Gibson Thunderbird, what are they like?
AttitudeCastle replied to deanbean502's topic in Bass Guitars
No, I didn't post for a row, I just wanted to give a balance of opinion, and I respect yours, which you are perfectly entitled too. Before my purchase I had only had P Basses, and I searched long and hard in making the decision to buy. I actually did not want to like the TBird, just so I could say, Ha! P Basses are the best. I spent the best part of an afternoon in the shop with the Tbird up against a 60th Anniversary PBass, both played thru Mark Bass, then Orange... just plucking the A string on both and listening. The shop suggested I bring my own rig down, and I nearly did! I then went away to think for 2 weeks whether I could justify spending that amount of money, but she was still there when I went back. My feeling is the PBass is like Church Bells ringing, whereas the Tbird is a Grand Piano Also looked at the Epi Pro, and was very taken with a natural oil one, for the money they are spot on, very good value. But worth the extra for the Gibson? Two different things, like comparing apples and oranges, but a purchase like a TBird has to come from the heart.
Oh yeah i completely understand i wasn't having a go at anyone i was just pointing it out as it seems people mis understood my post! A thunderbird through an orange rig sounds like a building being torn down, EPIC! Heard a few bands live like that and the bass has so much growl it's beautiful!
Hey, I didn't mean any offense, it just seemed (IMO) that you commented to slate the thunderbird than anything positive, which is fine as your entitled to it, just abit TROLL'ish in my view Thanks for the custom shop details, I thought it may had been up for grabs but I shall continue my adventure for one ^_^ Take it easy bro and sorry for any mis-haps, lol.
Well judging by the posts i knew (for the most part from what i could tell) that all the posters were and are Thunderbird fans, and i was sharing my view, i did also say i think they are great sounding basses, other than saying i found two dissapointing quality ones i never said anything against the bass what so over, i only complimented it! A "TROLL" is someone who disagrees and intentionally starts arguements on forums or comment sections and disagrees to all comments, insults and does not respect internet conduct, I feel we do not see eye to eye on a certain point (which i seem to be missing, but that is neither here nor there) But thank you for your words, maybe it's because i'm having a bad week i'm being a grouch if you find a nice example of a Gibbo Custom Shop T'bird (the older ones especially i've found) are mighty basses, though the older generation necks never suited me, and the newer ones sound too different to my ears to be as appealing, maybe one day i'll find the correct cross over era one for me! -

Also the Nikki Sixx models look and sound Incredible! I've played an Epiphone one un-plugged and heard a Gibson one through a dual Marshall Guitar Amp/Bass Amp rig which sounded the dogs whatsits! -
The other side of the coin.. I bought an '11 model brand new some months ago, and I love it. The finish is excellent, the build quality spot on. Yes, the bridge is a bit historical, so fitted mine with a hipshot supertone which made her fuller and richer. Had a pro set-up and she now has a pretty fast action. A very beautiful machine. Two crits, tho.. The barrel jack input is a poor design compared to the spring clip type input, and they have skimped on the build quality for the hard case.
Not having a go at you or anyone with this post but it's a good point for me to point out that i never dissed Gibson or the Thunderbird, in fact i complimented the sound! I just stated my experience but i did not say that the basses were bad, that i disliked them or that Gibson made bad instruments, though i did have some experience to share which i felt relevent. And glad you're happy with yours! I'm not a big enough T'bird fan to go for a Gibson one but i've toyed with the idea of an Epiphone one, and you're not helping :lol:I don't really have an extra £200-£500 to spend and i have a list of 30 things in that price range to throw money at haha! -
Good cheapish 5ers for tuning F# B E A D?
AttitudeCastle replied to topo morto's topic in General Discussion
I can hear up to 19KHz at the moment but i'm still a teen. I've been to told to expect to be able to hear up to about 16-17Khz if i keep my ears in good shape! And i can hear a low F# no bother, a low C# is pushing it but i can! Also, if you can get your hands on RBX 775 don't do that to it! They are too good for your experiements (Sorry, my Yamaha and RBX fan boy-isms coming through!) Though they are great basses so if you get one for a good price i'd say it's a solid bet for a good sounding and well built instrument, that or an Ibanez SR as they just seem to have a great consistancey in tone even at the bottom range. I think most bands who havbe F# players have guitarists with 8 strings or play on the more technical or chugging side so an Ibanez sounds right and suits the players with their light bodies and quick necks. Thats what i've noticed anyhow! French Bassist Yves Carbonne (famous for his Sub-bass guitars which are 10 and 12 strings tuned from the E below the E of a 4 string and his great bass playing/music!) has a 4 string tuned C# F# B E there is another bassist well known for his super low notes but his name escapes me! I Believe he is a memeber of the forum now too. -
Has anyone seen or played any of the "Noah" Aluminium basses? Chris from Muse has one of their Tele basses IIRC (they are Italian company) And they sound pretty snappy, but to be fair there is more elements than just body wood to create the over all sound. The metal body thing is seems (IMO) to be used in a really gimmicky way, but who knows maybe in a few years graphite basses will be really common (Not as common as wood, but a usual sight on stages and in stores) and metal basses will be like graphite basses today. Personally i doubt it but each to their own!
Nothing like a good old TROLL when you need one ;P Where's this custom shop one at? I'm interested, if it exists.
Hmm, i'm a "TROLL" am I? For giving my experiences, when I also have 1064 (at time of writing posts and that's 1253 including "off topic" and i'm pretty sure i've never been a "TROLL" their either) to my name and i'm sure many members will tell you I don't "TROLL". Including a Moderator or two. Not to mention another user (sorry to drag you into this retroman) has has similar experiences. Last i heard of the bass it had been returned to the owner a week before he moved from Aberdeen but that was a few years back so it could be anywhere. Sorry i don't know the exact where abouts of an instrument i played once for half an hour a few years back which belonged to a friends Uncle but if i'd know this exact thread would have come up at this exact point i'd have insured to take the serial number and keep in touch. Seems i dropped the ball, my bad. Edit: Spelling, content, language -
Hmmmmm........Pretty much the same experience I had with a brand new Thunderbird......... Managed to easily find over 20 faults on mine, and Gibson were next to useless........
Yeah, it seems a far too common tale with Gibson! -

I've played 2 Gibson Thunder birds and as much as i liked them was not impressed with the quality for the price, and one was a Gibson custom shop! The finish was patchy, the neck wasn't even, the neck felt like it had been coated in goo and some came off on your hand. Though i heard that one went back to factory and after much eeerrrring and aaahhhhing got back in acceptable condition. The Custom shop was just full off niggles you wouldn't expect from a Custom shop, like loose screws, dodgey pots, frets not being smoothed off, but once that was all seen too it was a great bass Played an Epiphone one which i really liked, and someones Goth (like Delberthots) Epiphone Tbird with orginal Tbird Pups that sounded good! Overall the Gibbo and Tbird thing isn't my sound, but the right one through the right (has to be valvey as possible!) rig sounds monster! -
HartkeUK haven't answered on here, and emails to Larry & posts on his facebook haven't had a reply either. That is not like them at all. I am really enjoying my LH500 but if I can get my drive and stuff in 1 head...
It's the Hartke Bass Attack pedal built into the head isn't it? It's not a full on distortion? Is it the exact same circuit as the bass attack or is it missing the EQ in favour of the heads overall EQ?

The 40-80HZ region (if you can) pump up, will help! I find doing the flash stuff no issue with only one guitarist, i actually find it better! More room but as long as you fill out the sound better, ie leaving the low E ringing when you do something, but for this you need to work out your chops and know your harmonies/fretboard/scales! I think if you can't do what you want without effects then effects won't help you, they only "augment" what your currently doing. Obviously this isn't a firm rule and is a vague rule and obviously if your like a well known fretless 6 string mod on here then that rule is out the window! But i find if i can get the thing down without effects, then adding them is like the cherry on teh cake to perfect things All IMO and IME
i had no idea there were so many rockers on basschat! im not going to say who A is, i cant believe no-one's got it! I tried to choose 3 very contrasting images and i think i was almost there. Letter C is indeed Guy Pratt
I know who all three are! If i say it, it'll spoil the fun! I'm going to say B as i swear far too much,i'm proud to say i'm english (something i don't do to often here in Scotland! ) but i am a big fan of the other two and a mix of all three styles and like all three's work but Steve 'arry Harris overall for me a person and player. (Though he is better in every way! haha )
Depresses me every time I come across manufacturers making instruments in interesting (non-wood) materials but don't have any original ideas beyond that. What's the point?
Agreed! And why would you buy one when hundreds of other and cheaper basses which sound identical. Why use Aluminium unless it sounds different? If it does why design pickups that make it sound woody? Then the metal body is just a gimmick! Maybe i'm just being cynical...
-
How different does it sound? Might get one for my Attitude!
Well, the board would usually need de-fretting, then on top there's the cost of putting in the inlays themselves. So for example, if you wanted a dot neck upgraded to standard pearloid blocks, you're probably looking at a hundred and something to cut the (cambered, therefore difficult to work with) board, add the blocks and smooth, then maybe another hundred or so for the de/re-fret, smooth, level, re-profile and polish. On top of all that, you'd be looking at an extra hundred or thereabouts more for the extra bling of fingerboard binding to set your beautiful inlays off should you be so inclined, (and why not????) A fair wedge to pimp yo bass but some people would consider it money well spent
If the bass was a custom build the board could be designed for the inlay in advance cutting the costs of that right? Thanks for educating me though!
-
Yes it does depend on allot of things but any one off, custom designed inlay work will add a significant amount to the cost of the bass. It's different for the likes of PRS or Gibson who use CNC mills to cut out their inlays and holes. CNC means it doesn't cost them much more to fit standardised inlays, even quite complicated ones. One off inlays are usually cut and fitted by hand, so it can cost a fair bit extra just to make the bass look tacky (oops, I mean trendy!).
I LOVE massive inlays, if one was already made how much would adding it to a fret board be (roughly in vague terms) because i'm tacky/trendy! My brother likes plain fret boards, and i like big 'ole inlays so each to their own! haha
-
How hard are massive inlays to do for those of you who build basses? Like ones spanning the board and such? Or does it depend on many things?
-
I've given a few to a model railway enthusiast who used them for telegraph/pylon wires and stuff like that.
Yep thats what i do! I do modeling with them, used a load of E strings to make power cable models and ropes etc, Also i use them instead of wire sometimes as it's usually stronger and rougher
-
They need to be big for them to reasonate at any useful volume, hence why doublebasses and contra double basses are massive!
-
I wish i still had my job so much, as i have Major Attitude, TRB and BB GAS! (I'd do anything for a BB3000 in wine red...)
-
Hartke have ridiculously good customer service, so i wouldn't be afraid to go direct to them, but seeing you've only had it 8 weeks try via GAK and if that doesn't lead anywhere i'm certain Larry will sort you out! So plus one to the above!
-
Contact Hartke, they'll sort you out! Fab customer service! (Or you could give it too me )

Really liked Peter Gabriel tonight! And Trombone Shorty was ace those weeks ago, he is a great guy met and jammed with him (on the trombone that is!) in New Orleans town at an open mic night!
