1. Guess so. I had a Precision that had more dead spots than [insert bad taste metaphor]; a local luthier scraped the fingerboard, charged me 60 quid and it's been perfect ever since.
 2. I didn't play bass at all for about 10 years for those reasons.
 3.
Bill's post above suggests that Eminence Xmax figures are one way peak figures. WinISD uses the same format, so it would be entered as-is. Lots of cabinets have surprisingly low handling in the low fundamental range, but are still usable for many of us because the fundamental of our lowest notes is a small proportion of the total signal. Many drivers also have usable output beyond the quoted Xmax.
Trace 4 by 10s use Beta 10s, am I right?
 4. I modelled a 2by10 using Eminence Beta 10A in WinISD and however big or small I made the cab, however I tuned it, the power handling dropped to 20-40W between resonance and 100Hz. Should I have doubled their stated Xmax figure, or are they really this crap? Or is WinISD very pessimistic?
 5. If the pots are the same values as the EBMM, you'll need to replace them. Or have Mr KiOgon do it for you. http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/TOWN8019/MyStorage/Pre-Amp%20Page%20Pics/N_SR4._Newer_3EQ.jpg
 6. Yes, you certainly could do that. The number of combinations would be enormous (someone will be along with a figure any minute now...). I have a MM pickup wired coil1/coil2/series/parallel and the tones are very distinct. If you definitely don't want series wiring why not try a mini switch for each coil, not necessarily permanently fixed into the instrument, note which combinations are useful then decide on a more permanent way of selecting them? Once you've worked out the ones that work, there are plenty folk here who'd be able to suggest switching options.
 7.
My head is mashed and my fingers are ripped to ribbons.
I love that feeling.
 8. I was asked, after Saturday's gig, what I detuned my 4 string Precision to. EADG. Not sure what that proves (apart from a suspicion that I enjoy dragging conversations OT and should get my coat).
 9.
I thought that volume pots are usually log, and that treble/bass controls were linear, like this one: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2c6491bf72 But please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as I'm no expert! Out of interest, what are you fitting it to?
I've bought from this seller before, no problems.
 10. haha, yes many a time our first set has been sh*t hot then the guitarist has had a pint or nine before the second set...
 11.
For £50 they could buy approximately one rehearsal from me and I would expect Potnoodle and Wagon Wheels to be provided free of charge.
Same here but if I was local, unemployed and between bands I'd probably consider it. Beats watching TV in my pants.
 12.
. Is there an Android app that I could use for recording?
Voice Recorder. The mic in my HTC Desire craps out at high volumes but is useful as a notebook.
 13. I've just realised that Ash was referring to these pots, I thought he meant the mag pickup height adjusters. D'oh! I have Presto Jazzicatos on mine. The softness and flexibility of them is quite delicious compared to the steels it came with.
 14. Got some second hand DB strings from Alex. I've never bought second-hand strings before (never had to as a bass guitarist!) and was a bit wary, but they were perfect. And arrived about 20 minutes after I paid for them, attractively gift-wrapped. So if it's second-hand stuff in perfect nick that you're after, Alex is your man. I've taken to hanging round his kitchen door hoping for some left-over cake, as I'm confident it'll be good as new. Nothing yet, but I'll let you know, gentle reader. :-}
 15. Happy ending. There are a bunch of trimpots on the preamp. Turning two of these up brought the piezo level up without increasing the noise. I can only assume they were set at such a low level in an attempt to balance the piezo and the mag (which is now somewhat weaker than the piezo but that's ok because I dislike it anyway and will probably remove it). It's not perfect, but it's no worse than most active bass guitars. I might have a go at designing a low noise pre, but for now I'm much relieved.
 16.
I had one and had no issue with either the piezo or the mag. There were small adjusters on mine (like recessed plastic grub screws) which could be used for adjusting individual gain and tonal response on each pickup, may be worth having a play around with. Good luck it's a lovely EUB
Cheers, that's encouraging. Hopefully it's a faulty unit rather than poor design. I don't like the mag sound as much as the piezo, and yes the mags do need adjusting for an even response. What strings did you use?
 17. Just got a new Aria SWB Lite Bis. It plays beautifully and sounds a lot better than my Stagg apart from one thing - the electronics are noisy. Really noisy. Unusably noisy, much worse than the Stagg. I just about got away with it live but it's certainly not good enough to record (and pretty unpleasant practising on headphones). Not only is there a constant white noise that doesn't completely disappear with the volume controls down, but there's high frequency oscillation depending on the positions of the tone controls. Of course, the treble can't be turned above half way without increasing the noise to seriously unbearable levels. Has anyone here owned or tried an SWB? Have I got a faulty instrument or is it a design problem? If I hadn't bought it on the web and waited 2 weeks for delivery it'd be back in the shop by now. Serves me right for not supporting my local music shop I guess.
 18.
Mine is when i get home and my GF says "hi, i thought i would wait up for you". Gets me every time :-(
How is that a downer?
 19.
the J is a single coil and the P is effectively a humbucker. So with both on, one coil of the P pickup is getting reinforced while the other is not, resulting in an imperfect setup.
Not true; yes, the P is a humbucker but the polarity of the magnets is reversed between the two halves so although the coils cancel hum from an external source, the currents generated by the vibrating strings are in phase. I learned this the hard way when I acquired a P pickup that didn't have the reversed magnets; works fine as a P but when the original owner tried it in his PJ he experienced the effect that the E and A were in phase with the J pickup, the D and G were out and consequently cancelled. A properly wired PJ works absolutely fine (there's a midrange scoop on mine as expected, but plenty of bass with both P and J on full). Anyway, :
Cheers guys, that sorted it.
20.
Which can be a problem at times, and just shows that nobody is immune!
"2112 gone wrong"? I'd pay good money to be able to recover seamlessly from such a mistake like Rush did. The uploader obviously never played live
 21. When I noticed Bilbo had joined the thread I assumed the story was going to be: -A gorgeous young lady came up to me after the gig and said 'that was great! Just like the bass on Moondance'
