I say 'Harrtt-kuh' (double rr representing shrill r, and double t to represent a hard t).
the charlotte is alright - it's still probably the place most bands on national tours stop off on the toilet cicruit. i don't mind playing there at all and we get a fair reaction, although I'm trying to keep away from local band nights and trying to stick to getting support slots for the touring acts. Sumo is coming up quite quickly as a venue and getting it's fair share of NME bands which is helping the local scene (well "helping" depends on you POV!), plus the SHed is still going. a few new venues pop up now and again, but overall the scene couldn't be better. I have detected a certain audience apathy in the short time i've been there, that i hadn't noticed anywhere else.
toilet circuit is an apt name for the Charlotte. Everytime i've stopped off there it smelled distinctly like a lavatory. We played at a weird wee place called Firebug aswell. Beautiful little room upstairs, was quite good fun and relatively busy.

i know it may seem patronising to some... when i get back up to scotland i'm gonna do a photographic guide to explain what i mean a bit more clearly.

66 quid for a jazz bass? I'm a gear snob, but even I'm considering it!!!
-
I've heard leicester has been struggling recently? Any good venues around other than the Charlotte? (Which I'm told is very unpopular with local band types). I've only played at t't Charlotte, and it was incredibly quiet, compared to the night before in Northampton and the night after in Norwich.

thats how I do it... but you have to use a 'bit' of strength to manage that. The way i showed you above gets the cab up there entirely via the forces of gravity! haha

I used to jump between D'Addario prosteels and nickels, and nothing else. I'm now awaiting arrival of a sample of Knucklehead strings to give 'em a trial and see what I think.

my band consists of a primary school teacher, master joiner, myself and someone who lives in New York. It's not the easiest!
Mine Korg DTR2000 tuner Eden Navigator pre-amp Vent QSC PLX2402 In the rear i've mounted an ART Isolation Transformer outboard of the DI to avoid any phantom power spikes coming from the desk.
That's an attractive little rack ya got there...

because new strings make you happy?

so now that it seems you have made a decision... i'd like to say - congratulations on the promotion!

Just in case you thought you had too much bass gear
Er. one question about your man and his room full of amps - why? Surely it's more fun trading one thing for another rather than buying it all and sticking it in a room to gather dust. Perhaps he's building it all up to give it away though - in which case - I take it all back and can I have first dibs please?
because it's a hobby and he enjoys collecting, probably. It also means he can always a/b gear, give valid opinions on gear, and have GTG's where people can come and try out his gear! I'd collect like that if I could! -
eh-pee-FAW-knee, with stress on the Faw. I believe this is the correct pronunciation according to the company themselves?

I'd also like to report my experiences, because I think the story goes far beyond snobbery of any sort. I genuinely think buying a behringer cab will be a choice you will regret. I played a show recently, supporting a touring band with a behringer bass rig. The room was tiny with no space for gear storage, and so i was told I could not use my 6x10 unless i wanted to carry it in for our set, and then take it back up 3 flights of stairs into the van. I said all the bands could use my cab if they wanted. The touring band declined. So i said 'thanks for the lend of the cab', and they said 'no worries'. This was a little underground DIY show, so the idea of soundcheck was laughable. We went on stage, set up gear and quickly checked levels. It was now that I realised that my tech 21 head running through the behringer 4x10 was going to be a problem. I turned it up a little louder than i'd normally have it through my own cab, and I STILL couldn't hear it. I leant down a bit and it was only now that I realised two of the cones were covered in ductape. I battered through the gig, pretending to enjoy myself, but it was the first night out of the previous 75 shows where i'd had to use anything but my own cab... and it was awful. Give me peavey anyday, cheap and cheerful, built like a tank, and sound like bass cabs! Afterwards I said thanks to the owner again, and he said "yeah... the speakers blew the first gig I played it with. to be honest, it doesnt sound any different to when it was new!". hmmm....

I use a black one that didnt cost very much. I used to have a black one that cost more, but that snapped mid-lunge at a show infront of 800 people. I now have a distrust of expensive straps The strap world is one of the few 'grey' areas for me as far as this bass game is concerned. I can get myself ridiculously excited about basses, amplifiers, even cables... but I have to say, i've never got in a flush over a strap. I put schaller straplocks on 'em though. I might try a blue one sometime. On that note, are there any people out there who are traditionalists to the extreme of straps? i.e. playing a custom, handmade bass, through a hand wired tube amp and therefore will only use a hand sewn strap made by an english seamstress in the early 70s?

awesome picture!!! my MS Paint skills are somewhat lacking compared! + i accidentally gave the guy on the left a tiny bit of a [blackpool rock], or is it [mangy sock]?
-
totally, as i said in m'other post... i find lifting my guitarists mesa 2x12 cab a lot more strain than lugging my 6x10 about.

i may well pop along!

It sounds like you really would like to do the job, and you can definitely still keep on playing bass. If the only reason you want to turn it down is fun, then think carefully, because there is no guarantee that you WONT be able to do both. I quit my last 'office' job to go on tour, and it was the best choice i've ever made... but i'm not sure about quitting a job which I enjoy (I know your not quitting, just turning down a different role). You can always fit a band round a career, if not this one, then another one, but you can't fit a career round a band quite so easily.
yeah but is that ok on the nanoweb coating though?
Ahh sorry, misread that part of your post!

If you ask any decent drum store/music store with drum stuff, they will be able to get you a price (if they can be bothered). I dont know about stockists though.

Where there is a will, there's a way... Tell that to Buzz next time you see him at the tailors, having his jib cut! And on toeing lines, that problem is best left unsolved Hmmmm....
I'd also make all the bands who want to practice there sign a contract saying that if they break any equipment, they'll pay for it. You are, after all, providing them with a service, and so being business-like in your actions will not hurt.
I wouldn't say this is a practical solution. Equipment can be worn out by misuse internally. If I, as a customer, went in and played sensibly through the studio's bass amp, and have it fail in the period I am there (even though its the result of someone else's misuse) there is absolutely NO way i am going to pay for it! I'll pay to replace my own equipment, and if I was to borrow something and accidentally drop it in the sea, I would pay for it. I would definitly not shell out for the full cost of a rehearsal rooms broken amp. Thats what insurance is for!

Another problem one - "You want something Loud, S[Thora Hird]y and Reliable above all things."
