More reasonably priced for now! Were these things any good back in the day?
No. They were a poor man's HH (which in turn was a poor man's Ampeg or Fender Bassman)
 2.
Would be interested but I'm a lefty so yours is probably the wrong way round! In my opinion I am THE Mike Batt (the Wombles guy is the imposter) As I normally say to the millions who have made this observation "same name, different bank account". Do you know if they make a hard case for these or do they fit in a "standard" case?
They're symmetrical (apart from the controls). I didn't realise they did a lefty version! Yes, you can get a hard case. They'd rattle round a bit in a standard case. Yes, I am aware that the Wombles guy is merely a tribute act. Respect!
 3.
Has anyone out there owned one of these (I think the model is B2AB). What do you thi nk? Played one in Bass Cellar recently and I'm thinking of buying but not decided. Any views? Cheers
I have one for sale. It has a nice neck pup, very dark. Personally I dislike the bridge pup but others would disagree. It hangs a bit strange, very good access to higher frets but totally different from my beloved Precision. The nut is more like a J width than a P. Great for big bands on small stages. Stays in tune when you whack fellow band members on the back of the head. You're not THE Mike Batt, are you? Not worthy! Not worthy!
 4.
I was reading the thread from the guy that wants to learn Bakithi Kumalo's line on 'You Can Call Me Al' and noted a few people said it was something they had learned/wanted to learn. Having a perverse sense of perspective, my immediate thought was 'why'? We all do it. There is a list of bass lines that seem to be essential learning for bass players; 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick', 'Teen Town', 'Amazing Grace' by Wooten, that thing by Stu Hamm - you know the stuff I am talking about. It's all over YouTube. So we all go learn it and what? We only ever play it to impress people who aren't musicians (if it looks harder than it is) or to impress other musicians (if it is harder than it looks). We waste hours of study time learning a chunk of Stanley Clarke, or a wodge of Les Claypool, a modicum of Mark King or a pinch of Jaco or Flea. We should be studying music not musicians licks. These are just party tricks not core skills. I think its probably fair to say that the kids that don't do these things and focus on the core knowledge are probably going to be better that those that can execute the party pieces but can't really play music. For the record, I haven't learned Kumalo's line but did do Teen Town, Berlin's 'Bach' solo, 5G, Motherlode etc and a couple of bits of Stu Hamm! I am as bad as anytime in this area of wastage but urge developing players not to waste time on juggling and 'play the damn music' Listen to the grooves and don't worry about the fills; they're not important! Jeff Berlin is my guru - just don't make me listen to him playing!
I can't even play Smoke On The Water. How cool am I!
 5.
N.B. IIRC Paul Simonon regretted (after the event) smashing up his 'good' Precision on the iconic London Calling album cover.
Apparently he thought it was a not-so-good bass; didn't realise it was his best bass till it was too late.
 6.
I go pre - if the engineer is a numpty with cloth ears, me eqing the bass before s/he gets the signal is not going to disguise the fact
Very true. The correct answer, of course, is 'both'. A pre-EQ DI and a mic in front of your eq'd, effected, distorted luvverly cab.
 7.
Take a back up fretted.
Bah. I suppose if he'd said he was about to attempt to swim la manche you'd have said 'wear water wings' Fretless pride! Courage!
 8.
+1 I blame the parents
Never was this more true than in the case of Carol Thatcher's recent disgraceful behaviour at the BBC (not you, Sean).
 9.
Since the council have advised the complainant to keep a diary it might be an idea for you to keep a diary too, especially if you think they are complaining about occasions when you haven't been making a noise.
Good point well made.
 10.
So, I concede to upsetting a neigbour and apologise for this but would like to work around the problem and still be able to play without any aggro. Therefore what are reasonable noise levels and times for making the noise so that I could negotiate via the council a way forward rather than just stopping playing at home.
The onus is now on the complainer to keep a diary of when the disturbances occur. The council will then go round and set up a spl meter in their house and sit and wait for the music to start. They will then write to you, and here's your pportunity to discuss when and how loud is reasonable. You won't get a summons unless you ignore them. This is how my city council does things, anyway. Hope this helps.
 11.
That's exactly what I mean by commercialised. It's not about talent, it's about marketability. The quality is dire...unless you really, really dig around. All the bands I liked as a teenager are what I'm still listening to! Purely because there's so little around that can match up it in terms of musicality.
So what's changed since your parents' generation? The bands they liked as teenagers are probably the ones they listen to now, because no music is as exciting as the music you get introduced to as an adolescent. They probably think the stuff you like is lacking in musicality.
Music isn't about talent now, it's about sex/marketing as others said, f***ing depressing. I can't remember the last time I listened to a signed band and got excited by what I heard. Probably 1995. This is a truly crap time for good music, compared to the late 80s/early 90s..
And that was a crap time compared to (in my opinion) 1981. We're showing our respective ages here I'm assuming you're younger than me, of course
 12.
I think she means the sound i commercialised??
Always has been.
 13.
Yeah - as the question goes, is the music scene at an all time low?? Online downloading just seems to have killed off bands making money and even touring bands are not exactly rolling in it. Why are there no new decent bands appearing?? The music scene is SO commercialised now, it's depressing. Any thoughts...am I alone in feeling like this?
I've always hated 99% of what I've heard. All that's changed is that I no longer know where to go to hear the 1%.
 14.
New power supply arrived yesterday. All working fine... Thanks guys.
I love a happy ending
 15.
The do a whole variety of neck sizes, I notice the mostly seem to say 'slim profile' which is not a description of what I want,
If they call their P necks 'slim profile' they're lying. I have two and they are definitely 'thick and round'; same width as Fenders but considerably deeper.
how to describe what I do want would be useful. 'Like one of the cheapest basses you can get' is not ideal.
um?
 16.
I really like the profile of the neck on my Johnson bass, its a lot like a bat, thick and round, I was told its like the old tele bass necks, but I've never had hold of one. Gonna be looking for a new neck similarly chunky but with a little more quality, better fretting and finish etc. Any suggestions?
Warmoth.
 17.
Cheers guys.. one on order!!!
Fingers crossed - you might have toasted the pedal with the AC supply. Hope not, let us know. Check the polarity of the DC supply, ie whether the tip of the plug is + or -. Hopefully it'll be marked on the pedal and adjustable on the supply.
 18.
Please don't answer 'Yes" straight away....... I have just bought an envelope filter to have a play with (Boomstick Bottom Feeder). Simple stuff. Plug it in, connect to the amp and voila!! or so I thought..... When I turn it on it buzzes very loudly through the amp and cuts off the bass! so, thinks I, maybe I have been stupid and connected it wrong, quick switch of the cables, same thing. Bit of Research on the net. Any 9V power supply will do.. I am using a 9V power supply. Anyone know what is wrong is the filter not working properly? I have my doubts about the power supply.
Is it an AC power supply?
 19.
Meh, it worked, it was only an OLP neck.
sure, I was just saying there's nowt wrong with using a nail file!
 20.
I bought these from Maplins ith the intention of buying a Badass bridge, but that never took off. they are cheap enough and do a job. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=3852&C=SO
'1400mm length' 'Please note that, under the Offensive Weapons Act 1996, this product cannot be sold to anyone under the age of 18.' Not surprised, you could have someone's lung out with one of them!
 21.
I had a very small round file that i used for it, but it was only small enough for the E string, i used a nail file for the rest.
If you use a nail file you'll end up with a square profile at the bottom of the slot. You can use an old roundwound string of the appropriate guage as a file to round it off: pull it back and forth like dental floss from hell.
 22.
600W each; one has had about two hours use, the other a bit more. Free cabinet (for one fifteen and a pair of 10s) if you want it http://www.eminence.com/proaudio_speaker_d...mp;SUB_CAT_ID=1 160 quid...I can post the drivers but not the cabinet.
Is it bad netiquette to 'bump' this?
 23.
You can actually get nut files which are basically just needle files,do an internet search on needle files, then its just a case of filing the slots by eye.Just go easy on them.
The difference between nut files and ordinary needle files (apart from a huge price difference) is that nut files aren't tapered, so the slot is the same width from the front to the back of the nut. They also come in sizes to exactly match the strings. Probably not worth the $$$ unless you're going to be doing a lot of setups though, I'm sure plenty folk have got good results from careful use of a small needle file. PM me if you buy a set and want to sell them on though!
 24.
Good luck to you too, Bremen!
Thanks! Really looking forward.
 25.
Thats cool for me as their drummer is bloody amazing and probably the best drummer I have ever played with. He's on another level to what I am used to working with and I hope it will improve my playing along the way.
You lucky, lucky boy. I have an audition tomorrow night. I'm hoping they have a great drummer. If he's good, it doesn't really matter how bad the guitarists are; if he's bad, it doesn't matter how good they are ;-)
