It's more of a research kinda thing. I work for a site called showmehowtoplay.com and we're wrying to find named bass players to do masterclasses etc... Who (UK wise) would you like to see? I've got quite a short list... If you tell me who they are and who they play/played with or if they're just session dudes i'd be very grateful! Thank u kindly!!!
Hiya, I bought a Maplins power bank thingy http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criter...rce=15&SD=Y To escape the tyranny of batteries. However the cables it comes with are ridiculously short and have angled jacks, and don't suit some of my effects. Does anyone know where I can buy some replacement power connectors? I've looked around on the maplins website and they seem to only sell 1m long ones, which is a bit like overkill. Before anyone suggests it, I'm sh*t with soldering irons, so that option is out.
Simon, if you get stuck just get the plugs you need and I'll solder them up for you. Gees (Mill Road) have a big selection. One thing you need to be careful of though, make sure all the pedals are - ground or + ground otherwise you might create a short circuit. Won't harm the pedals, but might pop a fuse in the Maplin unit.
There is a band called Fourplay, of course - a jazz supergroup, featuring Nathan East, Bob James and Larry Carlton.
And who could ever forget The Four Skins (answer: just about everybody)
Don't see why not - if I understand the technique correctly, the key is the other (fretting) hand, the muting and unmuting of the right strings at the right time. If you get good enough at it, you might be able to produce notes so short, you can't tell what note it is.
What is sweep picking?

How may Basses do we own collectively on Basschat?
ooooooh...ga gas gas....+ 20 im embarrased. 525
TWENTY???!!! Do you play them all? I felt bad having seven and only playing 2 or 3. I guess if you're recording regularly it's worth having as many sounds as possible to choose from but who wants to take more than 2 basses to a gig (unless you have slaves/roadies :-)? edit: that wasn't meant to be snide :-) -
Hi all Probably a stupid question, but I was hoping someone could explain to me the difference (benefit or otherwise) of closed versus open headphones. Also appreciated would be any recommendations for <£30 headphones that suit that down low vibe : ) Cheers
I too would be glad to hear if there's such a thing as <£30 cans that don't rattle with bass. Anything in-ear?

It'd have to sound mighty fine, and play itself, to compensate for the way it looks. IMHO.
thinking of buying a fretless but can't decide on passive or active, what do ya reckon chaps ? i only have a budget of about £400. btw any one fancy doing a deal with my black Jaguar ?
Spend the money on a passive and add active electronics later if you find you need them.
The P/J is common, and so is J/MM. Have you guys ever seen a P/MM? What do you think it would be good for? I'm planning on getting some new pickups at Xmas for my MIJ jazz, and I've been tempted by the talk surrounding Wizard. Would a P/MM combo be an insane switchup from J/J?
It'd be very versatile but look wrong. Do it!
Chris I think this diagram is what you are looking for. It used to be public on the Fender web site but seems to have been removed since I printed my copy. When I was building mine I found another version which had 220K mixing resistors on the output side of each pot. It's a useful addition as it should prevent any interaction between the pick-ups.
The problem with the mixing resistors is that unless you use a very short cable, or one with very low capacitance, they will take a lot of top end off. In othr words, it'll always sound as if both volume controls are at half. Unless you put a preamp between them and the jack...
It's a great fuzz, but you must use a high impedance signal into it
so if you're using an active bass, would it work to stick 220k - 1M in series with the input?
-
yeah, that's Matlock on "Anarchy". Steve Jones played the rest of the bass on Never mind the Blx.
Is it true that Chris Spedding played the guitar? Great sounding record.
Wouldn't it have a stereo jack anyway, being an active circuit?
If it's like the EMG system, yes. The sleeve is connected to the battery -v and is shorted to ground when a mono jack is inserted. To make an EMG work like Ebs suggests you'd need to remove the battery and reconnect the sleeve to where the battery +v was. Not all active basses work that way though. Some use switched contacts in the socket that aren't connected to the outside world, ie a switch that's activated by the action of putting a (mono) plug in the (mono) socket.
-
Replace the jack socket on your bass with a stereo jack and wire one of the stereo pair to the input on the preamp. On the other end of the cable, put one into the amp, one on to an 18v feed. Job done, you won't need to be scared again.
+1 just make sure you always have a spare stereo lead though; you won't be able to borrow one like you can an ordinary lead.
Now there's a bassist - good call! Surely one for the underrated thread?
I think someone did nominate him for Big New Prinz. What about Middle Class Revolt - not their most celebrated album but the bass playing throughout (Behind the Counter! M5! Junk Man!) is solider than a solid thing. Sorry, fresh out of similes today.
Personally the only disadvantages I find with the 5 is that they take a little while to adjust to after a 4, weigh a little more, can be a little harder to slap, and you occasionally come across some anti 5 string prejudice (yawn).
I'll stick with it. I don't expect the 'right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing' effect to last forever, but I do like to spank my 4 string hard and don't know if I'll ever be able to do that with all those strings so close together! And yes, my 4 string is so light, like a violin. anti 5 string prejudice? Yawn indeed. :-)
