1.
As much as I like piobaireachd, it is a bit of an oddity. A bit too regimented to be classed as folk, although it has traditional roots and seems to have originated in the Hebrides, which would make it Irish, but it's not. I can only surmise that it's come from a different planet with a sense of humour too sophisticated for us to understand.
It's classical rather than folk, I think. Somewhere i got the idea that it's related to medieval welsh harping, a kind of sequencing with variations approach, but i've no idea where. Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck, i have to say.
2. You won;t have a problem, once you get the knack. Thankfully I don't need to bother. Ford Cougar all the way, me. Beastliest van there is.
3. On the room Q, do you have a spare corner? Bass on a stand in the corner takes up surprisingly little space. Less likely to be knocked over on a stand as well. As far as preamps go, don;t feel you have to go all out for the expensive Fishman's. Something like a £60 DHA DI/EQ does the impedance matching job fine and has a nice parametric eq as well.
4. Looks like you're having loads of fun. Great stuff.
5. That sounds right. Maybe the ubiquitous piano accordion did the job too. We didn't much do drum kits either. I'd like to know why piobaireachd never got here. It's an amazing form.
6.
Like English folk music, there are some distinct 'family trees'. The thing with 'Irish music' is not to be too picky about the actual locations - there are some fab Scottish folk bands and, as there's just a wee bit of water seperating Ireland from Scotland, there are a lot of points where the two musical cultures criss cross and become pretty much indistinguishable (unless you know the history of the song) from each other. And before anyone takes offence to that observation - it is meant as a compliment to both countries.
+1 It's essentially the same, gaelic, culture. Some things are unique to the scottish though, like group singing (those wonderful waulking songs from the islands). Also, piobaireachd piping. Maybe an acquired taste, but awesome when you get into it. Interestingly, bass seemed to find a place in scottish folk that it hasn't in Irish. No idea why. As well as the shared tradition, there have been shared occupations as well. lots of soldiers and sailors songs are common.
7. Many folks suggest that if you get the hard case you sell it on ebay, as you won't use it. That should free up a few squids for a set up. How about getting a lesson before you start? That's what i did; I'd never touched one before either, but had a single lesson and then bought. Gives a bit of confidence and, above all, makes sure you get a technique that will save you from injury. You could maybe even find a teacher on this site. Lots of info about pickups on here. £70 will do it. You might or might not need a preamp, depending on your amp. As for Gear4music, i've no knowledge, but there have been amazing sub-£500 bargains sold by members here over the months. Well done on taking the plunge. You absolutely will not regret this.
8. I'm getting comfortable (if that's the word ) practicing thumb position, but I'm not sure I'm getting the crab on the way down correctly - all a bit hit and miss. I've found very few vids on crab technique. Any suggestions? In fact anything about thumb position on the way down could be very helpful. Thanks for any info. Frustration levels rising dangerously.
9. Two separate 12s would be mighty flexible (if a little pricey). Super 12 would be staggeringly loud by all accounts. Ask alex about Super twelve vs big Twin. He recommended Midget for me over Compact, and he was right.
10. Have you asked Alex at BF what he thinks? There's the Super 12 as well to think about. I use an EA Doubler into a BF Midget and it works very well. Sounds natural, and it's very loud as long as I don't lift it more than a couple of feet off the floor. Thought of two midgets for the ultimate in felixibility? One with tweeter, one without? Oooh, I'm talking myself into a lather now.
11. Oh very pretty top. If she sounds as good as she looks, you'll be very happy. There doesn't seemt o be an emoticon for jealous.
12.
p.s. Sorry Bilbo! I thought I might do a looped, heavily-effected version of Moondance to cheer you up though? Provided I can find the tabs for it online, that is.
13. Fingers crossed. Let's hope the courier has a better sense of direction than the guy that just took an hour to find me. Keep us updated on the bass.
14.
Never works for me, makes the mid range too prominent...I like the earth to move, just a little bit .
+1 I've gigged the Midget a lot on electric and upright and the only time I hadn't enough volume was when I'd raised it up on a keyboard stand and lost the low mids. To do with boundary reinforcement I'm told. Raising it only a foot or so has less of an effect. But other than that, on the floor and driving it with my EA Doubler (310 into 8ohms) it's mighty loud and even big noisy pubs don't give me a problem. You do need to boost the bass a tad, as it is a little barky at high vols, as bassbod has said. It cuts through very well and has no boominess whatsoever. Wonderful cab. the only thing better would be two imo
15. Of course you've now stoked my GAS well and truly.
16.
I suppose it depends what you're using to reproduce it. There are certainly some very expensive mics available.
I mean if yiou're using piezzo and not micing up. For example, i can't see myself recording in the foreseeable, and I'll never be playing acoustically, so piezzo is all that matters. Would even my nice full Circle show up much of a difference between £600 and 6k? I suppose when practicing a pleasing and clear acoustic sound is helpful.
17. This has set me wondering about amplification too. If a particular 3k bass sounds much better acoustically than a £600 bass, will the difference amplified by piezzo be anything like as obvious? I know every bass is different, but I'm wondering whether high quality soundwise isn't somewhat lost if you're not playing acoustically or miced up.
18.
Am currently about half way through this, and loving it. A concert of Esperanza Spalding and Madeleine Peyrou, 54mins total. Edit: That's probably the worst preview frame possible
I can hardly bear to watch her she's so gorgeous and brilliant. I mean, mostly I'm quite content with life. But girls this beautiful and talented shouldn't be allowed. No, not at all. I'll watch it, of course. And thanks for posting (not).
19. A couple of white stick-on dots on the edge of the fingerboard, so if you jump about too much or if you can't hear yourself you can hit your fingering position. Total life-saver.
20. Interesting thing is, in all these examples it still sounds like an upright bass. Or at least, you'd have a hard time making those sounds with any other intrument. A justification in there somewhere, Bilbo?
21. Primus! Don't you love them! Now as for EST, they're a revelation to me. Outstanding. The case for FX made, i think.
22. Ape is lossless but not many apps will play it. Very useful for sending master files around but not a day to day format like flac imo.
23.
Just ordered one from Andertons . I hope I've done the right thing , I want to dip my toe in the upright scene and make myself a bit more giggable .
You won't regret it. You'll not only become more giggable, you'll be a person! People will notice that you exist in the band and want to talk to you. For a bass player, it's pretty shocking at first, but you'll get to like it.
24.
As for the Godwin's Law thing, never did I think it'd happen on the DB/EUB part of the forum
25.
As it happens I have just started to plug my DB into Mainstage on my laptop to mess with delays and stuff for one of the numbers I am doing. The possibilities are just endless, and that is just using presets. Once I can work out how to get a filter to open and close (and it cannot be that hard) using bow pressure I will be able to achieve total world domination.
Gwan, talk dirty ta me
