1. No way i could afford it but any sound clips?! Best of luck with the sale Great price and Gareth is a top class man!
2.
Really? I find that amazing. Personally, I think it's all bollocks and the nut should be made of a material similar to the frets. Brass is probably best. I find it hard to understand why most basses don't have zero frets. it makes perfect sense, Patrice Vigier has the right idea. He also believes through necks are a bit stupid. He's right I think.
Through neck as in neck through body or? I'd say Graphite or brass (something slick and tough for me so i can use my de-tune) probably brass, looks good and is solid!
3.
Im glad you mentioned 'Aint nobody' ive tried to it learn on a 4 and it just aint working!! Hence the search for a decent 5 string for the new function band! A lot of the songs ive been asked to learn go lower than a 4, if i want the job i need the right tools, can anyone recommend good 5's below £1000???
Yamaha Or Ibanez, both have everything from £300 too £1000 and both will be well made sound great and have a slick easy too play neck, great if you play a 4 normally and only use the 5 on the odd occasion!
4.
No comment on whether its better (my CV P is basswood but "better" would be down to personal tastes IMO) but i have always assumed its cheaper. My CVP is light but my CV Jazz (also basswood) weighed the same as my HW-one Jazz which was Alder.
True i guess! The musicman Bongo is made of Basswood as is the Universe Ibanzez guitar, both expenisve awesome instruments, i guess its down to taste! Though as a soft wood its gram for gram just a tiny but lighter than alder, I think the CVs use heavier older school components but i guess i'm not totally sure! Agathis is a cheap wood as is Basswood, but personally i feel Basswood is more usuable as Agathis is wierd and has certain "pockets" of frequencies severly cut and some boosted if you know what i mean? What as most common woods are even sounding but have character, liek Alder being punchy and Ash having a sort of scooped sound
5. Basswood is a better wood (even from lesser cuts I think...) Than Agathis as it has a clearer tone and more even sound no? Plus its light great wood if you ask me!
6. I always wondered, can you push the valve in this into distorting? (Or because of the way the pre-amp designed that can't happen or?) As the SVP BSP I (and now Dood as well!) Have, has a Valve for the Overdrive channel and thats one of THE best overdrives i've ever heard I'm planning on getting a GK neo cab and might get a LH500 to go with I know they are designed to stay clean but at (crazy deafening from what i hear!) high volumes does it break up? Anyone got any sound clips? Not much on the net
7.
i fancy somthing to keep me busy in the summer, so im thinking about making my own bass cab to match the head im going to buy. (Hartke HA3500 or Mag 300) Celestion speakers seem to be the ones to go for and the cab will be made out of plywood. How do you guys think it will compare to the real thing?
I'd say Hartke but depends what your after, And Celestions are a good choice!
8. Do it, then i can borrowed it too strut around the 'deen!
9. I played a Mahogany 9 string which weighed like 17lbs or something like, and a Mahogany double neck Les paul guitar and bass which weighed almost 20lbs i'd say! Both owned by the same guy he is 6' 7" and about 17st I'm 5' 11.5" and 13st so erm yeah i wasn't noodleing for very long!
10.
The prices of Warmoth stuff varies massively depending on what you want - if you're prepared to finish a body and neck yourself for instance you could save a couple of hundred quid when you take into account what they charge, special finishes and the dreaded VAT/Import Duty. Stuff like bound fingerboards and block inlays add allot to the price as do fancy facings on bodies. They have a pretty good 'neck & body builder' section so you will know exactly what the basic price will be for what you want, then add on shipping and duty etc (about 40 percent according to someone on the forum). One thing is certain though, they're NOT a cheap option but they are very nicely made and you can have pretty much anything you want.
http://www.dutycalculator.com/ ^(found By 7string) Should calculate it for you! Depends on the price of shipping your getting through warmoth however!
11.
my question is, since i have always had a passion for punchy, growling bass sounds, a good example is "We Care A Lot' by Faith No More, i was wondering if i could still get that punch out of passive pickups to any level? if not, how close? being that i am using it for recording so i have a lot of adjustments i can make on the desk. another question would be, if i do get actives will they give the bass the quality it lacks from low quality build?
My bass tone is 99% growl 1% everything else, and it only works with passives for me!
12. Don't know why people don't like the shape! Personally one of my favourite looking basses, and i've always had GAS for a Warwick Vampyre 5, not played one but heard one, and the tones are quite punchy in the low mids, classic warwick sound
13. Anyone else find the MIM range too expensive? I mean £500+ for A MIM Precision?! Anyone else remember when they were £350? I'd say the squire personally!
14.
I have a MB210 I use for rehearsals and think its great. Very small, lightweight and very loud. Quite bassy sounding too. If you're in the area you're more than welcome to come along and try it out.
How does it handle the Low B? I'm considering the MB210/MB115 as i don't think i can strech to the MB212 / a Neo 212 cab + RB head
15.
Seems to be that way for certain brands, especially guitars IMO. I will stick my neck out and say that Gibson are top offenders in this. The mid-life crisis market is a very lucrative one, especially for aspirational items such as motorbikes, sport cars, and musical instruments (rock and roll ones, can't see anyone splash out on a top of the range flame maple veneered bassoon to cure their crisis). People are cashing in on that!
A top of the range flame maple veneered bassoon will run you £22 000 or there abouts! Now don't get me started on the contra... hahah Totally agree with you on this one, maybe its because all Gibson Endorsees are balding? or have so much gunk in their hair its all going to fall of in a heap? Haha just joshing to you gibo players!
16. I have a thing for Yamaha so they get my vote A friend owns a 170 and a 270 both great basses for the money i think! AND The yamahas own nickle factory strings are actually quite good (in my opinion!) so they don't sound awful when you plug in for the first time!
17. Why do Attitudes always go so low on here?/Thrown in as a P bass class and in that sorta price range? Always upsets me to see an Attitude going for £500/£600 i bough mine for £1650!! BTW That is THE Nicest looking stingray 5 i've ever seen! Best of luck with the look for a new bass!
18. Make sure you remember to treat the Nut of your bass too! Wore mine down quick usuing it in every second song! AWESOME pieces of kit, dunno why they are less popular on guitar!
19. Shuker! He makes P basses for Simon Nix and JJ Burnel
20. There are a few threads here on them, do a search Was thinking bout getting a 7... They don't seem bad if you get a good one, and if you argue enough can get replacements till you get a good is one what i remember people saying?
21.
I've got a quote from Shuker for a fairly basic PJ bass, I also costed up a Warmoth that was similar (spec wise). The Warmoth was around 1/2 the cost, "great!" I thought, but that was before vat/duties/shipping. Add all that in and the difference drops to a couple of hundred quid. I know where I'd spend the money.
Anything with 6 strings + seems to run over £1K ever where i've poked my head round, apart from ACG but i've never played, or had experience with one and the body shapes aren't totally to my liking though i'm not discounting UK based luthiers! I'd prefer to spend my money here! Just the Gecko seems a great deal, i like the look and the options so thats what is at the top of the list At the mo!
22.
Fair enough, but you (presumably) wouldn't want to use budget fittings and even using fairly decent, run of the mill stuff you could easily get near the £1500 mark with bridge, tuners, pickups, electronics, and all the little things like neck plate, screws, strap buttons. I'm all for building just the bass you want, I'm just saying it's surprising how the costs mount up - approach with caution, unless you're a millionaire...
My lack of money is how i started look at warmoth haha! I'll keep looking around man! Your a Spanner -> The works! haha
23. I really want this now =| haha seeing ERB has made me want it MORE haha! Any trades? No? =/ Then i'd need to organise getting it here, haha Best o' luck with the sale
24.
Bear in mind you'll have to add vat to your costs too (to the cost of both the parts and the shipping), as well as finishing, hardware, pickups, electronics, strings and setup if you need it. Warmoth parts are very nicely made - generally better than the far Eastern fleabay stuff, with the big advantage of being able to customise your parts, but my advice would be to add it all up, look on the HM Customs website to get a better idea of import costs and take a look at what the total cost of the final finished bass will be. Then you can compare it to what you could get off the rack at a shop, or even from a luthier - maybe the difference won't be as big as you think. Sorry to p#ss on the fireworks
After two e-mails with Warmoth what i'd want (Gecko 6 with some things like paint ) and searching the HM sites, (I couldn't find exact figures but its roughly) at total charge of 40% Maximum as far as i can tell which is apprx. £850 or there abouts if my mental maths is right, Which for a Swampash/Basswood body 6 string isn't too bad. It was just an idea for a second 6 which would be nice, If i went to a luthier i'd need £2000 so i could go a bit crazy haha! And unfortunately the only basswood 6s i know of the the Musicman Bongo (£1500+) and all these budget american first six strings =/
25. Try playing in my 'prog' metal band! (I call it wierdness instrumental noisey metal and its 'my' band haha!) last gig we played opening for a biggher band we played a 40 minute set, which was 3 songs I find repetition of playing and really knowing how the part fits with the other instruments helps.
