Thanks for all the the advice - order out of confusion . Looks like it's down to Pirazzis or Silver slaps. @ slobluesine - Never thought of bumping. The argument against is that the Jazzers don't bow too well as it is, so i should probably change anyhow.

Can anyone recommend strings that would be ok to learn arco but also with tension low enough for rockin' out without leaving the tips of my fingers on the floor. Serious slapping not on the cards though. Probably asking a lot, i know. But my current strings (Pirastro Jazzes) are pretty stiff, and by all accounts not great for bowing either. As always, thanks for your thoughts.

Wish there had been a place like this when I was a nipper.
Judging by my wife's views on cars, I've usually managed to avoid the scenario above by pointing out that red basses sound different to blue ones ...
I'll have that A DI pedal seems to have been left out of the essentials kit. Easier to carry around than a spare amp.

Thanks for the heads up. Sounds interesting.
So that's mouse mats, nail files and scrap computer packaging so far... You do realise that 'Time Team' in a 1000 years time are going to come up with proof that people from this era used to store household waste in a hollowed out wooden container with a long handle dont you..? Thanks for all the advice. It would be a lonely old business without the support of the bc upright fraternity. Double bass fraternity that is, although righteous too, no doubt Interestingly, I'm finding blind playing much easier with the upright than with fretless bass guitar. Presumably that's because on guitar the angle is changing all the time as you lengthen your arm and move the neck, whereas on the DB the board is pretty static.

Had to do this lately and found the layered-foam nail buffing stick thingies that women use are the perfect thickness and width. Cut one in half, and job done. Being layered, they don't seem to lose their elasticity.

Is it lined? If it is, does it buzz when you play in between the 'frets' or just on top? If only on top of the marker, the fret marker inlays may be raised a fraction. I've had that on a VMJ, and it was very annoying. Sanded it down easy enough though.

Thanks for the insights. It's good to know that not looking (much) is worth sticking with. There's no question that for me looking too much would adversely affect the hand shape. But i didn't want to be a masochist either

Am i making life silly hard for myself? I've just noticed that in order to get good finger posture I'm holding the neck quite close to my face, and since I'm reading the exercises too that means i hardly ever get to look at the board. Do you look much? Should a learner minimise the lookie bit or not worry about it?

I've gigged my Midget a fair bit now, and I've no doubts about build quality at all. It feels solid, the fittings are good and the finish looks bulletproof. As for sound, I've not used it with a fiver, so i can't say about the B, but other than that I'm very happy. I drive it with an EA Doubler and tend to roll off a little mid and up the bass a tad, but otherwise it suits my oldish school needs perfectly. It's amazingly loud and never, ever muddy. Sure, in the best of all worlds I'd match it with a Compact for a bigger sound, but for largish pub gigs playing country rock it's perfect on its own - more would seem like overkill.
sorry, don't give this away. Took me months to perfect the design and I don't intend to let the competition know what I do.
Sorry. Never thought of that. The EQ let me knock out a troublesome frequency on my upright at the top end of the mid range, and I was curious about what it was.

Simple doesn't have to be about just playing roots and fifths. A well-formed melodic part can sound simple where a bad part with the same number of notes sounds busy. Also, a part supporting a vocal line won't necessarily sound busy either. And there are always plenty of gaps you can work with other than the usual spots for fills. Other than that KISS, for sure
Bit of a thread hijack - what's the serial on yours? I have a MIJ BB400S fretless with a weird number, wondered if there's a pattern. Jon.
111779
I assume your talking about a solid-state stereo amp in which case it's fine to run without a load. Valve amps on the other hand must have a load matched to the output transformer setting.
Useful info. I was told by somebody not to use my amp as a DI with no load. nice to know I can.

My bb400 serial is on the headstock, but it's small and just stamped in, so it's very hard to see unless you angle the light. Yamaha (U.S.) tracked the serial down for me with a phone call. Service or what.

A little bump for this.

Thanks for the suggestions guys; I'll pass them along.
Basschats very own OBBM www.bassic-bits.co.uk Fantastic cables, at prices that are the same as what you would pay in a music shop for the ordinary ranges. Coudn`t believe it when I A/Bd my OBBM cable against my trusty old Planet Waves cable - much more even full-bodied sound. Very hard-wearing cables as well, a real quality product. All my cables (inc speaker) are now OBBMs.
+1 Quality and a great service.

Our singer/guitarist admits he's technically challenged but knows he needs a DI box for his acoustic. An EQ would be useful too. Any suggestions for a reasonable quality box? Are these gizmos the same for bass and guitar? Thanks for ya thoughts
