1. I play with a drummer who is terrible at taking a compliment. I'll say 'you really nailed that, nice feel' and he'll say 'I'm not happy with the snare' or 'my pedal isn't right' or 'these cymbals sound wrong for this style'. He can't take constructive criticism either. 'Why not try that with a hi-hat rather than a ride' is interpreted as 'I'm the greatest bass player in the world, and your breath smells', hence my attempts to praise him up when he gets it right. Shame, because when he does get it right he's really good.
 2.
It's misleading though - I thought you're supposed to plug into lo if you have a normal passive bass right? I think most people think 'Hi' will be louder (ie higher), but actually the lo input is louder. I could be wrong. I always thought it was: lo = use if your bass has a low output (ie passive) hi = use if your bass/instrument has a high output (ie active or a keyboard with line level output etc) non?
Does it really matter? Use the one that sounds better! You won't damage the amp by over-driving the input stages. Also, what Mr Tobeloud said. My EMG-P active isn't noticeably louder than my Seymour Duncan passive.
 3. I made a box to protect my bike on planes using this stuff: http://www.theplasticpeople.co.uk/correx-sheet-white-4mm-x-2440mm-x-1220mm-p-130.html?utm_campaign=google-product-search-us-en&utm_medium=product_search&utm_source=google-product-search-us-en it's like the stuff that estate agents use for their signs. It's survived many flights. Be even tougher if you used two thicknesses with the corrugations running perpendicular. It cuts easily and is a lot lighter than plywood, so maybe something to consider as a halfway between soft bags and full flight cases?
 4.
Great info. Did you just use normal plastic shopping bags?
How about those heavy rubble sacks, bit tougher.
 5. There was grumpiness and misery in that thread? Damn! I was looking for some grumpiness and misery. Missed my chance.
 6. I am strangely drawn to it too...must resist...
 7.
Insulation melts, shorts, catches fire, sets other stuff on fire and burns down your house, the short kills your output devices, shorting them putting full rail voltage into your speakers, melting them and setting them on fire too. That's probably the worst directly.
Nobody panic! He's talking about using instrument cables for speaker outputs, not for connecting his amp to the mains. Worst that's likely to happen is that he'd pop the fuses and/or damage the amp, and that's pretty unlikely unless he's running a kilowatt or two into a low impedance load. If the worst doesn't happen, all he'll lose is a bit of power and reliability. Not that I'm suggesting using the wrong cable, but if I forgot to pack my speaker cable at a gig I wouldn't be too concerned at using an offered instrument lead.
 8. Live at Leeds. and Dave and Ansel Collins' Double Barrel.
 9. yes I can see how you'd do that. just needs a spdt toggle switch, only problem I can see is that you'd get a pretty terrifying bang when switching over. not something you need mid song. pm me if you want to try it though.
 10.
To put this another way, my 74 Jazz has 74 strings.
That's not a bass. It's a piano.
 11. I'll do it if you like (no moolah required). PM me.
 12.
Need more cowbell
LOL, hadn't seen that before
 13.
Me too, and those who use it are inevitably incapable of 'rocking', whether 'up' or in any other direction.
Similarly, when you hear someone say 'let's do a ska version of...' ...you know they don't know ska from catarrh.
 14.
Hello mate, good to hear from you. I've used the Silvers which according to Clarky are the same thing. I only had a Stagg for about a week and didn't like it very much so may not be the best person to advise, but I don't think they would be my string of choice for an EUB; I get quite a lot of finger noise from them, they tend to need a high action to play anything but slap (as in my experience - and with my fairly crude technique - they can be quite rattly at low action), and they're very low tension. I used to go for the opposite on my old EUB (Yamaha SLB) as it just sounded muddy with guts or similar. They also don't work with a mag PUP? In short I wouldn't file the nut unless someone else here gives you the confidence to do so. Hope I haven't pissed on your barbecue mate, and hope all's well C
Cheers Chris, I knew you had a Stagg at some point but didn't know you didn't like it. They do seem a bit Marmite; as my first upright it's been great fun for me and the band but as I have nothing to compare it with I don't know how much it can be improved. I just guessed from the fact that decent strings are 75+ quid that they might have made savings on a cheap instrument by fitting less than excellent ones. Life as a bass guitarist was so simple... My barbecue remains aflame, thank you for asking, and lang may yer ain lum reek.
 15.
I think the thread has gone slightly sidewise... yes, there are worse singers out there, bands which are less tight and so on - my point was just the abnoxious slap bass playing that is completely inappropriate for the tune.
Yeah, just listened to the performance in the original post and it's horrid. I hate that genre anyway though, spent most of the 80s trying to avoid it. For a while you weren't a 'real' bass player if you didn't play like that.
 16.
He's not bad to be fair, nice Bass too.
I was disappointed that it was no worse than mediocre, to be honest, having approached it with the sort of delicious fear one feels when going to see a splatter movie with a fierce reputation. You guys have had very sheltered lives if you haven't heard much worse than that!
 17. Threadjack warning Chris, have you used these strings before? How do they compare with the stock strings on the Stagg? Reason I ask is that Daf has very kindly lent me a set, but I'm going to have to file the nut on the Stagg to try them. So unless I'm confident that they're an improvement it's a bit of a risk. Any thoughts?
 18. They vary a lot and asking prices can be stupid for a very poor instrument just because it's old. On the other hand, a mid-priced instrument can usually be sold on for what you paid for it if you don't like it, so long as it's not got a knackered truss rod. Personally I'd never buy unseen from Ebay but I would from a Basschatter.
 19. I don't care. Every post from EBS is a moment of joy in an otherwise putrid modern hell, just so long as he doesn't change his avatar.
 20.
... or you could close your Facebook account - it's like banning the whole of Facebook from your life. I highly recommend it.
Worked for me. I got sick of being offered free lunches and warnings about the dangers of microwave ovens.
 21. What Silddx said. If you stick with the band, put your pride aside and play supportively (read: like a bass player, not a virtuoso) you'll get a lot of respect for it. You certainly shouldn't feel like you've failed if they still want you - they still believe you can come up with the necessary, even if you didn't do it on that particular session. Insist on playing the interesting stuff and you'll be 'we had to sack him because he just wanted to show off'.
 22.
As to running a head as a sort of DI box, why not? I've used mine at home for recording with no cab plugged in, and used it on a couple of gigs with no cab connected and it was fine. What can happen to them? Mine's an Aguilar ag500 sc mind. Dan
Run a valve amp without a load and you'll destroy the output valves and maybe the transformer. Very expensive toast. Solid state amps are generally ok into no load.
 23.
go on, try a bit of dirt, you'll never go back!
Got an SVP preamp for that :-)
