1.
The bass playing in the Malone clip seems a bit muted, to me anyway. You should be able to get more attack out of a fretless, which may be what you need for deathcore. Just so those damn guitars don't hog all of the sound you chuck at your audience
My one and only bass (alas) is a fretless and has to cover a lot of requirements. I found two things help a lot: vary where you pluck between the bridge and the neck. Closer to the bridge helps you get a more attacking sound. Second, rough up the sound a bit with some distortion. I agree with above that you probably shouldn't get rid of your fretted and then depend totally on the fretless. You need to build confidence. fatback fatback
 2.
an unmarked one and jumping about in true deathcore styleee shouldn't be a problem.
Where do I get lessons? Seriously, i think learning to play a fretless is a great thing to do for a whole lot of reasons, especially to train your ear. And as jerry_b said, there's a world of amazing sounds to be had in a fretless. As they say: no frets, no limits.
 3. A bumpeen for a nice bit of kit. Got one on here a while back, and it does the biz beautifully. fatback
 4. Alas, I've found that leaping about and fretless do not mix. if you want to move ya body, Mick Karn's sliding on rails technique is probably the one, but i haven't mastered it. Lovely instrument to play though. fatback
 5.
To the part in bold italics: I'd suggest that in this day of internet shopping, there are many people that buy all sorts of products unseen/unheard, but rely on manufacturer websites, review websites and forums to glean info & advice. It's rare (but it's a fact) that local music shops will be as cheap as the big online megastores. Mark
+1 to that. Where I live there isn't a decent music store within two hours, so other folk's views are always welcome. Maybe more useful than the conclusions in these posts is the reasoning behind them. Always an education on BC. fatback
 6. Big welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll get a lot from it, as I have. I've got a 27 year old Yamaha - a very well made instrument. Fatback
 7.
I think so, that's how i'm having it. Hopefully i'll have vol/vol/tone for the mag pups, usual jazz configuration. Then a stacked vol/tone for the piezo. My tech is also gonna put a series/parallel switch in for the mag pickups so hopefully i should be able to get quite a few really different sound out of it
Sounds really promising. Let us know what it turns out like. I think this is the first time I've ever been tempted to do a mod.
 8. The thing that made the biggest difference for me was learning the scales that went with each type of chord and then working hard at them as exercises. The best exercises for helping with creating lines, I found, were those that used intervals (like running up/down a scale in seconds, thirds fourths et) and sequences (playing 1,2,3; 2,3,4; 3,4,5 etc). You can get amazingly cool riffs by putting one of each type of motion together in one phrase. Great for the ear too. And fun. fatback
 9.
I'm no expert and would appreciate verification, but i thought the buffer preamp would come before the volume/blend pot, so the impedance matches the mag pickups before it goes to the output jack? Like i said, i'm just assuming that and not basing it on any technical knowledge whatsoever! You could always look at a stacked pot if you don't want to drill any more holes in the bass/pickguard. That's what i'm doing, also takes up less space in the cavity
Presumably that means the buffer has to be inboard, then routed to the master volume? A stacked pot sounds good.
 10.
Here's one i was looking at, can be mounted in a small box: http://www.scotthelmke.com/Mint-box-buffer.html
Neat little box. I've already got an outboard Sadowsky that could control the final tone of the bass, Would that do? I guess I'd still need some kind of blend pot? Th bass only has tone and vol. Interesting thread.
 11. Will an outboard preamp do the biz for a piezo? I wouldn't want to rout out my passive bass, but the mod sounds mighty attractive. Also, do you have to have an extra tone control for the piezo? fatback
 12. Those Yamahas are good basses, but would benefit from a quality outboard preamp. Not to interfere with any man's righteous GAS tho.
 13.
This might make your GAS worse... I particularly like the Standard/PJ version of the Jazz. Mind you, I like MIJ Fender Jazzes in general.
Oooooh
 14. All good advice
So what's the problem? The fact that you’re not playing the same line twice or that you screw up? Are you overplaying?
Funnily enough, i don't think i play too much. I always consciously try not to. I think it's nervousness about maybe screwing up. In reality, in gigs esp., I don't screw up much (touch every kinda wood), but i might. Maybe I'm just kinda restless. I get dissatisfied with what i play. I keep thinking it should be better. And then of course, i risk making it worse. Just thought, it's gotten worse the more I've learned about harmony etc over the years. In the past, i would'nt have known how.
Discipline dude. If your guitarist was doing the same, you wouldn't call it improvising for sure, you'd probably call it f**king up.
Ouch. Fair bit of truth in that one If i can keep the creation bit for at home, I'll be fine. New Year resolution - 'I shall play what i bl***y well played last time.' fatback
 15. For some reason, these days, i can't play the same line twice. And i'm not a jazzer. it shouldn't be a problem, but this awful urge to change lines means I screw up sometimes when if I'd just stuck to the same line I'd have been fine. I'm playing mostly alt.country/swing type stuff atm, a lot of it original. This probably sounds like a weird problem, but it's making me nervous. Any tips for learning your own lines? fatback
 16. I used to have a '68 jazz back in the eighties and that neck was so fast. But later jazzes just don't feel the same to me. It must be the profile. I've got small hands, but whether or not I get cramp seems to depend on how U-shaped the profile is. I play with my thumb always anchored behind the neck (i play fretless) and pivoting, so the depth really matters. A wide flat board like my bb400s (P type neck) is sometimes more comfortable to me than a more rounded neck, even if it's slimmer. Do the specs of basses tell you the neck profile? I've never looked, and I should really cos i feel GAS coming on. fatback
 17. omg that is one pretty bass.
 18.
Mine is black and, with a black pick guard on it, looks even cooler - my Panther!
Now THAT'S how a bass should look
 19.
Ta Dah!
Ditto here, 8mm from Allparts did the trick. Arrived couple of days ago, although took less than a week (to Ireland). Postage cost more than the spanner, but it was worth it. Relief now flatter than a flat thing.
 20. I'm wondering whether a short delay might not be better than chorus for thickening. It can be that way recording/mixing, i've noticed. Any comments? I've never been able compare the two as playing effects. Don't mean to hijack ya thread, but like you I'm thinking of buying a delay, and I'm wondering if i don;t really want a chorus, or vice versa. fatback
 21.
Join a band. Make music. Remarkably motivating. If you can get in one that is already gigging you will probably have more motivation than you want!!
+1 to that. I find not wanting to look like a total twat highly motivating.
 22.
And so it goes on... Jazz has pretty much stayed as jazz. But look at what grew out of the Blues - that's why it's important. Pete.
Wow. As neat a piece of music history as I've seen. Nice one.
 23.
Good call. They do tend to "ride up" somewhat and make it hard to concentrate on playing your bass. They ain't called "@n@l floss" for nothing!
LOL
 24. Really appreciate the comparison. Great work Mr. WoT. It's made me seriously consider flats. thankee
