Warning.... Kappalite 3015 NOT designed for Bass!
bremen replied to skidder652003's topic in Amps and Cabs
I put a 3015lf in a 70 litre box and haven't killed it yet with a 400W amp. I added a 4th order 30Hz hpf when I noticed how much palm muting made the cone move. I can't remember the port tuning frequency but I can check if anyone wants to know. -
I'm very sceptical about that, maybe if the neck was made of plasticine...
-
I think an earlier comment referenced that tilt screw, and the users who neglected to slacken the bolts before tweaking it. My 70s P boasted a shim, and like you say it wasn't a tapered wedge, just a lump at the end of the pocket. There was about half a metric inch space between the edges of the heel and the pocket, another key indicator of Quality.

Speaking as the op, I did measure them with mitutoyu vernier calipers and they definitely weren't tapered. The seller refunded me without requesting I return them.

This needs to be pinned. -
Thomann delivered... So which ones first! Edit: the Lo Riders on the Jazz. Highly delightful fingerstyle (predictive texts insists on finger Tyler there, whoever he is) and super aggressive with a pick. But this is all about longevity, let's see what they're like after a bit of abuse.

What a likeable engineer. So that relatively small reservoir capacitance wasn't just cheapskating.

Thanks Ruarl. That makes sense, but rail sticking is generally something you'd be very careful not to allow, early in the design...as crucial as preventing overheating really. I suspect a lot of power amp stages in bass amps are just lifted from existing amps. The Trace mosfet is almost exactly the Hitachi design note (and a DIY project offered by Maplin), bloody good one though. The one I built could not be destroyed with conventional weapons. The GK does seem quite unusual. I'll ask my geekmates what they make of it.

It's 100% agreed here that there's nothing to be gained by micing the port. So I guarantee that sometime soon, some "renegade" producer is going to be questioned about how he gets his awesome bass sound and he says: -they said it couldn't be done, but rules are just there to be broken.... I'm going to have to try it now 😀

How's it going Beedie Boy, still a Jazz or have you swung back to P?

Flea's sock had a schlong in it, and he got a great tone.

Speaking as a qualified Pat test engineer (pat test as in pin number), I suggest you do this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125336892037?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=coHYpnN-SeO&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=hNc7PDPYRJi&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY and if you're feeling saucy ask to see the venue's most recent installation inspection certificate 😉

Curious as an endangered cat, I had a look at the schematic in search of clues. First glance it looks not unusual but look at the power amp input stage: I have no idea what's going on there, never seen anything like it. And it's got half the reservoir capacitance you usually see for that power of amp (and only the usual rail voltage) Has it a very big power transformer? There's some magic going on there... It's not classA, by the way, class AB. Class A amps are hilariously inefficient; an amp stuffing 200w into a speaker would burn 2kW in heat. Get me, what a geek. Sorry. Been up to my ears in solder fumes all day and it's done something to my brain...

Heatshrink (or "heartstrings" as predictive text would have it) is right up there with wd40 and gaffer tape. -
Series is a huge level and pretty boomy. Parallel is scooped. Individual sounds most natural to me, more like a p. But writing about sound is like dancing about architecture so take that with a pinch of salt.
-
I can't comment on cap value, but I've done a 4 way switch and can confirm that series is way different from the others, but there is an appreciable difference between parallel and either of the singles (and a slight but definite difference between the two singles). I actually prefer the singles, though the humbucking effect of series or parallel is useful.

Another satisfied customer here, got a set of Jazz pickups packed carefully and posted swiftly.

Not sure where to post this... I've just built a sansamp clone. It works. I have a couple of spare boards, free to good homes. You'll need to be OK with surface mount, but nothing too tiny; passives are mostly 0805 with a few 0603. I got the pots from Tayda and most everything else from Mouser. Can provide full documentation and a reasonable amount of hand-holding.
