My lot have agreed to totally shake up the set list so today I learnt and worked on an arrangement of We Can't Stop. It wasn't hard Tomorrow I will be learning This Love by Maroon 5.

Does anyone play in an 80's covers/tribute band?
paul h replied to paul h's topic in General Discussion
I have a first rehearsal today with my new band (well, old band that have talked me into rejoining) so I will be suggesting the 80's route and see what happens. Wish me luck! I'm going to need it especially considering the song list they sent includes Shake a Tail Feather, Do You Love Me and Proud Mary amongst others. I don't think it's going to go too well! -
Anyone here ok at drawing/designing? Well...
Trust me, it doesn't
Hahaha. I need to be in a tribute band for someone who only has one album. Which songs should we play? All of 'em. -
Hopefully that's why most of us do these things mate That's really nice he approached you to do it. I hope it goes well Paul. Link us to the result when it's out.
Will do. The last one...which starred Alan "Bricktop" Ford got a decent European distribution deal so hopefully this next one will on Amazon in a few years
Looks like us Hemeloids have similar tastes Paul.
I don't suppose you know anyone who wants to be in an 80's band? -
Cool man! Thanks Good to hear you've got a commission for some scoring, are the shorts you did on YT or something? I'm interested in hearing them.
This was a few years ago and to my knowledge nothing ended up on YouTube (thank god...I was never really happy with them) I was also asked to score a feature once but as I was already designing the posters, opening titles and closing credits I felt I had to pass. Luckily the same writer/director is working on a new screenplay and has already approached me. It's all just low budget indie stuff so I will be doing it more for the love of it than for money and fame

Thanks. I wrote the boogie riff probably over 20 years ago now I had totally forgotten about it but something about the new guitar must have reminded me of it. And yes...the opening riff of that track reminded me of a certain band and I'm rubbish with track names
Cheers guys Fascinating to hear it sounds 'ravey'
Actually it sounded very cinematic to me. Exactly the sort of thing a music supervisor would like for the "car chase through the kasbah" scene. I dabble with scoring films...I've done a handful of shorts and should be contributing to a feature next year...so I'm a bit jealous
We Run an 80s Band "New Retros" alongside our Blondie Tribute "Heart of Glass" and find it works well, certainly a market for it, lot of 80s themed parties and the like, getting the sounds right is pretty easy these days, especially if your drummer can play to click, lots of work thru agents for this kind of thing also,,
I had a listen to the Blondie stuff. Sounds great. I wouldn't mind being in a tribute band of some kind. At least it would limit all the in band arguments about material
The set-list posted looks great - I`d love to see a band doing all those (so long as they did them well that is).
Thanks. I'm so pleased to actually find some like minded people for a change -
Paul, I can see that echoing your expression gave the impression that my post was a direct rebuttal of yours, but it wasn't meant to be that. It was more of a general comment on the attitudes of some people here, not aimed at yourself directly. Perhaps I should have put through several drafts before firing it off as you did your reply! I too enjoy discovering new stuff, even if its old stuff that I've only just discovered. However I also like some of the old classics. It doesn't have to be an either or situation, new and old stuff can coexist, neither is inherently good or bad: As you rightly say it comes down to do you like it or not (and, in a band situation, do the audience like it).
Yeah...sorry about that. You caught me in a bit of a bad mood A bad mood caused by a couple of days of being treated like a pariah by certain basschatters because I dared to say I didn't like old music. I'm a delicate soul and I find I quite easily get put on the back foot when confronted by all the angry axe grinders on here telling me my opinion is wrong. p.s. I just went into another long rant here and thought better of it and deleted it I instead I will pop into my 80's cover band thread to make myself feel better

I posted these in a thread about my new guitar but they went fairly unnoticed. A £100 Westfield Les Paul Junior recorded with Reason. Not meant to be finished tracks but rather just test pieces. https://soundcloud.com/robotrobotrobotmusic/not-that-kind-of-boogie https://m.soundcloud.com/robotrobotrobotmusic/food-fight
This is the real trick, find material that you really enjoy playing and which is also in demand, best of both worlds. Done it myself in the past, maybe it'll happen again in the future. Like some of the stuff I'm doing at present but its interesting how little of the atists we cover that i actually listen to out of choice in private. Ditch Come On Eileen at your peril though, I reckon it would be a real crowd pleaser come close to chucking out time, need a fiddle player though.
Correct on all points...even about Come on Eileen (maybe I can use the lack of a fiddle play as an excuse?) -
Looking at the list rejigged I think the ratio is actually much worse than 1 in 4 or 5 for me personally but I could still see there being the market for it. Having said that I'm not thrilled about quite a few songs in the set I'm doing at present. The advantage is that its not my band so I can walk away from it when I've had enough. With the singer thing I was actually replying to Paul S's post (Journey, Foreigner etc) sorry didn't make it clear.
Well that's fair enough. We can't all like the same stuff because that would just be horribly dull! If I'm honest I am actually very surprised how many songs on the list I actually like. I did cut Dexy's Midnight Runners out though -
Aha. Sir, you are a bass player who is thinking straight. I too have a dislike for what I call "Old Man Pub Rock". So what if you can twiddle away, set your geetar on fire and play a few Hendrix songs? There are some "music pubs" where that is called for, but my guess is that pubs are filled with 30, 40 and 50 somethings who are not remotely interested in whether someone is the 76th best guitarist in the county or not. I think a lot of people will turn up to pubs only vaguely realising that there is a band on, so you need to cater for the masses and give them populist stuff. I think your 80s notion is a good one, although don't neglect the 90s. We're out tonight and the set will be filled with things like Park Life, Mr Brightside, House of Fun, Walk Like an Egyptian, some Oasis stuff, 99 Red Balloons, Disco 2000, Stand and Deliver, Video Killed the Radio Star, Tainted Love, Chelsea Dagger etc. Real fun up-tempo stuff .... and not a bald man with a bandana and tight jeans in sight.
I too would enjoy playing 90s, 00s and 10s stuff. The main reason I have focused on the 80s is purely down to ease of marketing! Imagine a band called One-Eighty (or a variant of) with a tagline: Playing number ones from the eighties! No ambiguity, no stumbling around with...well, we play a bit of everything really. No being booked by people who are not sure of what you do. And imagine the absolute joy of being able to turn down the requests for Brown Eyed Girl by saying "Sorry mate, 80s number ones only!" -
Hope you've got a really good singer Paul, that 80's stadium rock stuff is the easiest stuff in the world to sing really badly. The guys that can pull it off convincingly are worth their weight in gold to a band.
Well the full story is this: I have been talked into rejoining my old band with the promise of well paid wedding and function gigs. However that is what I was told the first time I joined and that never happened Since I left, their set list seems to have gone back in time at least 10 years. I'm not convinced the big gigs will happen...and I am not convinced I will want to stick around playing Proud Mary and Do You Love Me and Shake a Tail Feather, with Valerie and Sex on Fire thrown in etc. So the plan is to talk to the guys about it and see if they like the idea. I am sure they will say no as they do seem to prefer sticking to I, IV, V whenever possible So I fully expect to be having to put a new project together myself. With regards to singer ability...I feel there is enough play in the list...and a lot more number ones I haven't listed...to be able to pick and choose the songs that suit whatever singer I end up with best. Of course...it might never happen -
Are you the guy who's hiring and wants the rest of the band to learn 200 songs straight away then? That list confirmed what i thought, for every song I quite like and wouldn't mind playing there are at least 4 or 5 that not only wouldn't I want to play but not that bothered if I never even hear the original versions again either. I think it was because 'classic rock' (though the term wasn't around then)got a new lease of life in the early 80's with NWOBHM and spin offs of great 70's bands (eg Gillan, Whiesnake and Rainbow from the remnants of Deep Purple)and charted both at album and singles level so the electronica just passed my by mostly. Some acts such as Pretenders, Jam etc were OK but most of the others seemed no more than the worst 'bubblegum' music of the 60's.
What? No As I said previously my concept is to stick to the number ones. That list has 60 songs on it. Well it's all personal taste and I wouldn't knock anyone for liking a particular type of music. I for one could go my entire life without hearing another "classic rock" song I loved that stuff when I was a kid...but that was a long, long time ago I think it's the leather trouser wearing, rock god posturing that goes with as much as anything I just like my music to be fun
I have recently joined an 80s band and had some strong misgivings about the cheesier side of the tracks that had been selected before I teamed up with them. 2 gigs on and I am really getting into the spirit of it - we really went down well and people kept saying how refreshing it was to hear something different (not many 80s bands in SE Essex, it seems). But, yes, as well as the cheese there was some quality stuff from that era - Tears For Fears, Simple Minds, Spandau ballet, Hall and Oates, INXS, plus all the hair rock/power ballads - Foreigner, Starship, Journey, Toto etc. I've even started to enjoy playing 'Eye Of The Tiger' - heaven help me. I guess there is no cure once that has happened.
I was surprised how many bands didn't actually make it to number one. I would love to stick to the number one only concept for the convenience of it but I imagine I would need to throw in some Go West etc. -
Actually I find most 80's pop music risible (I did when it was in the charts in the first place) but I see the opportunities from a business point of view
To be honest I was listening to Iron Maiden at the time so I HATED most 80's songs But I guess going back and listening to it now I can appreciate it much more. The other night I took a list of all the number ones from the 80's, removed the novelty songs and the most cringeworthy ones. Then I chose what I felt were the "best" songs by artists with multiple number ones. I ended up with a list of 60 songs that are in fact pretty decent. The Jam, The Police, David Bowie and Blondie all had number ones. Of course the expected bands were there...Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran etc. Some nice surprises too...Yazz and Chaka Khan. Turned out to be a pretty good set list
