1.
A bass bash would be a great idea. I think it would be difficult to organise this year, but perhaps early in 2011? I'll start a thread about it after Christmas. Frank.
Excellent!
2.
Hello my Irish commrades, I see some people in Ireland with a Epifani and Eden gear etc. etc. anyhu I would love to know if there is a good music shop in Ireland that has good equipment? Philip
If you need to try before buy there's nowhere. Mind you, from posts here, it looks like London is mostly not much use either. Otherwise, buying by post from UK or Europe works well enough. I've not had problems, anyway. What we need is a bass bash... anyone?
3. Very interested in your opinion.
4. Can't say about the actives, but my Sadowsky box lends a lovely rich quality to my passive Yamaha. Can't imagine being without it.
5.
Change your technique. Don't stretch, move your hand to get your fingers to the right place.
+1 The double bass Simandl technique is the one.
6. I'm learning to read atm, concentrating on rhythms with open strings. I'm using a metronome, and no doubt about it, it's making sure I count things right. Time and time again, i've only picked up a mistake by noticing that the first beat of the bar has slipped. Obviously, you need to have the metronome set so you hear that first beat.
7. btw the k&k bassmax that sits in the bridge wing is fairly cheap at $96 US. Got mine from Golihur, and delivery only took a few days. Golihur bassmax
8. In rather the same boat myself. Keen to get a simple solution, even if the sound is not absolutely the best. Lots of folks seem to be saying that mics are not worth the feedback pain. As for pickups, my thinking was influenced by not wanting to loosen the bridge to stick piezzo transducers under the foot, so i chose the k&k bassmax cos you can slip it into the side of the bridge (still took a bit of sanding though). I wasn't wild about the sound at first cos it had a poppy attack, but i've since concluded it's the strings that have that quality. I've recently tried a magnetic pickup too, and the sound was as good as the piezzo and promised no feedback, but clearly there were grounding probs, and it buzzed too much for me. As far as DI goes, I've seen a few people do small gigs with a little preamp straight into the desk, no DI box as such at all. Very simple. As a noob, i'm still amazed at how every little thing about this instrument is a subject in itself
9. Nostalgia bump I used one of these heads for years paired with a Peavey BW15 and played big stages without ever running out of steam. The nominal 130 watts is a joke. These things are loud! I've missed the true parametric ever since.
10.
This thread convinced me to go out and get a set of ER-25s. I had my ears cast on Friday so should be ready for the Christmas glut. It's about time and I'm sure I'll be glad once I get into it but it has always been a massive problem - the plugs sap the life out of the songs and since it's all DnB it needs a lot of energy. Dan
Worrying to hear that, given I'm gonna be spending a fortune. Were yours proper musicians' plugs etc?
11.
We play at about circa 90db, as measured in an amateurish way, so I guess were an averagely loud pub band. We're a three piece and drums and bass are defo the loudist. Reading on here most seem to have the 15's so I'm erring on this side tbh.
Just been to a pretty experienced audiologist to get fitted with plugs, and he really wanted me to go 25s. He did say that he'd get the filters changed if it was a prob, but said his experience with players was that 25s didn't cause problems cos it's a filter not a plug. I see the logic, but i'm swithering. i hate to ignore professional advice I'm paying for
12. Late to the thread, but just wishing you the best. If the band are a decent bunch, they'll understand and you'll get kudos for going ahead with the electric.
13. +1 on getting an external audio interface. Obviously you can record at better quality, but most importantly you'll find it much better when you try and record while monitoring at the same time without delay. Or using vst instruments. There have been some good prices on here for sound cards. Maybe worth a 'wanted'.
14.
Rattlin Bone is playing its inaugural gig on 30 October at The Miller, SE1 London. Its a 'Halloween horrorfest' with zombie bands etc and should be a hoot! Here's the flyer
Sounds like a great night. Bit far for me but best of luck with the gig. You'll have a blast.
15.
I'm sure I used to have skin on my plucking fingers ( yes, plucking ) And I used to be able to feel the fretting ones. Any tips on protecting the plucking ones - plasters ?
we should probably have a 'blisters' thread I'm finding Tiger Balm amazing for encouraging very fast healing of sore fingers. Smells nice anyway
16. Hilarious. 'they've started to harmonise'

Hey there

Welcome, and don't believe the negative crap. You go for it. Maybe get a good teacher to speed things up for you and give you confidence. I wish I'd done that early on. Believe me, 24 looks plenty young from where many of us are standing
18. Can't help with the buuzz, but congrats on a nice looking bass Have loadsa fun.
19. By Monday your BG is gonna feel like a ukelele
20.
Sometimes I wish I could get in a band that didn't have to reinvent the setlist at every bl**dy gig! <rant> Just because we've heard and played the songs a hundred times, putting them in a different order will not. 1. Make it more interesting. b. Make more people dance. It just makes it harder to keep my pad in order! </rant>
Are we in the same band?

Newbie

Welcome Yammys tend to have a neck that's flatter than a precision, but not as narrow as a jazz, so some find that easier. I find them just as comfortable as a jazz, and I have small hands. As everyone says, keep trying till you find one you like. you will, eventually.
22. Thanks for the insights. Might be worth a go in case feedback probs get to be just too much. @ keeponehandloose PM sent
23. Has anyone tried one of these Krivo magnetic jobs? Krivo They look nicely discrete compared to the Schaller, and they have a no-screws mounting. Thoughts?
24. You looked reality in the eye and took the decision. More power to you, Andy. In the end, they're only 'things'. Ok, nice 'things', but things all the same. You'll save yourself a lot of stress, and there's plenty time to start collecting all over again BBs are cool.
25.
Thanks thisnameistaken. I got the DB gig with Rattlin Bone today and the constructive criticism I got when auditioning was that I was playing a bit quietly. So its something I definitely need to work on. Appreciate your answers.
Hey, congrats on getting that gig. I'm jealous. Great band
