I'd really like to try a set, subject to your agreeing there's a possibility that they'd be right for me. I'm new to EUB, playing a Stagg. I also play fretless bg and would like a sound more like an upright than fretless. I don't slap. The sound closest to what I'm after (and I know this might be a big ask from a cheap electric and a novice) is Greg Cohen's playing on Tom Wait's stuff such as Step Right Up and A Soldier's Things. [/quote] A lot of FOH engineers like to mic up the bass cab to get some dirt into that very clean tone though, in which case it's worth using a valve amp if you want that gritty sound.

I'd start by splitting the signal thus: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linkwitz–Riley_filter then applying the effect to the hpf path. the outputs of the effect and the lpf could then be summed (you may or may not need to invert the phase of one path depending on the particular effect) or, better, bi-amped. For component-level crossover designs, check Rod Elliot's excellent site. sound.westhost.com/project09.htm Whether you get the effect to work the way you want or not, active crossover and bi-amping can get great results. I use a 800Hz crossover and feed the lows to a 15" and the highs to a 6".

Rumour I heard right here on Basschat was that a lot of that classic unmistakeable Rickenbacker sound he got was actually from a Jazz.

Welcome John. If you like groundwound on your fretless (and I do) there's no reason not to use them on your 'ordinary' bass, unless you specifically want a zingy clangy sound. For what it's worth I love the feel and sound of D'Addario Chromes (flatwound) on my fretted Precision. welcome to BC

I had a 79 fretless, was wide but very shallow from front to back, is this like your mate's? closest I've found is a crafted-in-japan; others have been slightly deeper. you could try Warmoth, they now do a choice of depths in a wide selection of materials. quality is excellent.

odd...I had a rockit that I got rid of because it was hissy and pissy. I got an amplug and while it doesn't sound as good as an amp its quite good enough for practising. not had to turn it all the way up. using it with passive Precision and active (emg-p) Warmoth fretless fwiw.

[/quote] I've had many, many dealings with them without problems, but this may be their Achilles' heel. Problem is that microphone may be in stock when you add it to your basket but they sell such a volume of stuff that by the time they come to pick it and post it, someone else has snapped up the last dozen. They've been very good at sorting issues. I had an amp develop a fault within a year; they arranged for its collection, and I had a replacement days later.
