COuld I just buy a head, plug my bass in and take the line out into the mixing desk? For tonal purposes.
No! You could buy an SVP preamp though, works for me. There's one for sale here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/177422-ampeg-svp-pro-preamp-for-sale/page__p__1670173__hl__svp__fromsearch__1#entry1670173

I have a good bass and I have a good amp... Why do I need a pedal?
bremen replied to bassickman's topic in Effects
lol, how many times will people ask this. What is "need" in music anyway? You need a pedal to tune up.
I like a tiny bit of octabass on a fretless, haven't felt the need for much else. -
I'd really like to try a set, subject to your agreeing there's a possibility that they'd be right for me. I'm new to EUB, playing a Stagg. I also play fretless bg and would like a sound more like an upright than fretless. I don't slap. The sound closest to what I'm after (and I know this might be a big ask from a cheap electric and a novice) is Greg Cohen's playing on Tom Wait's stuff such as Step Right Up and A Soldier's Things. Thanks!

metal core slap strings? jazzicato vs slaphappy weedwackers
bremen replied to BassInMyFace's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I'm currently trying out a set of weedwhackers synthetic gut strings and I must say I'm impressed so far. They play like a good set of guts but without all the string care and maintenance of the real ones, and, boy are they easy on the fingers or what!!!! They seem to be equally good whether played pizza or Arco and stay in tune. You can get 'em on eBay for about £45 Inc p & p. So if any else is tempted I'd be interested in how you find them.
I'm very tempted but can't find them on ebay -
Reminds me of the T shirt I saw once: When God Created Black Women...She Was Only Showing Off being worn by someone so beautiful I doubted Darwin for about five minutes.
From very early days bass players have been using DI’s, which completely bypass the amp and speakers, so being valveless works very well for bass. There are no valves in PA systems and the bass that they produce is usually of a higher quality than most bass rigs. IMO valves are overrated for bass.
A lot of FOH engineers like to mic up the bass cab to get some dirt into that very clean tone though, in which case it's worth using a valve amp if you want that gritty sound.

I'd start by splitting the signal thus: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linkwitz–Riley_filter then applying the effect to the hpf path. the outputs of the effect and the lpf could then be summed (you may or may not need to invert the phase of one path depending on the particular effect) or, better, bi-amped. For component-level crossover designs, check Rod Elliot's excellent site. sound.westhost.com/project09.htm Whether you get the effect to work the way you want or not, active crossover and bi-amping can get great results. I use a 800Hz crossover and feed the lows to a 15" and the highs to a 6".

Rumour I heard right here on Basschat was that a lot of that classic unmistakeable Rickenbacker sound he got was actually from a Jazz.

Welcome John. If you like groundwound on your fretless (and I do) there's no reason not to use them on your 'ordinary' bass, unless you specifically want a zingy clangy sound. For what it's worth I love the feel and sound of D'Addario Chromes (flatwound) on my fretted Precision. welcome to BC
Sorry Bremen, didn`t mean to sound as if I was pulling you up. Jez
no worries, it didn't sound that way - I was conceding that you probably had a more accurate version of What Really Went On.
He was sacked/agreed to leave with a 6 figure payout as him and Rossi no longer agreed on the song choices. Lancaster hated doing all the non rocky stuff that Rossi quite liked doing and was succesfull in the charts. Also the fact that he had moved to Australia didn`t help matters. If you watch the rocking all over the world video, you will see that Lancaster is a puppet as he wouldn`t come back to film the video. He wasn`t best pleased!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn8VYqIlkOU Jez
ok fair enough. I stand corrected.

I had a 79 fretless, was wide but very shallow from front to back, is this like your mate's? closest I've found is a crafted-in-japan; others have been slightly deeper. you could try Warmoth, they now do a choice of depths in a wide selection of materials. quality is excellent.

as I recall, Lancaster got sacked for refusing to play apartheid south Africa. are they now admitting he was right? bit like matlock getting sacked from the pistols for liking the Beatles then getting welcomed back when there was a few quid to be made, imho
I want this, but have no money... Trade for a 1973 Antoria Les Paul Custom AND Epiphone Thunderbird Pro-IV Natural? 2 for 1...!!
You can NOT have a name that contains the word 'Rammstein' and play a girly pink bass. Das ist verboten! Du bist was du isst! -
Well it arrived . Lovely instrument BUT Jesus it feels like I'm fighting it ! Any tips for getting the hang of it ? I'm trying scales and yesterday put the iPod on and played along but even getting through one song without stopping is tough lol !
+1 to taking it easy, and don't worry it's meant to be tough! I'm enjoying the physicality of it. Also, have a play of your bass guitar. You'll be amazed at how easy it is,and you'll get a boost from that. Playing upright will definitely improve your BG playing, so worth it for that alone. Hang on in there!
John Entwistle in My Generation. It's neat, tidy, short and to the point. It fits the number well and is still interesting when it finishes!
+1. nothing since then has been anything other than a fretw***. edit: can't believe I'm not allowed to say "fretw@nk". we all do it, on our basses or on our cocks.

The basses you find nailed to pub walls... What the heck?
bremen replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm not sure i've ever seen a bass nailed to a pub wall before. The idea of nailing a bass to anything is just awful though, it's like burning the Qur'an, pissing on a war memorial or privatising the NHS. I suppose the exception is if you were nailing a bass to the sort of person who goes around nailing basses to things
nice analogies! -
From your replies I begin to suspect that the quality of the gadget is very inconsistent and you guys may have got "good" ones, as BurritoBass says.
in the interests of science and investigative journalism, shall I post mine to you so you can compare?

odd...I had a rockit that I got rid of because it was hissy and pissy. I got an amplug and while it doesn't sound as good as an amp its quite good enough for practising. not had to turn it all the way up. using it with passive Precision and active (emg-p) Warmoth fretless fwiw.
Could you use a bass pod pro xt or a zoom B3 as a modeling pre' with a Yamaha (or similar) power amp to drive your cabs? If its a daft question, forgive me!
I've successfully used the bass pod pro to drive a power amp and cab. Favourite combination was a Hiwatt 200 and Ampeg 8x10, was quite fierce with a Precision.
Don't like 'em. The website says 'in stock' and it isn't really and won't be for weeks. Time wasters.
I've had many, many dealings with them without problems, but this may be their Achilles' heel. Problem is that microphone may be in stock when you add it to your basket but they sell such a volume of stuff that by the time they come to pick it and post it, someone else has snapped up the last dozen. They've been very good at sorting issues. I had an amp develop a fault within a year; they arranged for its collection, and I had a replacement days later.
