Robert Wyatt's 'Shipbuilding' (with Madness' Bedders on DB) - lovely
fatback replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Bought the 12" and was instantly besotted by the db sound. Took me a lifetime to get round to getting one. Idiot = me. Great post Clarky. I've never seen a performance of this version. -
You probably don't need it. I splashed out on a Midget T and a Compact, but have yet to come across a suitable use for them both together and when I think the Compact is required find the Midget will still do it. Needs a powerful amp but I've yet to find it's limit.
Fraid you're right. Really annoying. Maybe it's making lots of noise that I'm gassing for. Time for another (louder) band?

I have absolutely no need for another cab, asI have a fabby little Midget already (with foot reglued ) but I'm still gassing like mad for a 2X12 or a Compact. Help!
I'm afraid so Geoff. Keep your spiros in the string drawer you might need them. £220 for a set of Dominants on the String Zone website. $250-270 in the US . What we bassists need is for the Euro to go in to meltdown so we can stock up on a lifetimes supply.
Oh thanks a lot!
I notice the guy in the video is stood while bowing, is it not more typical to be seated while playing in this style or does it not matter?
Just found this. http://doublebassblog.org/2008/05/standing-versus-sitting-for-the-double-bassist.html Generally a very good blog too.

Ooh, exciting. Sounds a lovely bass.

OK now the new bass is here..... how do I amplify it?!
fatback replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in EUB and Double Bass
The business of matching pickup to bass seems a long, expensive and frustrating road. It's like there's no telling in advance what will work for your particular bass. So as has been said, might as well start cheap and work from there. -
Aha! I'll try the fingerprint test.
-
Bad luck. Was it insured? Not that insurance is much compensation when you're attached to a particular bass. I had a dream night before last that my upright was nicked out of the car, and I was completely gutted.
Got my kent armstrong today. Velcro fitted it to the bass which works a treat however... I'm getting a lot of hum when plugged in to the amp. Have tried 2 cables with no difference. When I touch the outside of the phono jack the hum gets quieter. Do I need to earth the pickup?
There absolutely shouldn't be a hum. I'd say mail Alex; he'll sort you.
Well fate has decided, I was about to order on or the other then found a pot of Pops in the gig bag with my new Gedo bass!
Brilliant, you can tell me how sticky it is or isn't. Graphic imagery is ok. These are desperate times.

Great you've got your baby back. Have fun.
Ordering now!!!! Rabbath is a beast. Thanks for the suggestion.
You won't regret it. Wish i'd found him when i first tried (and failed) to bow. He's so encouraging. What i love about the guy is that he questions everything and has a rational answer for why it's best to do stuff in particular ways. A lot of music teaching is 'that's the way you do it because that's the way it's always been done' etc, and I'm no good with that.

I wouldn't try to control feedback with EQ apart from using it as a notch filter. You want EQ to give you the right sound and then deal with feedback other ways. For sound quality, I found that, apart from cutting the extreme lows, the best EQ depended on the pickup/bass combination. When i had a Bassmax I couldn't cut enough mids to get a decent sound. With a Full Circle, much less mid cut required, and through a PA it sounds perfect flat. Gigging without a PA obviously needs more mids to be able to cut through. about the weak E, I wonder if moving the Realist to the other side might be worth trying? Could be the strings, though, i suppose. Some folks use a different E to get more oomph. Not something I know anything about, being too lazy to try.

Try to get hold of Francois Rabbath's Art of the Bow dvd. He talks about every aspect. Very practical and inspirational as well. Top players say he bows like an angel. btw The DVD is not the Rabbath 'art of the bow' you see on youtube searches. That's a live class. The DVD is just to camera.
Isn't that what rosin is supposed to do? My pops isn't sticky either (in normal weather) but the dust it leaves on my bow makes the hair sticky. It's not like you want an actual layer of toffee on your bow.
Take your point, but in fact the hair never gets sticky at all. I'm sure this is just me. It's what can happen when you don't have a teacher, I guess. As I said, youtube doesn't communicate concepts like 'sticky' very well.
Spoke to Aaron, I've ordered myself a Kent Armstrong hopefully it will arrive so this week so I can gig it next weekend.
Great. You'll like it.

What to play when a guitarist is playing 'bass'?
fatback replied to deejayen's topic in Theory and Technique
Seems to me there are two types of band anyhow, those that think about the sound and those where everybody just plays. In the former, people would make an effort to keep out of each others way, not just in general, like the keys going easy on the left hand, but in different parts of the song. So for example, the bass wouldn't do widdly bits up the board during a guitar solo. Or for that matter do stuff that's too interesting over the verses of a song where the words really matter (or at least not over the first verse). So everybody consciously tries to make space for each other as the song moves along by watching both the register they're playing in, the complexity of what they're playing and the placing of the particular line in the song. I can't say I always succeed in doing this correctly, but I try. I've been in a couple of bands where this was really well done, and live performance was like listening to a recording. Magic. No ego problems there, or it never would have happened. -
Don't by the nyman rosin online either, im not happy with mine
And I thought my probs would be solved by fresh pops. I keep reading that it's sticky and wondering what people are talking about. This is the second pot (from a different supplier) that's hard, barely sticky and seems to just dust the strings. This is driving me nuts, as I'm fairly sure my technique isn't all that bad.

The foam a hard drive gets posted in works well. Most of them have on oblong shape cut out of the middle that sits neatly enough on the cab handle.
-
The biggest help for me was learning some theory. Gives great confidence and really helps generate ideas for lines. I think knowing what you want to play is more important than the mechanics of how to do it.
Haha tricky ain't it! If a used one came up at the right time that I knew was a good one I'd take it but how would I know? I'm hooping with an ebony board, adjustable bridge and spirocore strings a decent Luthier should be able to make it playable even if the sound is little lacking.
I took a chance the seller was an honest guy, and so it turned out. Still had to spend on setup etc, but the basic quality of the instrument was excellent for the price. I would trust a long-term seller on BC to be straight about the bass.

Cool looking bass, for sure.

You need to email alex: He gets you to trace the shape of the end profile of your fingerboard and they work to that. Ask for a humbucker (they may all be, but i'm not sure), and make sure you ask for it to be pre-wired, as some people want to wire it themselves. Cost was £90 a couple of years ago; don;t know the price now. Excellent pickup.
Didn't you basically dampen everything on your bass?
No, not me. A bit of notch filtering solved it for me. Don't get me wrong; i'm not being ideological about this ply business (or anything else). But I remember when I was buying my first upright how confusing it seemed to be, when in fact only a few things really mattered. As for the 'playable' bit, I guess a good few basses used and new out there need a bit of work. As a beginner, you can suffer for quite a while not realising where the problems are. Far better to get one that's playable from the off if you can. Horses for courses and all that. I'm now gassing for a second upright, carved and optimised for a bowed acoustic sound. But Nigella will be the girl I take on the town.
