Vintage Jazz through a B15n or MIA J Deluxe through POD?
Soulfinger replied to TimmyC's topic in Bass Guitars
Gee, that´s hard... I´d say track 2 is the passive bass with flats, but then there´s that slide at the end where I *think* I can detect a trace of roundwound noise... Track 1 has a more "sculpted-by-onboard-EQ" kind of sound to me. OTOH, I´m sure I´m wrong. From the player´s standpoint, I´d probably have chosen the Ox axe for the second track - the song has a slight 60s vibe to my ears. -
Michael Mantler/Don Preston: Alien - Great stuff, but probably the scariest record I own. Makes you feel really uneasy. Paul Weller: Days Of Speed - Live recording, just the man and his guitar (ok, sometimes another man and his guitar as well ). Dresden Dolls: Yes, Virginia - This is such an amazing album, fantastic songs, lyrics, playing and singing. There is an occasional bass overdub but nothing the music couldn´t do without. Enrico Rava/Ran Blake: Duo Noir - very subtle, very cool, yet soulful. John Surman/Jack DeJohnette + London Brass: Free and Equal - It doesn´t get better than this. Two stellar jazz musicians and the best of British brass players, ECM recording quality, stunning compositions and arrangements... Then there´s Keith Jarrett, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Gianluigi Trovesi... I could go on and on...

Re.: Flea - just heard that one of his houses burnt down in the Malibu fires. Let´s hope it wasn´t the one he stored his basses in...

Hooray for Tribbys! Good looking couple, and excellent basses. Good thing I already have one or else I´d be GASsing now...

how can I make my MIM Jazz play and sound better?
Soulfinger replied to thumbo's topic in Repairs and Technical
I got unexpectedly great results with my 1999 MIM Jazz when I strung it with Yamaha stainless steels I had lying around (they came with my BB414) and plugged it into my Sansamp Bass Driver DI. The strings made a world of difference in terms of growl and punch, and the Sansamp rounds out the bottom nicely and adds a bit of tubey warmth. Great combination. The bass still needs a proper shielding job though, it´s rather noisy ATM... -
I use Planet Waves straps - one leather and one nylon, extra wide. Both are really comfortable. The rawhide inside of the leather strap helps with neck dive, but the nylon strap works just as well with my Fenders.

I threw up in the middle of tonight's gig...

Sympathies, WoT! At least it didn´t happen live on TV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tXzKpmRrFs -

I had that problem once - turned out to be a broken solder joint inside the battery clip. I´m pretty sure the BB615 doesn´t work in passive mode.
well, the reason I was thinking something other than a Fender P was that I was hoping for something a bit more smooth/less growly than the passive Fenders
In that case a Sandberg would be a great choice IMHO.

Here´s an appetizer for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvZqflzkBL4 Not coming to Austria, it seems...

A small-bodied, lightweight and quality compromise would be a Yamaha BB-404. Funky little bass that´s sadly been discontinued and cheap as chips on the second-hand market. In terms of sound and neck shape it´s closer to the Warwick IMHO. I really like mine.
-
I do like Sandbergs, but if you want pure passive P growliness, they don´t really deliver IMHO. They sound too clean, polished and smooth to my ears. Personally, I´d go down the Fender HW1 or Japan route. If you have more to spend, I´ve heard good things about the Lakland Bob Glaub and Duck Dunn sigs. And that Shuker sure looks lovely!

Mmmh, tuxedo. Classy. I´ve seen that black/white/rosewood combo played by Dave Holland with Miles, Stu Zender with Jamiroquai and Scott Thunes with Zappa. White pickguards are underrated IMO. Congrats on the new bass - the MIM Classics are cool, but I´m sure you´ll be happier with the HW1 in the long run.

Hey, I actually like that! Just what are all those switches for?
that mustang is unaturally glossy... its beautiful, where did you get it from?
Thanks! Got that one from a guitar player on eBay UK. It´s a cracking bass - with the heavy-gauge, dead rounds it came with it sounds massive, sort of double-bass-goes-dub. It currently has light-gauge XLs and sounds completely different - very lively and defined, even slaps well.
 I heard Old Mother Riley played bass on most of their stuff.
Not true. In fact, it was Carol Kaye. She´s just too modest to admit it.
A man of great taste Steve.
I knew I´d seen that ´burst P somewhere before. Very cool collection.
where did you get the black P?
Got it from a guy in Germany who decided he preferred Jazz basses. I _think_ he bought it from Ishibashi.

You could always try a set of taperwound strings. Due to the exposed core, these sit lower in the saddles. Don´t forget to file the nut down as well. I know that is non-reversable but essential for good action on a fretless.

Picked up a new-to-me Precision - a CIJ ´62 with US pickups. As usual, I´m blown away by Fender Japan quality - it´s flawless and sounds killer. Here´s my trio:
Eek! Be sure to take your camera on your next trip to the local guitar shop: to catch the looks on their faces when you ask for a 9-string set.
I bet some of my basses cost less than a 9-string set. @ ARGH: Light?!? In the pic you look like you´re crying for someone to help you out from under that bass.
Might not be the neck needing adjustment but a replacement bridge put on way off-centre.
Spot on - the strings don´t line up with the pickup pole pieces either. Must be the bridge. That poor bass has had a rough time. I wouldn´t trust that neck without actually seeing it.
