Harley Benton DB02 need ideas for a better stand.
3below replied to bluzdog's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Cymbal or mic stands are a good starting point. Having tried both, I find the cymbal stand much more sturdy and confidence inspiring. My Clifton EUB has very simple L bracket on the back with a hole in it. 'Peg' from stand fits in the hole, end pin rests on floor and this is pretty solid. At some point I will either make a wooden block that sits between the stand, L bracket and back of bass or fix a block on the endpin which will stop the slight possible rotation of the bass. This image https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5472/30258177395_d1089c7f15_z.jpg taken by @Silvia Bluejay shows a cymbal stand into another Clifton EUB. This one is a better solution than the simple L bracket on mine. -
@grayn Great bass , but I am biased. Your account is like reading my own SG bass experience (even down to having an EB2 as first name bass about 50 years ago). Mine had slight neck dive so I fitted Hipshot ultralight tuners which has totally sorted the neck dive. I have also arrived at the one pickup on ten (full) and the other on nine approach. Mine now has additional mojo, the finish (brown) is wearing off at various points from use. One of the big pluses is the light weight which makes long gigs a pleasure.

I now prefer these in stainless: Although they claim to be self tapping I use an appropriate size tap (1st or 2nd tap depending on wood hardness) and thread the hole they are going into. The nut and bolt insertion method is required. Occasionally I have had to CA glue one in as well.

Easy if you can DIY or have sufficient funds to pay someone, otherwise it is as you say -

Would be easy enough to get a 'batwing' pickguard and have the neck pickup relocated towards the middle (like some later EB0/3 models) or get the neck pickup rewound to a lower impedance. Where is the brown / walnut colour one? not that I need another bass. -
As per @uncle psychosis and @velvetkevorkian a low cost alternative, the Peavey milestone in the for sale section (or there is one on ebay, £70 bin) and some s/h EMGs and you will be good to go. The necks on them seem very good to me and they are light weight. No neck dive due to the body design, an underrated bass imo.

Mounting the Hipshot on a curved top bass can be achieved with spacer collars and bolting it down onto them with M8 or 5/16" hex button screws. On my Bach EB2 I used collars on the main fixings and just a hex button screw under the front fixing. Works well. Getting Gold colour might be a bigger challenge. -

If I still had access to a lab I would be well up for measuring the effects that string length etc beyond the bridge and nut have on the deflection force required to pluck (or bend) a given string. The first approximation formula t = 4dT / L (t : deflection force, d : deflection, T : string tension and L : scale length) does not account for any movement beyond the fixed points (bridge, nut). Experimental measurement seems the way forward to get some answers. Some quick 'testing' by playing the G string hard and feeling for any string movement at the nut or beyond it suggests that the effects will be very small if any. -

Here's hoping you get fully active soon and get stuck in

^ +5 for recognising what it was / is.
-
^ solid good advice above (much of which I learned the hard way pre BC cab builds). In an ideal world speaker chassis would be designed differently too late now, tradition has the grip.
-
An interesting possibility. A quick check with known dimensions reveals that it is still 34" scale length. I am still not convinced that it is good value for £300.

What am I missing here? ebay link

@Burns-bass I was not suggesting a need to change any kit (more so given the very high quality kit you have), just outlining my experience. Good that the 'percussivness' request is now better explained and achievable. Onwards and upwards. @Beedster Encouraging to hear your experience and that I am not the only one, I can clearly remember one gig where it was if I had never played bass before and had only just picked it up 5 minutes beforehand.

Agree, I have tried but do not have the ability or stickabilty to 'get a grip on it'.

@Smanth What string action height are you using with the Thunderbrowns?
-
I am thinking about tuning this during a set.... @warwickhunt Where did you get to on the bass quest?
-
Yes and no for me. I am just going to build my own. I have recently bought the same Gold Tone me, a real fun thing

I fully relate to using books, they are my first choice over video / YouTube etc. Given the physical size of your DB, your height, arm reach and end pin height, is plucking nearer the bridge possible as per increasing bass guitar string attack?
-
Are there any videos / recordings that point in the direction of the sound you are looking for? I used to use my DB with Corelli 370s and a Schaller magnetic pickup for blues / folk. Percussive yes, like a p bass on steroids - yes. Slap, no chance, string tension too high. Later changed to silver slaps with realist pickup. Thumpy, slappable (my techniques was below poor) but no percussiveness. (I no longer have the DB but still do some EUB now and then). Try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7cu1PvhhnU, she inspires me to think about DB again.

Whilst investigating a short scale replacement fretless neck for my Warwick Corvette I can give you some advice on that. You should now sit down and have tissues to hand since your eyes will be watering at the expense .
-
My short scale basses are increasingly the weapon of first choice with the lightest being most preferable. Having recently entered the bass Uke world with a 23" solid version I would really like to try a 25" one. The Ibanez Mikro basses also look increasingly tempting, just need a fretless (or a cheap s/h one to defret).

Bought some strings from Jono at an astounding low price. Great communication, well packed and immediate posting (even gave me back the 'extra'I had allowed for p&p etc. An absolute first rate chap, a credit to BC. Many thanks Jono.
