1.
How about a double bass that can be played like a bass guitar? My recommendation would be an NS electric cello, it has a 34" scale, comes with a shoulder strap and is small enough to be played like a bass guitar. I have a friend with one and its every bit as good as the electric uprights but in a more portable package. http://www.nedsteinberger.com/instruments/cello.php Oh yes, it comes in 4, 5 and 6 string versions too!
OOOOOOOH!!!! fatback
  2.
You're digging in too hard. The trick is to not try to "pluck" the string like you would with a bow & arrow. It's more of a kind of scraping motion with a bit of a dig as the pick leaves the string. The pick should be at a slight angle to the string and the tip of it should rake across the string, not hook it. Also your fingers should be fairly loose so the pick has some give to move over the strings, you shouldn't have to hold onto it too hard, and the majority of the playing dynamics come from wrist movement.
Hey, thanks! I really do feel I should be able to wheel out he sound when I need to. fatback
  3.
I can only play fingerstyle therefore pick players impress me.......
+1 Damn thing flies out of my hand every other bar. I'm embarrassed to admit I can't pick for toffee. Any tips? fatback
  4. Fretless and flats? What about Mwaah? I've always imagined that round were a big ingredient of mwaah. Am I wrong? fatback
  5.
I like it - it's where the bass is.
+1 Also, seems to me I use more open strings down there, cos they're handy, and open strings sometimes sound nice. fatback
  6. Bought a DHA pedal from Jules and it was better than new (true). Great comms, perfect packaging, light-speed delivery and an all round nice guy to deal with. Cheers mate, fatback
  7.
My basses came with names from the factory. One's called 'Jazz Bass', the other's called 'Thumb Bass'. Saved me all the trouble of looking through books of baby names. Try looking on yours to see if it's the same, on mine the names are near the end, on the bit that you play cymbals with.
LOL 'She', and worse still 'He', are definitely not allowed. 'My Baby' is permissible, as long as in indirect address, as in 'please let me introduce you to my Baby', when first entertaining a new gf . If you actually coo at your bass and call it 'My Baby' to its face, well, that's weird. fatback
  8.
i use one of these...http://www.redonionsolutions.co.uk/AB/ABVol.htm. I use it along side a digitech bp-50 so i can program two settings - one for each bass in terms of eq settings before going into my amp. the redonions pedal is great and very reasonably priced too well recommended
Just had a look. Spot on for me, thankee. fatback
  9.
If the BBs used the same butt-end adjuster as the old RB series I had, then a standard Gibson truss rod key fits perfectly. Shouldn't be hard to get hold of.
Any update on this? Does the Gibson key fit? What size? I'm about to tackle the relief on a bb. Much trepidation. fatback
  10. Are you interested in a trade for a trace elliot dual compressor? Cheers, fatback
  11. Just bought a lovely Sadowsky preamp from kev. Item perfect, speed delivery and well packed. Great comms and an all round top bloke to deal with. Pleasure dealing with you Kev. fatback
  12.
Good point! Here's the one I'd like to rediscover. A 1978 USA BC Rich Eagle with a Bill Lawrence bridge pick up...I've not seen it since 1996 but would love to find it again... One of the best basses I've ever owned!
Your avatar, silverfoxnik. Looks awfully like the beloved Wal I sold in Edinburgh many years ago. Please tell me it isn't. fatback
  13. Hi there, Commander Jack. Greetings from nuther nordie (ok nordwestie). You came to the right place. All the great info anyone could want her. fatback
  14. Yeah, caught the TV show by accident. Not my kind of music, but had me lapping it up. Dunno about albums but as a live performance it was stunning. Loved the risky wee jam at the end too. What is JPJ? 63? Please gid let me be as cool as that at 60+ fatback
  15. Hi, am I right there's no DI on this pedal? It doesn't seem to be in DHA's current product list. I'm not really looking for distortion, just a warm up, and DI would be handy. Cheers, fatback

Hi KJM, Maybe interested in this, if it's still available. How old is it? Would you be willing to post to Ireland and accept Paypal? Cheers, fatback
  17.
I don't get on with TE amps' EQ. I bypass as much of the preamp as possible when I (infrequently) use them at rehearsal rooms.
+1 If anything I boost mids for the fretless. But what's really needed for that mwah is a parametric to hit it spot on I think. fatback
  18. You know, there might be a useful buying principle in there: if you're buying cheaper basses, buy passive and something like the Sadowsky preamp, as the cheap electronics let down the cheap basses. Also, buy an outboard preamp, so you can use it with all your (cheap) basses. I'm in the interesting position of starting all over in terms of owning basses, and I like the bargain hunting element in trying to find very playable cheap basses (succeeded with my fretless bb400s). This thread has sent me Squier-hunting. fatback
  19. Forgive the shameful ignorance, but what does the 'c' in 'CIJ' stand for? Conceived? Constructed? Condoned? Created? Cyril? fatback
  20. Thanks for all that info. Great. Been gassing for a fretted 5 but haven't been able to justify big bucks to myself. Also, there's nowhere to try more upmarket basses where I live, so this gives me a real possibility. fatback
  21.
Also done the same mod on a VM jazz, no problems.
Those Squiers were passive, ie small cavity? fatback
  22. Hey, congrats! You'll never forget the first one. fatback
  23.
Choose your hat carefully ...
lol I think I'm going to pass on the hat in favour of cool shades. I'm determined to accessorise. Fatback's public deserve the best. fatback
  24. OK, so what about us baldies? Should we wear hats on the principle that hats are cool so why shouldn't we get to wear them like hairy bas***ds, or should we avoid them on the 'Edge' principla that everyone is going, 'well we know why he wears a hat'? fatback
