1. Basswood has great low end clarity, which is why i love it! Its reasonably light as well, which is why it was chosen as the bongo wood (they decided it sounded best, and teh alder prototypes were supposedly too heavy as the electronics weight alot (?) ) Its pretty "flat" (as in pretty transparent, think even sounding) so in comparision it can sound a little 'scooped' and has a very tight bottom end/low register. I really like basswood as a wood for basses, for the same reasons it is common on 7 string guitars and 'shred' guitars.
2.
Ive managed to find a cheap seven string to last me until ma Mango is ready. Its an HK so dont know how good it will be but we will soon find out. I pick it up next weekend.
Did you get the HK? Some pics! As the thread hasn't been updated in a while, so this can be on his behalf http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Gallery/261/ Just found that when looking around the ACG site! Looks like its going to be a stunner DB!
3. Why does no one like basswood but me? Haha! Doesn't the James Johnston Jazz (JJJ from now on ) Have different pickups? Plus i think that Blue is worth the extra haha! Though i'm not fender (well, fender styled. Minus some P-s ) man, or a Jazz bass man
4. One Bass to rule them all, One Bass to find them, One Bass to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. I am a Lord of the rings fan boy But my Yamaha Attitude every time! It means so much too me, i got it at a rough time as a birthday present (i still paid for some of it though!) It will always be very dear too me even though i'm a 6 string player and would end up having to convince a reform of my band or quit if its a choice the Attitude (LTD II in seafoam green!) wins everytime. And i mean, everytime
5.
Have just had a quick look at both, and I can just about afford them. Would I need to buy a separate cabinet for the Little Bastard? As you may have guessed, I don't know a huge amount about it all!
You would for the Terror Bass or the Little bastard, or for any head. Also, good idol choice I've used a chain of muffs too get his crazy drive sound (Metal muff, that other metal muff, the english muff'n and a bass bigg muff to blend in the low end. Looked pretty odd but sounded tasty )
6. Seen almost all these cats My dad is now living in N'awlins town! Love the weather, and i'm not one who suffers from the allergies there! Try a 'gator burger if you can haha!
7.
I haven't seen any new ones around for a while. All the shops with Flying V basses that I've seen on the web, show either out of stock or discontinued(?) It does have a surprisingly big sound, for such a small body.
They were a limited run i believe?
8.
I accept your apology There were some interesting interviews on Youtube, from when he's attended Scientology demonstrations during Project Chanology - however, they've since been removed. Incidentally, I thought Tom Cruise was pretty decent in Valkyrie.
I saw all of them, he kept saying stuff then the other people (who clearly had no clue he had some form of fame!) around him were like "erm, no thats not what we believe we are... [insert wild statement] " And no worries and i enjoyed the last samurai
9.
I'm not bashing his bass playing because of him being a Scientologist I just can't stand the whole thing, I've read a lot of books on the subject, some of my favourite actors have turned that way and I have lost of respect for them, not their acting, them. Anyway sorry to derail the thread. Also I understand you rant and also just because it's my opinion doesn't mean I'm saying it's right.
Also sorry for carrying things off topic, and i could have been less rude wayne so i apologise! What they do is their buisness, as long as they keep rolling out decent films its all good! But Iconic, buy IT! If you don't like it, i'll nab it from you. Simple
10.
I like the look of them and who actually uses the scalloped frets?
Alll the time! I had the entire neck of my old squire scalloped (by me and a chisel! haha didn't go prefectly) i'm considering having it done (properly this time!) on my 6 string, Before i snapped the neck and i have no pictures unfortunately (which means in Basschat terms it doesn't exist but i promise you it did/does!) And 1) Juddging people by "Religion" is wrong (except in the UK its considered a Cult!) 2) He has become a better person since paying/"joining" 3) What he does is his own thing, even if it is a cult, and 4) A nicer man you will not meet! Unless like jesus comes back and introduces him self! Also, he supposedly still acts pretty much catholic, but anyway, sorry for ranting etc! I just think he gets unneccesary bashing for being a Scientologist and because he "isn't a real bass player" when you can't make everyone happy so why try!
11.
Make me an offer, guys! I will probably accept it!
A pack of gum? These are great guitars! Bump on me!
12.
You need a secondhand Stingray
Mate thats your answer to EVERYTHING!
13. Also, that person must be a Mr. Big fan! PGM300 in the background and a Yamaha Attitude! I've been after a PGM300 for yonks! (Though apprently it would have to be a 301 so my brother could borrow it as he hates locking trems! haha) Yamaha make great basses though! And from the older stuff i've played i'd say its been great quaility from then till now!
14. They all have necks based more or less on the "baseball bat" style late 60s P's and Telebasses. I wanted one of those for AGES, but kept missing out on them, they have a single out put, no scallops, a cut down working mans version of the Attitude! So think BB414 but bigger, considerably bigger! If you've played one of the squire Tele basses or 60s P-basses its kind of like that in feel, If its in good nick £200 sounds like a great price! I'd rather one of those over a Fender P any day! (well, most days!) I think Dosi on here had one?
15. I'm not after one per se I just think they are great, and wondered why Conklins aren't popular here! Not played a GT-7 only the GTBD and a GT4! Though from i've played i can say this will be quailty! Plus i can't afford it, am on a bass buying ban, and need a new amp
16. If this had been up 2 months ago it'd be mine! Ah well, AMAZING basses! Erm, bump? On me!
17. I think its still good to watch every now and then, but i'm not a regular anymore. Though i enjoyed Hugh Lauries stuff, his album is great! Saw him in New Orleans! He also played on a meatloaf thing if i'm right...
18. The Orange Bass Terror isn't too far out you budget haha I've used one and i love how gainy they get, but the sound isn't for me! Spend a good hour or so just twiddleing every knob till you get something too work (taking into account whats been said here!) Thats what i did on my current amp to dial out some "wool" on my Ashdown MAG and now i really like the sound!
19.
This is down to the prestige of owning a Stradivari instrument rather than any tangible superiority. There have been many blind tests carried out where so-called experts have been completely unable to correctly identify a Stradivari when play alongside other violins, both old & new. There's just as much horseshit & snobbery in the world of vintage classical instruments as there is with vintage electric guitars & basses
Well the stradivari are considered THE best, down to the mans skills and the woods he used. PRS used the same woods from the trees around his work shop to use the very same woods that stradivarius used! There are only what 30-40 in the world? I've had the privilidge of playing one and it felt better than the one i used to play when i actually learnt the violin, but it didn't radiate being worth £100K+ but then again i've played MIA P-basses and custom shop Ps worth £2K and they have felt the same way more than a Squire but i didn't feel the pennies. With "classical" instruments it more down to playing, and no so much tone, as alot of tone comes direct the player but tone is an element. They are meant to be the very pinicle of of violins, they are meant to be the best sounding and best playing (Disclaimer: I am no violinist! I can just play to a VERY basic standard! I am a bassist and Bass trombonist! Also this is no dig at Squire or fender or the great Stradivarius! I love P-basses! Also its not like we're talking about Paginini! haha ) Its just things aren't done the same way and i think its a taste thing, which in turn can be snobbery. Like those who will play a certain amp companies stuff and no one elses for example not mentioning any large american amp companies *cough ampegers cough* (Joking!) I play and prefer Laney amps for example, and many would scoff at that so its pretty similar isn't it? I prefer the newer modern 'fresher' instruments but if it sounds good and feels good i'll play it! Its music, an art. Not science! Please don't form a mob
20. One thing about Ashdown is they get a beautiful "Grunt" out of them! I've found it takes a good while to find the sounds that i like, though they do a nice fat warm sound with ease and with buckets to spare!
21. Supposidly, as all the wood in the older instruments was from trees left un touched for much longer they sound better. Yamamahs super BBs are treated to imitate this older wood as again supposidly there is always sap in wood (even in minute amounts) and as it ages it crystalises and "how far along being crystalised" as it were is what effects the sound and Yamaha use stuff (soundwaves and pressure is my guess) to artificaly crystalise the sap, in the same way that "fake" diamonds and "fake" amber are made, and by "fake" i mean the ones which classed as real but are made in a lab or studio etc as you can tell the difference in the shapping and the structure of the molecules I don't know what truth is in that, but that is a mix of what i've heard, and what i'd guess!
22. I find these hard o play because of the string spacing (which i believe is 20mm? Or something close to that!) If your not use to sixxers, or your prefered spaing is tighter these can be tricky to get used too, However they sound GORGEOUS and have great necks, and the spacing isn't an issue when your used too it (though some never do get used to it!) also makes slapping a breeze. Ace basses, and this one is the best colour Bump on me man!
23. I think the "Ashdown wool" label comes from their 1x15"s and the Mag range! Very easy to get bags of wool with the MAG 115s BUT With some EQ they can go from Wool to deep phaat bottom with nice midds and a fair top end (no jokes ) more old school voiced but definately usable!
24. Many of you will dislike this but this thread isn't for hatin'! (Something which the Basschat community does lightly so bravo!) And this technically isn't a bass line but: I play "my version" which means simplified that made me get an attitude and work my socks off at bass! (Its the Low D of the Attitude i love! Other basses just don't sound the same!) OH and added untold respect for Bass players and made me a complete 4 stringer at heart, even though my go too is my 6! That was in the first few months (like 3 or 4) of playing bass
25.
I don't think it's a lack of effort on Bill Conklin's part. Remember that the Groove Tools operation was far, far bigger than Overwater's venture into a buget range. At their peak, Groove Tools basses were selling very well in America and were being carried by major stores like Guitar Centre. So many Groove Tools basses were sold that Overwater couldn't even dream of matching those figures. At the same time, Bill Conklin was cresting a wave as Talkbass seemed caught in an ERB frenzy a few years ago. A Conklin was the bass to have, and with Bill being the main man in the US for building a bass like that, as well as doing guitars and his EUB thing they were extremely busy. Surely, more busy than Overwater's shop has ever been (no disrespect). So, you're one of the most sought after luthiers in the country (and not forgetting how massive America is...), in a period of particular interest and your name is also appearing on large numbers of basses produced in Asia to be sold as 'buget' instruments. Surely something has to give somewhere! In fact though, it appears that quality control was never a massive issue for Conklin. I recall Bill saying he was very pleased with the Groove Tools project when it initially closed. Groove Tools basses have always been well spoken of, as an accessible means to a 7 string bass or just as a well made 4 or 5 string bass. I think the biggest problem Bill had was managing relations with the builder/supplier and eventually it went south or the contract ended and was not renewed. This was the era when GT basses were referred to as discontinued, although Bill spoke tenatively at the time of bringing back a buget range of instruments. Since they came back to the market there seems to have been some quality control issues, but again this would be a difficult thing for Bill to tackle directly. He'd have to go to Westheimer with his concerns and hope they can fix it. However, he is running his shop day to day so I expect these issues are just a fly in the ointment right now as his main concern is no doubt knocking out top quality handmade instruments.
Very well said!
