1. A good example is John Myung from Dream Theater, his Isolated parts sound quite sloppy and the tones are usually a bit naff but in the mix they sound killer nad ultra tight. If you can find them, Duff McKagan's isolated parts are usually super super tight!
2.
Anything with 'Yamaha' on the headstock. Unbeatable VFM in my umble pinion.
So true!
Plunge taken! Just brought a Godlyke Desciple 5 via evilbay will collect it this week and let you know how I get on, thanks for all the advice
Godlyke make brilliant basses! Another shout for anyone in a similar boat is the Peavey Cirrus basses, under £300 and pretty stonking and built like tanks!
3. It's not the Trinity Guildhall rock and pop exams is it? I've studied both, currently studying grade 8 bass guitar exams as a tester for my school and I've done my Grade 8 on Bass Trombone. Trinity Guilhall is pretty focused on classical stuff so many it's that? http://trinityrock.trinitycollege.co.uk/
4. I'd sell body parts for this, it's beautiful!
5.
He didn't always, no clue why the 10-string, be better on a chapman stick...But hey, to each their own he has a lot of fun. That's the real w***y side of Technical Death Metal I can only listen to in doses. Good for play mechanics but that's about it, they aren't trying to be melodic at all so if you want melody just don't listen to em.
He plays a 10 string as it makes it much easier to play what he plays, Custom he built himself, also doesn't play a stick as they sound different and play differently. The exact tune he's playing was written on a 24 fret 6 string, has had some octave re-jigging since, but he can still play it on a 6 string. (Saw these guys with Veil of Maya year to two years ago at some death-tech-core gubbins show ) Will totally agree, a genre with "tech" in the name is only that if it is technical meaning that's the focus... I'm all for "chops" on an instrument but only if you use it for a reason. I think the main riff the sweep bit goes into is chuggin' heavy though
6. Mark Michell of Tetrafusion and Scale the Summit. Brilliant bass player and awesome guy!
7.
So, a question for those Basschatters who have made a YouTube bass video. Have you received any offers of musical work or been asked to join a band as a result of it?
I know of two who have, not sure about Dave Marks but pretty sure he has too, Dan Houser became the bassist for metal band Veil of Maya after they saw a vid on his YT channel of his version of a section of one of their tracks and later on ended up playing with them at a show by chance. Asked to join after that when their bassist left. I guess that's half and half though. TonyDickinsonBG i know definitely has, he played one Daniele Liverani's most recent album (IIRC most recent) and Daniele asked him after watching a few of his covers. I think actually Mark Michelle joined Scale the Summit after they heard his stuff via some youtube things too. One example of the internet being a big tool as well would be the "Djent" band Periphery, they made it through Youtube/Forums orginating from Dream theater and Meshuggah covers which people liked and kept them interested as Misha Mansoor (band leader of Periphery) would start to upload covers, and then orginals and he already had peoples attentions. I find it all a bit pointless but I do find my self entertained, especially when people add stuff which is their own, or just to see someone have fun with a tune I like. I guess if someone enjoys it, and enjoys watching it great. Doesn't really bother me, the internet is full of pointless rubbish anyway (and this post is no exception!)
8.
Strangley barring budget basses the worst bass I ever tried was a Yamaha billy sheehan thing, loose bits, faulty pickup etc but also the best bass I ever played fit and finish wise was a Yamaha BBNE5 Nathan East.
Which model? Apprently there were a few issues with alot of the earlier, short run and prototype Attitudes due to the complexity of the builds in the enviroments they were built in. Weird that isn't it?! My more recent Yamaha Attitude LTD II is a corker though, never skipped a bit and solid as a rock Never touched anything by Yamaha of any kind of instrument (Drums, Brass, Wood winds, Pianos, strings, guitars and of course basses) which hasn't made me think "Wow. This just feels quality". Even the budget learner Trombone a pupil of mine has is incredible and feels lovely to play. That's mostly from the last 10-15 years though, wouldn't know about further back as haven't seen too much of that minus Trombones and Pianos (all been pretty damn good!) but that said, I am only 17
9. Ken smith KSD 706 (6 string) if you can find one maybe? There are a few but I'm having trouble remembering any names today!
10. Where can I find the massive ones? The ones which are like a full forearm in length? Always liked the look of them (Seems I'm the only one haha!) I tend to wear sweatbands on my wrists when I play live, often lose them though!
11.
i know this is late!!! i bought one of these heads its the worst head ever!! it farts out,if u leave modern chanel on 10 then change over to classic, the classic goes farty fuzzy reduced in vol till u turn the modern master down,iv had it at 2ohm but still sounds crap,if u let a string ring it fizzles out to a farty fuzz,it sounds bright and aggressive, ive had it full bore,if its not very impressive, the hartke 350 i had for short time was way better, the only thing is i cant find another in shops to compair if i have a bad one,the same old problem as i reported, turn master to half is fuzzy n farty,i had some one look at it he recond it was ok but it was putting out 170w@4ohm and bout 420w @ 2 ohm...every ones describing a different amp.....or should these be running better through cabs like 410/810s?
Sounds like your gain signal is all over the shop, but it's hard to tell without being there with the amp. The classic channel is valve driven so will start to break up due to the valve that's in there, which is a bit of a cheapy to be honest! Never got why amp companies do to that but they are only hurting themselves!
12.
Lets face it , anyone can learn how to play the bass but being beautiful is a gift from God . A bad player can have lessons , practise and improve but an ugly bastard will always be an ugly bastard .
13. I'd agree there are too many un-needed fills, but over all I quite enjoyed his take on the bass line and rate it equally with the orginal. That said the orginal is what I would have put on the record for sure. It's rather disco-y his take. Though his playing over the breaks for the vocals does grate me a little. Once or twice would have been ok if it had be less notes but over all I rather liked it. Would certainly agree more for fun but if he did that live I'd be happy with the performance Also, i think the tone is alright, heard thousands of other jazz basses and players in the style sound indentical (Then again, I'm a cloth eared distortion freak who plays trombone haha!) Edit: Now Silddx mentions it, he does have a very "bedroomy" feel to his playing. I'd agree he needs some more spiritual and real band and ensemble playing experience. Clearly I'm up too late on a school night haha!
14. Keen to see this
15. Where is the "Do I need a flowchart" flowchart?
16. Yes, and if I could afford one I'd buy one in a heart beat. Currently saving for a nexus head though to match my 410 cab! Played one with a Nexus Tube head and it was a flat out monster of thunderous rock grind. Real nut shaking tone, loved it!
17. I was always on the side of the "why use X Y Z if they will use A B C infront of it" or "why have so many pedals when only 1 or 2 pedals could do that" until I had a bigger set up myself after a few years of growth. I've found similar sounds with cut down setups, but it's just not the same tone or feel plus from years of using the same stuff I understand and know the bits of gear much better. So to answer the question, maybe he uses both as that's the sound that he likes? I use my "overly" complex set-up at times (compared to like Shep's it's nothing though haha!) including a pre-amp into the front of the amp sometimes as simply that's how my tone has evolved and that's the sound I like!
18. Fantastic pickups, for guitar and bass! They have alot of character, which I really like
19. Personally I don't rate EMGs for guitar at all, only heard one or guitar tones with EMGs that I've liked, BUT on bass I think the are really great! And do the hi-fi, clear and articulate thing really well

21. Welcome to the forum from a fellow Aberdonian. Not the most musical city in the world but it's all here! I'll keep my ear to the ground, I don't know any off the top of my head but may be able to get in contact with a few people around the city who could help. All the best!
22.
Ah, I see. So while certain manufacturers spend a (small) fortune in design/technology/material R&D, they'll skimp on feet?
It's like Dood has said before, why would companies spend a fortune on all this and skimp on valves and end up making something sound naff! Very strange.
23.
Various friends of mine saw them in Glasgow on Wednesday. They doo were all raving about how good the set was. Glad you guys enjoyed them too. It's nice to hear such positive thoughts after the predominantly "everything in the world is bad" threads that have been appearing on this forum recently.
I was there too, it was AWESOME! And, I was with some great friends and had a brilliant night, the set was perfect! Been a huge muse fan for years, love the album personally though Absolution will always be my favourite album (Fury is my favourite track!) Chris sounded HUGE with the bass,
24. I want this, but have less than triple figures to my name! All the best for what will no doubt be a CRACKING bass. The Yamaha RBX270 is killer stock, and those Dimarzios are mighty and sound brilliant! All the best with the sale,
25.
+1 on the string spacing - +1 on the scale and spacing - I'm pretty sure BTBs are 35" and 19mm spacing. I've found that the wider spacing works well for me - I trip over the strings less!
My BTB676 is 35" and 17mm string spacing, likewise with the newer TRB 1006s are 35" and 17mm I think the older ones used to be 19mm but have sinced changed
