1. Being old, I have a huge sprawling spouse-hostile sound system and prefer playing records to CDs. But I'd rather listen to a decent bitrate MP3 through nice amp/speakers than vinyl or tape through mediocre amp/speakers.
2. No, non-electrolytic capacitors can go either way (ooer missus, fnarr fnarr etc)
3. Ah, bit too shallow for me (I should have read the small print...) have a BUMP!
4. Mine doesn't like being near magnetic fields - I have it in a rack with an amp using an old-skool non-toroidal transformer and no amount of insulation on the ears or transformer isolation on the output helps. Only distance lends enchantment. I don't see how the state of a building's electrics could have an effect though, Walker...? Maybe your practice room is a louder environment than your house so you notice the hum more.
5.
McCartney and... McCartney.
Balls. McCartney wasn't even the best bass player in the Beatles.
6. If Kevin takes just the amp, I'm interested in just the case (if it's deep enough, TBC...).
7. Google 'Rockinbetter RG4003' and there are plenty of pics and reviews. Andy's right; yes it's crazy. I'm almost tempted just because it's forbidden fruit.
8. [clicks LIKE button] particularly the 'sickly bollocks' which instantly brought to mind a certain nostalgic thread right here on AssHat
9. We have a gig New Year's Eve in St Ives...only the singer is ill, so we've had to cancel. Last minute, I know, but anyone need a gig? It's a social club, an older crowd; they'll probably enjoy 60s/70s covers, Rock 'n' Roll, Motown, you know. I've played there before and they're a happy audience. If not a band, a DJ would be better than nothing. Or an Elvis tribute. It's no-one's fault that we've had to cancel but I'd really like to offer the club an alternative rather than just cancel and leave the hall empty. Thanks!
10.
Oh yes, how very true! I particularly like Bill Hicks' take on this subject... :-))
I don't take drugs any more...than the average touring funk band
11.
Most of your favourite music (and art in general) was probably created by people on drugs - just a thought
A troublesome thought indeed. I was going to bang on a bit about Zappa's zero-tolerance policy to drugs in his bands, then I remembered he lived on cigarettes and coffee (referring to them as 'my food') I gave up dope years ago and my playing got a lot better, just because the drug wasn't there to make everything sound good so I had to try a bit harder. About half my record collection also became unlistenable at this point. Most of the bands I've been in that I really liked collapsed because of drugs one way or another.
12. If it's from the Affinity range (small enclosed tuners) it's not that great a bargain. Otherwise, if the neck's good, I'd buy it.
13.
it's a spoof, tell me it's a spoof...
I really couldn't tell either...either that or a tax on the rich and gullible.
14.
Well there you go I think the mag on the Aria spools the look so I would take it off If I did not use it too, do you think the Aria is worth upgrading to from the Stagg or would you go up to something like a used Yamaha instead?
Yeah, it really looks like an afterthought doesn't it. I love the Aria, been recording it this past week and there's times it really sounds like a DB. A badly played DB mind...it's definitely a better instrument than I am a player. The Stagg has its own sound that is neither DB nor fretless, got lots of comments when I played it live about how 'big' it sounds.
15.
A quick Q: I assume the Stagg just has a piezo pickup in the bridge? The Aria I had a go on had both magnetic and piezo pickups, the mag one sounding much better.
Stagg is piezo only, yes. I also have an Aria and personally I much prefer the piezo, so much that I'll probably remove the mag.
16.
I think I would need a double bass, don't think they had invented the bass guitar in 1958!
They had - and done it so well it's yet to be improved on (mm, controversial ) Connie Francis was rocking our parents' worlds with something called 'Carolina Moon' when you and I first played air bass.
17.
yes i will have it thanks
f*** off! I saw it first!
18. I have an Ashdown dual compressor, boxed, 40 quid and it's yours
19. Jonny Gee is a nice bloke and a great player - you did well to fill his shoes. Respect!
20.
Cool how are you finding the EUB? are the strings rubbish, does it rattle, does the nut need filing down a bit? Plenty of questions Can you play it or are you a novice like me? I say novice mine is not even here yet so I am a minus novice really
The strings aren't awful considering they go for 20 quid, and are fine to get started on. The end pin is prone to rattling but is easily fixed with a bit of shrink-wrap and/or foam. I got mine second-hand and the nut had been filed down. It's surprisingly easy to play if you've played a bit of bass guitar or fretless, not that painful, but I've a long way to go before I'm consistently in tune!
21. I love a happy story. http://www.andyviccarscustom.co.uk/catalog.php
22. Few years ago in the days when I enjoyed prancing like a tit whilst on stage, fell flat on my face, splitting my trousers and breaking the jack off at the surface of the scratchplate. Support band's bassist handed me his bass; by the end of the following song our roady had dismantled my bass, fished out the bits of plug, put it back together, tuned it and hung it round my neck. God bless you Rod McKay fae Leith, wherever you are now (didn't bother repairing the trousers)
23.
+1 I'm afraid. Also,
"Jimmy Page was 21 when he wrote 'Stairway to Heaven', I could play it when I was 18 - I think that says a lot..."
Is lifted from somewhere- possibly Spinal Tap
The Comic Strip's wonderful 'Bad News' actually.
24. Give the guy a break, he was just having a moan about an annoying bloke at a gig and he did say he felt better for it.
