Going solo then?
Bombing?

+1 on the barefaced. I think the EA iAmp 800 can go to 2 ohms. I know the micro and doubler can.
-
Oops nearly forgot to do this cos it's the second time I got cables from Dave. This time a small custom job, hardly worth his while, but the same great service etc as for bigger orders. Pleasure dealing with you sir

Just get obbm to make you one. Top quality. Good price.
Good score; the Doubler is a great head. Surely it's worth spending a bit to get something decent to keep a £500 amp in? Gareth
If you (or significant other) had any idea how much I've spent on kit in the last month... That Maplin stuff looks good. I'll check the size. I'm willing to spend £30 posted but not £60 posted. Everything here is £10-25 dearer cos of delivery. A camera case is a good idea too. Maybe I'm just reducing guilt, as in: if i can save £30 on a case that means it was just fine to spend xzillion£ on the gear
While I was at Beedster's house earlier I tried his DB and it gave me the bug. I was looking on eBay and found this , would it be any good?
The BIN price for a solid top seems way cheap. Wonder what make it is? Maybe you should ask the guy where he got it.

Seems the big requirement is the right thickness chunk of foam to cut. Where on earth do you buy foam? (apart from an American pub - sorry A foam shop? Foam-is-us? Anne Summers Fantasy Foam store? But really. I'll need foam for this.
It's not just a jazz thing. There are players and bands in every genre that have delusions of adequacy. The big difference though,is that in rock music you can become very successful by being very mediocre.
A big difference is that outside jazz it's not all about the music. Approve of it or not, other things matter and can matter more than an individual player's ability. Thankfully

Thought you were selling it, there for a minute. Got all excited

Thanks for the ideas. I resent being asked for £50 for a bag.
There is the Simandl Plus method which essentially suggests you can switch between 'open' and 'closed' hand positions (i.e. 1234 and 124 fingerings) depending on the line to be played and where you can play it on the instrument.
Useful in that it codifies a lot of the common sense tactics that most of us probably use anyway on bg, plus some I for one hadn't thought of. But dear oh dear, registering Simandl-plus as a trademark?

Just got meself a Doubler - Woot! Can't try it yet cos I'm waiting for a cab, but meantime, does anybody have any ideas for a cheap DIY gigbag or case for these lil beauties? It's so light (under 3 lbs, yes!), I'm afraid I'll throw it in my gigbag and damage it. There'd be tears
I do realise that this could be a contentious statement, but you could use 1 finger per semitone. It is probably easier to do this if you are kicked off by a teacher who espouses that technique. The thumb placement is key. There can be an element of pivot on the thumb.
On fretless bg I use the 4 fingers and thumb pivot thing, but I can only see that working on db below A on the E maybe. Small hands, me. I'm quite happy to do the simandl, but it was being told to use the nanny??? one that confused me.

I agree wholeheartedly; it is a good thread. But if it's not just about jazz, then something else may be worth mentioning - showbiz Not all music is 'art music'. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of very ambitious music, but I also like, in a live context, a band that plays to give themselves and the crowd a good time. And that's not all about the music. The spirit matters, the presentation matters, the rapport counts for a lot too. Sometimes chaos is exciting (at the right time). Not all gigs are in concert halls. A band with musical flaws but performance strengths can be well worth the effort. But when it stops being fun, for whatever reason, then stop, unless you need the money, and that's a whole other ballgame. Most of us do things we don't much like for money, but why do them for any other reason? But if it's solely about the music, as in the aural part of the experience, then set the bar as high as you like. It's your prerogative if you're nobody's employee. Just my 2 cents
-
I imagine this thread all by itself has cleared a fair bit of undergrowth. I sure won't be risking jazz any time soon
Don't give it a second thought, w !! I am a Probation Officer!
Cripes. Are you sure your bandmates aren't messing up because the prospect of breaching their parole conditions and being sent back down makes them so nervous they can't play? Cripes m'lud, was that really a flat five? Nyhow, it were him what dunnit.
The low vote for Protools is worrying given I've just opted for it?
That may be because most people are PC and don't have the Mac options of protools and logic. If you've decided on Mac, then the choice between protools and logic might come down to whether or not you do sequencing and how much of it you do, and which processing plugins you like. As a Cubase / Nuendo person I can't advise you there, but you might think of reading up about effects plugins for Logic and Protools and working backwards to choosing the platform
What are people's opinions on Norman Watt-Roy. Both his playing, and his riffs and grooves? http://www.we7.com/#/song/Ian-Dury/Wake-Up...-Love-With-Me+1
I want to be reincarnated as him. Not fair that he's a good looking devil as well as a wonderfully groovy player. But where is there justice in this world?

Thanks Max! Great leads, excellent packaging and speedy delivery. Couldn't ask for more, really. Top bloke to deal with
i use nuendo...but only because i used cubase for years and it's a similar animal. i'd like to get into ableton, but it means a lot of learning and no playing.
Nuendo is really nice. basically, it's Cubase optimised for sound to picture, great for soundtracks. Ableton seems to score highly for using in live performance for sequencing, but I found it a pretty alien way of thinking.
-
Time to start your own band?
-
The big choice is between going Mac and going PC. As Ian said, Mac/Logic is great for live recording. Logic doesn't run on PC anymore. Cubase maybe scores on sequencing, although i like Cubases mixing layout as well. A big plus of Cubase is the huge number of cheap / free VST effects/instruments apps out there. don;t know anything about Reaper except that it has a lot of fans.
