Andy Fraser - why wasn't I that good at 17/18? Eugene Wright - Brubeck the great concerts - a 1958 - 63 set of recordings that are phenomenal Kevin Marcotte - Colin Lake and Wellbottom - Bullet album - just love that bass tone & style Can't I have more than three? I just pick bits up from most things I listen to so it must be the last three bass players I listened to today who made me think 'yep that's good in that situation'.
I have to agree - I like my Tour 450 head but the sub octave on it is never used. It also does not seem to be particularly loud for a 450, when I hear these threads about people playing in loud rock bands and never needing to turn their 300W amps up beyond half, I'm normally well up to 75% on the tour 450 with a hartke 4 x 10 and a 1 x 15 cab attached.
Yes it was my Tour 700 I was alluding to - great tone with Barefaced Big One, I love it (Firebass 700 also delivers this). It is just insufficiently loud. I use the Tour 700 at full master and 50 ~ 75% preamp. I am up against a Peavey 20W valve combo and a Fender 40W valve combo! (The drummer can be a little powerful). My Marshall VBA400 and Soundcity 120 just leave Tour 700 trailing in the wake. However the Tour 700 tone is the business with my G&L. I want that tone but louder and then some. Useless amp features - Knobs that you can not see where they are quickly or on a dim / dark stage - chickenheads are the way to go. Knobs that project outside the cab / case edges - just looking for something to impact with and cause expensive damage. Numbers that have no relation to power - the Terminator 4500 which is a 45W peak power amp i.e. 22 W rms or so.

We decided to start a band at school and sort of chose what we would play. None of us had music lessons or tuition (and have never done so on 1st instruments to my knowledge - now I advise the kids I teach to do so - great time saver). Sax and bass were my call. Slade, Deep Purple, Mott the Hoople, Wizard, Hendrix and Steppenwolf have a lot to answer for. 38 ! years later, none of us are in same bands however all of us except one are still playing same instruments. I have played trumpet, sax and clarinet to a point, would be happy to do guitar in a band but simply prefer bass playing - and I'm much better now than I used to be (IMO), strangely a long period of not playing improved my playing - work that one out. So why am I a bass player - it just comes (super)naturally.

Marshall VBA 400 Marshall 7215 cab 4 ohms 600W Peavey Firebass 700 (will drive to 2 Ohms) Flight case for VBA Having just spent two days off work in excruciating pain with a trapped nerve I think my days of lifting are over and I must accept I am no longer 25 ! I am looking for £620 for the whole setup or Barefaced Big One in straight swap for the whole set up Am not interested in other trades - sorry. This will give you the VBA 400 with flight case, the 2 x 15 cab and a spare backup amp should you need it. The cab is built from birch ply with comb joints unlike current vbc cabs. It has Eminence something speakers. One side has been recovered and needs a little sticking down. I had planned to fit either Eminence Kappalite 3015s or 3015LFs to it. It is about the same internal volume as a fearful 1515/66. The ports are 15cm dia x 15 cm length. With a recover this will be an excellent solid cab. Marshall 7215 Edit: cab has a loose cover of sorts. When I bought the Marshall VBA I was assured that it has been serviced and had new power amp valves in last two years. I have no reason to disbelieve this. I replaced the cooling fans in the Peavey and they run quietly. The flight case is a bit tatty and is not an exact fit - it will help protect the head though. This will have to be a pick up from Mid Wales - about 40 mins from Shrewsbury. The plus is you will be able to try it out at volume - no near neighbours. regards Francis

Octaver on Peavey Tour. Power ratings that just don't seem to translate to loudness / headroom - I know it is about cabinets as well - but some amps do the business better irrespective of the alleged numbers.

Many years ago I had a 1958 EB2 - bought for £80 in about 1975 - very unpopular at the time. Nicely made, light and strong but I never really got a good tight tone out of it. Short scale, floppy strings, lots of bass, not a lot of punch. RS66 rotos gave it serious fret wear in a very short time. I dropped it - it fell off the strap - and bent a tuning peg, but the headstock did not snap. My feeling is that you must give these a pretty big knock to break the headstock. Before you shell out a lot of money try one out (or a Rivoli) if you can with your kit. It may work very well with modern amps / cabs. You may like it, you may not. I did not regret trading it in for a new precision in 1977.

A super bass - I had a 77 precision from new at university.... went through Gibbo EB2, Rick 4001, John Birch and settled on a G&L SB1 for last 20 years. Before you move it on (and possibly regret later) get a G&L MFD precision type pickup and give it a try in the precision - non invasive and easily returned back to original. I find it a many trick pony with no shortage of clank, grind, hi fi and all points in between. You have a mighty fine bass there.

What's wrong with "cog" ? - still taught & examined in A level Physics, or "com" if you prefer - (not that A level Physics is a measure of anything these days)

I have had good results with 'screw extractors' and a power screwdriver (seized bridge screws). Before going down this route try the tight fit flat head screwdriver first, or find a luthier who knows what they are doing. good luck

Following on from Stewart and currently having a Peavey Firebass with Big One, have you tried adjusting the contour control - seems unlikely but it might be a possible cause.

It's going to be the one variable at a time solution: try another bass - if 3 have the same problem, unlikely to be the bass try another amp or two with the same basses, leads and cab, problem goes away, its the amp problem stays try different guitar leads with original amp, bass and cab. problem stays try different speaker cables, same bass amp, cab, guitar lead problem stays try different cabs, original bass, amp and leads problem stays try different bassist (have to eliminate all possibilities - unlikely as it is) problem stays I give up... unless you can think of anything else to change does the problem happen if you play above D & G on the E/A strings, this might help identify a frequency problem against a pickup / string problem Apologies if you have gone down this road already, hope you get a solution

Flexibility I think. Currently use G&L SB1 with flats, Peavey Firebass 700 / SoundCity 120 and the Big One. Like the sound, lots of bass, cuts through mix, good midrange, but have felt underpowered in 500+ audience (they were just too close or deaf). No PA support. Peavey clipped rather too much. Why are drummers so loud? So looking for more headroom (and use for guitar) hence power amps, and flexibility in the pre amp - I play anything from folk to blues with HM / punk / Jazz inbetween (+ double bass) Saw your Acoustic combo, very nice - I lusted after one of these in my youth - I had the 370 cab with Hiwatt 200 in my 20s (when they were cheap and heavy) . These days I need the lighter kit.
-
Mmm, I hear what you are saying (but not for long I suspect). My one big one was adequate (450W applied) with an audience of 500+ but our drummer was heavy handed. I just want to have an adequate reserve to put him in his place. I will have to explore the nulls due to destructive interference - I have some bright students who can calculate this for me - I see an assignment coming on, that will stop their fun. Advice on preamp needed (seriously).

What is Motorhead? Is it loud? I saw a beat combo with some chap called Lemmy whilst at University, is he part of this outfit? I was hoping for adequate SPL to see off my drummer at the Kerry Lamb. Perhaps Santa might arrive properly this year. Last year he failed to bring the Morgan +8 (so did my wife for the last 30!).

Dear Santa or wife I have a big one, I think I need more How does this sound (apart from loud) , where would (could) I use it other than for demolition jobs? Peavey CS3000 or QSC PLX (for the rich) power amp, big one followed by a spare 3 big ones for those larger than average venues (and yes, my Honda CRV will take 4 big ones without the seats folded, respect to Alex) - should drive 1500 watts rms into each pair of big ones (two each side of drummer). cost approx £550 + 4 x £675 = £3259 What pre amp should I use? Alex, what SPL will I get? Best wishes from a happy big one owner (possibly the first second hand owner?), just want three more of the same.

Excellent transaction, good communication, arrived quickly and beautifully packed. Highly recommended . Thanks Lee.

Jazz flats - amongst the best strings I have used in 36 years bass playing. Mine are 5+ years on G&L SB1. It/they just stay in tune, hot cold, in/out of case. Plenty of zing/bite/treble. Slapping / level42 no problem No fret wear unlike rotos on my EB2 (though modern frets are probably much harder). Thomastiks on my double bass not a happy experience. Loud yes, projection yes, but tension and finger wear too much. A bit pricey - maybe, but over 5+ years they are not.
