Ashdown Little Giant 1000 watts £259 New
BigAlonBass replied to OldGit's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Are these any better than the (dire...in my opinion) Superfly? Has anyone tried them and do they actually have any real guts? The Superfly, even through a very efficient amp was just weak...
I'm currently helping out mixing for a Band in which the Bass Player uses the 350 watt version, and it's LOUD. I was truly surprised at it's power, and he says he's saving up for the 1000 watt version, because he sometimes plays in another Band with no P.A. support, and after he tried one out at a gig, apparently it practically blew his legs off! Not exactly first-hand experience of said amp. but some indication that might prove helpful? -

NORTH EAST BASS BASH - NOVEMBER 2009 - PICS & VIDEO ADDED!
BigAlonBass replied to wateroftyne's topic in Events
Where were ya, man?
Making money, unfortunately, Michael. I was accosted, dragged to a Venue in Sunderland, and forced to do the Sound for a bunch of reprobates who have the temerity to call themselves Musicians. They also forced foul-tasting Beer down my throat, so I wouldn't be able to drive afterwards. -
Chuffin hell mate; not only did you bust your amp but you snapped the headstock off that fender... come to think of it, there's something wrong with the body as well!
I thought it was a ladder nailed to a goldfish. (The old ones are still the best.) -
Behringer BDI21 - Any good as a basic DI? Anyone tried one?
BigAlonBass replied to Moos3h's topic in Effects
I find mine surprisingly good value for the money, and it gets very close to 'my sound' when just put through the P.A. Worth a punt. -
No alternative power supply? No Band-end of argument. I've had an enthusiastically-played snare 'trip' one of these, BEFORE it was mic'd up. With the price of Equipment these days, there is no way I am going to take the chance of losing any to power cuts or surges caused by one of these things. If you have to install one, there's a good chance you shouldn't be having Live Music in your Venue in the first place. (IMHO)
The consistency is my problem, I've just learnt Original Prankster by The Offspring as a little warm up but I find I can only use 2 fingers.
Don't let that worry you in the slightest, Wayne. Have a look at some Bass Players in different Bands the next time you go out, and you'll probably be surprised at the amount that get away with using two fingers for the whole set. The thing at the moment for you to do (IMHO) is to become proficient with your two fingers, find out what differences in tonality you can get using them, and eventually bring another one into the mix, and so on. My situation was reversed, as I'd used fingers from starting to learn Bass, and I learned to use a plec for the odd song that needed it. To this day, I still get Band Members who are surprised when they find out I can do both. You immediately become 'versatile' in their eyes, and word soon gets around. Keep at it mate, try to have fun finding out exactly what you can do, and remember-Practise Makes Perfect.
You're going to subject your wife and daughter to 5 Hours in the Metro Centre?! You Cruel Cruel Man
He's going to subject HIMSELF to the Western By-Pass on a weekend??? Silly boy! -
I only bought a pedal from Chris, but he bent over backwards to be helpful. He even managed to get it delivered quickly in the middle of a Postal Strike! Cheers, mate.
Hey mate, agreed, I have three unlined necks which I love but need a lined neck to cut down the potential cock ups in an upcoming recording project - we're recording live so I don't want to be the guy who messes up an otherwise great performance. I some respects I'm wimping out but I think it's the safest bet
If your neck has a 'shiny' finish where the dots are, might I recommend you try lines drawn on in Tipp-ex. (or some similar product) After the recording, it rubs off easily, leaving no trace. (Done it myself, with a Bass I used regularly for some Club work, where it was nearly impossible to see the dots or even the frets, due to lousy lighting.) Disclaimer - I said on the side of the neck where it's shiny--NOT the fretboard!

Try this. Low-Tech as anything, but I use it for an hour every night when the Household has retired, and nobody ever hears me. A single lead from the MP3/CD/Laptop and you can play along with anything you want. What's funny about them? I sound just like that when I play.

My Wife said exactly the same. I am now in my second Marriage, and this one accepts that I am a Musician.
No-one's commented on the obviously askew nature of the actual serial number........................ G.
.................and that's why I'll never buy an old/vintage/collectors Bass off e-bay or wherever. I'm ripe for being scammed, because I can't see anything wrong with it. -
On a different note, another reason for going wireless is the extra safety of not being physically connected to my gear thus reducing (or even eliminating) the chance of electric shock etc. I've had one or two discussions with other muso types as to the validity of this argument and wondered if someone here could shed some definitive light on this. I've never had to (and would rather not) test the theory first hand!
Yep-it eliminates the connection between you, the mic, and your backline. After dying onstage a few years back (and luckily being brought back by a Doc in the audience) I went wireless, and haven't used a lead since.

The one person in my life who ALWAYS encouraged me, and told me never to give up, was my Dad. The two best moments of my (musical) life were being able to take him backstage at both the City Hall and Tyne Tees Studios. (When I was playing both). His smile is something that stays with me to this day, and he's been gone for six years.

Shame about the lousy ?Music? and ?Lyrics? drowning it out.
