diver at that money. Talking of money and basses, I bought a 2nd hand Chinese corvette 5 from a fellow bcer. The quality is beyond belief, it is just so well built. Is every bit as good as my two USA basses. I just do not see why mass produced basses can command price premiums these days. Bespoke luthier one offs fair enough.
