A DHA VT1 has done it nicely for me.

i'm afraid no death moves me if i don't know the person. lack of imagination? I don't know. What i do know is that as you get older (lots of peeps say this) you have to admit to a small sense of relief that the person who's died isn't you.

Pulling handbrake turns in the snow though - that's a distinct possibility.
My mate at work did that day before yesterday in his classic sporty thingy. Oh dear. Offside wing like an accordion. fatback
EQ is the thing. I like the idea of keeping it simple, uncluttered and if it sounds good, then fine..but I think you'd do well to add some comprehensive mid EQ, personally as just loud bass is just flooding the bass freqs. Gtrs might get away with less knobs, but I can't see bass working that way. My preference on any amp is a parametric 4 way band, FWIW.. as per the SM400
Sounds tasty. Fretless guys like a parametric mid to hit that 700 mwah. fatback
how Joan Armatrading said when he played on her album that he was the only fretless player she'd worked with yet who could play in tune. I agree he is amazing and by far my favourite fretless Bassist.. But seriously!! :@) That comment from Joan is rediculous!
Just tried to find that interview again, and no luck so far. That's what he said about the JA session though. i'm pretty sure I remember it accurately, because it struck me at the time. Maybe not so boastful as it seems out of context. i think he was talking about what he saw as his limitations, so he was kind of surprised. fatback

I think you'll lose a lot of 'mwaah' with flats. If you're worried about rounds eating the fretboard, try elixir coated. They don't chew up my rosewood board at all. fatback

Correctly positioned side markers, preferably fluorescent, are a life saver when some sod turns the lights out thinking it's more atmospheric that way. Only thing is, when you're practicing, you need to use the side markers and not the lines. i used to think I'd never get used to an unlined board until i got my side markers repositioned to the right places. But I think I could manage ok now. Good on ya for taking the leap and gigging that thing. fatback
Damn I should have asked for that for xmas.....Mick is one of the reasons I chose to learn bass
+ 1 I adore that man's playing. Total genius. Read an interview with him once in which he says he knew no theory whatsoever - didn't even know what a root was. And how Joan Armatrading said when he played on her album that he was the only fretless player she'd worked with yet who could play in tune. Total genius. fatback
Hi All. can someone reccomend some really easy music making software for me please. I use PC not mac. I dont play any other instruments other than Bass. I want to be able to create some simple chord progression with some possible drum effects music to jam along with on my bass so that I can help my improvisation. It just needs to be really basic so I can keep up! I hope that made sense. cheers Matt
FL Studio (Fruity Loops) is very good for knocking out accompaniments very quickly. The piano roll sequencer is really intuitive. If you don't need audio recording it costs $99 (US), if you do you need the Producer Edition at $199. You can find a lot of free vst instruments and effects around to use in Fruity. www.image-line.com/documents/flstudio.html There are some free sequencers about that would do the same job, but I don't know them, so i can't say how easy they are to use. fatback

Hi Emmett, a couple of other lads from the old sod are here, so you won't be lonely. A couple more and we can declare independence (joke). fatback

I'm old enough to have seen Taste many times as a kid, and the thing I most remember is the wild improv that went on. The media presented the onstage friction as clashing personalities, but it was Rory putting pressure on to get risk taking. Jazz, if you ask me. fatback
As to the size of the audience, you play AT a crowd of 100, you play WITH a crowd of 10. It can be harder to get the 10 dancing, though.
Oh, nice point. fatback
Sure you won't post? Fancy a first go on a fretless any of you fretless players think this would be good for learning the black art of fretless on?
Wot I learned on. And I'm still playing it every day. Get a luthier to check the neck and sort out any bumps, get the relief flattish, and away you go. Add a decent outboard preamp, and you've got a £800 bass. No doubt about it. Can't believe nobody's snapped this up. fatback

Swapping back & forth between 34" & 35" scale
fatback replied to molan's topic in General Discussion
For 5's I think string spacing is at least as important as scale length. The market trend over the last decade for 5's seems to be towards wider string spacings, which naturally aids slap'n'pop, but I'm not so sure this is a good thing as it almost inevitably means a wider and less accessible neck. So, if you're not really into slap, maybe going for a narrow, fast neck might be the way forward...
Interesting point. I'm still in mourning over a '68 Jazz I sold many years ago. Fastest most comfortable thing i ever played. OK, so I'm looking for a 34" narrow neck Jazz V. fatback -
Swapping back & forth between 34" & 35" scale
the best B is on one of my 34" scale basses
Any consensus on what the best 34" fivers might be in terms of B string? I'm facing the same dilemma; I want a fretted five, but I like my fretless 4, and I don't want any confusion betrween 34 and 35. I've small hands too, so sticking to 34 seems to make sense. fatback -
No such thing as "too Hot" with valves. Solid State is a different matter. Drive it as hard as you want. Dave
Thanks Dave. I'll enjoy that. Great box. I can tell already it won't be the last. fatback

I wouldn't pass on rosewood just because you want to use rounds. Avoid steel, and any grooving you get with rounds will be minor, slow to develop and easily sorted by a luthier. I use Elixirs on a rosewood fretless and seem to get no wear at all, and it's my main bass played every day. fatback

Hi dave, I just acquired an old VT-1 and the input is from a preamp. I can use the pad knob to calm everythig down, but the distortion I can get with a hot input might be useful. Should I avoid distortion on the way in? Does it mean I'm doing any harm (to the valve)? Terrible noob question, I know, but i haven't a clue how this thing works. Nice noises tho'. Thanks, fatback
