1. Is it just me that has no idea what this is about (apart from the Bilbo's-favourite-tune reference :-) ?
 2.
No. I'm as thick as two planks ..... I have no idea what you are talking about. In the meantime, here's a pic of another bass mandolin for self-important people. Sorry if it's not in black.
I don't find that arrangement of 8 strings objectionable, and I'm normally very much a 4-string-Sunburst-Precision-tuned-EADG sort of chap. Probably because you can play it like a 4 string, just sounds noisier.
 3. Apologies, no offence intended, it was Mr Eliott's statement I was robustly addressing. The rest of your post, above, I have no argument with and it matches my experience. Neither of us appears to have blown speakers with underpowering.
 4.
"As noted, for power amplifiers used to drive a transformer, the DC component is even more of a problem. A typical transformer for these applications may have a primary resistance of well under 1 ohm, so even a small DC level will cause a very high current to flow. This will cause transformer saturation and possibly amplifier failure."
This is apalling horseshit, as we electrical engineers say. Valve amps with transformer outputs are exactly what 99% of guitarists use, and 99% of that 99% regularly drive them well into clipping 99% of the time.
 5. 'Tacsi' - this is a Welsh nod to Sly&Robbie yes? Nice!
 6.
Do you need planning permission to take it out the house?
Does anyone that owns these things ever take them out of the bedroom?
 7.
This. starts about 3 minutes.
What song was the bass player playing along to in that solo?
 8.
There is one. It's called Rubber Shirt.
I see what you did there ;-) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenochrony
 9. My guts hurt from the retching it's induced.
 10.
It was said to a certain mr Epstein that guitar bands were dead and we know what happened there.
Can we pin this somewhere please
Any good engineer or producer will insist on playback through tiny "car-radio" speakers.
I heard of a studio that has a low power FM transmitter wired to the desk so the customers can sit in their own cars in the car park and hear how it'll sound out in the real world. Though radio stations do their own vandalism to the records they play so maybe not entirely representative.
 12.
FWIW I was unaware there was a suggestion that Bang and Olufsen had a patent on Class D - I just thought they had a tested and economic line that other manufacturers were using in their micro lines for convenience. I've never heard rumours of a monopoly on the technology. They probably have patents on some of their specific discoveries and the like but Class D is used by Power amp makers quite widely so a monopoly seems fanciful! I think the whole process presents a daunting task to a hobbyist starting from scratch. I think I've seen a schematic (or part of one) for an Ampeg preamp . . . it's not a straightforward design at all to me, effectively a lay person/ novice hobbyist.
I wasn't suggesting it was you who spread the rumour Quite possibly someone heard that they were selling OEM modules and concluded that they were patented. No matter. The SVP schematic is particularly hard to follow as it shows all the valves on a separate board...I've redrawn it to try and understand it and it's still pretty complex.
 13. Doesn't really apply to bass or guitar speakers. It's important for hifi or PA speakers though. The LF speakers are designed to take more power as there's more LF energy than HF in a musical signal. Clipping creates high levels of HF that the HF drivers just can't take. A single speaker can deal with a square wave just as easily as a sine (at the same power).
 14.
Bassists - they want the moon on a stick.
And they want it in E.
 15.
Thank Sam,) I love predictive text(not) ... Fretless? Not sure about that. Bear in mind , thhe feel of an 8 string is weird and odd to start with.)
Non! Rien de rien! Non, je ne ne defrette rien!
 16. What Beer said. http://connexelectronic.com www.diyaudio.com I've already got the Connex SMPS and class-D modules and the bits (including ancient Mullard valves) for an Alembic-a-like pre. I will use a resistive divider, clamping diodes and a high input impedance opamp buffer between pre and active crossover, then the power stages. I have a schematic for the Ampeg SVP; it's do-able, and happily drives solid state power amps, but is very complicated compared to the Fender/Alembic and uses a multi-tapped inductor you'd have to wind yourself (unless you could find discrete inductors of the appropriate values). That Bang and Olufsen have a patent on Class D and are the only manufacturers of modules is an urban myth that was repeated on another thread.
 17. it works, this is most excellent. I shall introduce it to my musicians right away. sombreros aloft! :-)
 18.
something has gone a bi pete tong lol, i wil have it fixed before tonight its some WEIRD error that i cant get to the bottom of since the last upgrade i put on the market last night. Ill tell you when its done.
Great stuff, many thanks.
 19. Rotosound round-wound, which are also probably the most commonly stocked strings in the UK...long scale anyway, 32" might be abit more obscure.
 20.
He'll be converting five-string basses into four-strings next.
'This bass clearly suffered some setup problems from the factory, in that they'd fitted five strings instead of four. I tweezed the middle string a microsnip and reseated the remaining four equidistant. I removed the superfluous tuning peg and filled the hole in the headstock with cheese...' I like him. He's the opposite of the scammers who pass off cheapo copies as expensive instruments, or sell off anonymous crap they found in their gran's attic. At least he describes what he instrument is and was, and what he's done to it - and we get a good laugh out of it, rather than a feeling of righteous indignation.
 21. Installed on my HTC Desire. 'Sorry! The appliction BPM Live (process com.zealous.bpm.live) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again' Happens immediately after clicking the crossed-drumsticks icon.
 22. sorry, I've not been keeping up with this. the click reduction, should it prove necessary, is a 1uF film cap in series with each preamp output, then a 1 Meg resistor to ground from the switch end of each cap. this makes sure that any dc offset on the output of a preamp is eliminated.
