I've just spoken to the seller and he's going to be away for two weeks so I may either have to put this on ice for a while or use a courier. I'll get back in touch if anything changes, but in the meantime, thanks again for the replies and PMs. Greg, this'll be the first of your trips to Cambridge for a while at which we haven't met up
If you need a place for it to rest a few hours/days/weeks in Cambridge, my house is your house.
 2.
I heard he played bass for zappa, am I wrong?
He looks like he ought to have played bass for Zappa.
 3.
Ive gone through 3 bridges on my Squier CVP. The original HM, a Fender (BBOT) vintage and a Gotoh 201. I didn't notice much difference in tone or sustain, but i much prefer the feel of the Gotoh when im resting the side of my hand on it, and i think it looks the best. Good enough reason for me to have done the upgrade IMO.
Yeah I like these. They address the sideways-shifting issue of the bbot, have no sharp edges and don't look too unsubtle.

Yes I know. Not only was he a much better bassist than me, he's a lot funnier. The baxterd.
 5.
I just think there is a big difference to a potential bass player. If I was actually looking for a fully formed band that just needed a bass player I'd be a bit narked to find that it's just another singer/songwriter who reckons they've got it. Thinking you're the next big thing is a piece of piss, actually getting a decent working band together is much more difficult.
Well why don't you just email him and ask him? Give him a break!
 6.
Are you a bass player looking for a band? Or just a pedant looking to make trouble?
Seems clear enough to me. Just lacking information as to location.
 7.
Ahh yes well spotted. Well maybe he doesn't want that any more? We'll have to wait and see until he's next online so he can tell us.
If he doesn't want it, I'll have it. EDIT: No I won't! I have too many basses!
 8.
Nice try you've obviously not read the thread have you?
I read his sig, the OP and put two and two together.
Hi all I have long loved the Jazz bass but really want to get the P bass sound going on, very much like the PJ precision basses I have tried but was wondering is it possible to add a pickup into the bridge pickup position on a Jazz bass that just slots in or would I need to get it routed for a regular P pickup?
Don't butcher a Jazz. 10.
Having used MB heads for a few years with no FX etc i now couldn't (or rather wouldn't like to) gig without my BDDI. I dont use it for any of that Ampeg nonsense, nor for any distortion but it does seem to bring my tone to life with just a small amount on the blend knob. A nicer, deeper low end and some nice sparkle. Seems to work well with MB heads.
Nice demo here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_56iFr402U
 11. I use them on fretless. They're more like rounds than flats in their bahaviour, ie start very bright and quickly settle down, then after a while start to sound a bit lifeless. They don't mash up the board like rounds though, and finger noise is less evident.

Anyway. My basses only seem to go out of tune after they've been in a gig bag and/or suffered extreme temperature changes. Never need tuning mid-gig.

 15.
Hi all. Strictly speaking this isn't bass related, more electronics/amps/speakers. I've recently been able to get my hands on an old Hammond Sounder organ. Apparently it's the worst Hammond ever made - and that makes it more than good enough for me. It was made in the early 70's and doesn't have any sort of line-out/headphone socket, just an internal speaker. Now, how easy/difficult would it be to add a 1/4 inch output socket to this thing (at a level similar to, say, that of a guitar) so that I could hook it into external fx/amps/PCs etc.? Do-able?
I'd buy a cheap DI box and wire it across the volume control. Do-able by anyone with a soldering iron and some basic knowledge of how not to get killed by electricity.

 19. If it only needs the patio doors when you sell, why not build it all of brick, leave a space for the doors and fill it with studwork+acoustic plasterboard+membrane http://www.soundstop.co.uk/solutions/wall_..._solution_3.php then rip it out and replace with glass when you move?
 20.
Can anyone tell me how the various Fender basses rate in order of quality ie Squire, Japanese, Mexican, American etc. I fancy a sunburst/rosewood Precision but already have a good Custom Shop NOS LE Jazz and can't justify spending much money. I see various nice looking, relatively cheap bases around but how would they compare with my Jazz? I don't know how I come to own this as I've been playing for a long time and have only ever owned a Precision. I would trade my Jazz, but it's relatively new and I would lose too much. Can anyone advise as to how low I can go without being disappointed. KEDO
These questions have been asked a few times and the consensus seems to be: try before you buy. There are always stories of Squier being told to reduce their quality because they were embarassing the USA Fenders of the time; of really great Mexican instruments and even better Japanese. I had a 70s USA Precision that you could get a 50p piece in the pocket beside the neck, and now have a Japanese neck that I love more than life itself. They just vary so much.
 21.
You just want this one, but with the single battery replaced by two joined together exactly in the diagram you had above.
That's what I was referring to in my first reply, only I wasn't sure the active pickups would enjoy driving into a dead short (which is what happens when the pot is set to minimum). Assuming the pups in this circuit are similar to the ones Stevie has, that implies they'd also be ok with lower value pots. All good.
 22.
My rig is as follows: Markbass Mini CMD121p Sandberg MM2 That's it! I'm using a Boss TU-2 (Soon to get a Polytune as I prefer it), and use the DI out on the amp. I'm after anything to make my sound "better", so I'm thinking EQ pedal? Compressor? Sonic Stomp? What are your never-leave-home-without pedals?
EBS Octabass. You don't need much of it (though as Mae West probably never said, "too much of a good thing can be wonderful") to give a huge fat sound.
 23.
Well I need it so that I can turn 1 pick up off and keep the other one on so what would you suggest? Also, you say about lowering the pot values, I thought that would be the case to be honest but I want the bass to produce as much high end treble as possible. What do you guys suggest I do? I'll PM you Bremen but cheers to both of you for your answers
Lowering the pot values is definitely the way to go to keep the high end, so that the capacitance of the cable has less effect. I'd check SD and see what the minimum recommended load for the pickups is. I really don't see why it should be as high as 100k - maybe try 22k. Then I'd connect the hot wire of each pickup to the top of the pots, then take a 10k resistor between the wiper of each pot and the tip of the jack. These should reduce the interaction between the pots; if turning one right down affects the other too much, try increasing the resistors. PM me if you'd like a selection of resistors to try. The lower the value these resistors, the less treble loss you'll suffer, but a 22k pot and 22k resistors will still be better than a 100k pot turned down below 7. good luck!
 24.
I was reading some posts on a basschat topic today about a Trace rig on ebay and how great they sounded back in the day. Different strokes for different folks I suppose but I've never got on with TE stuff. I can never get (in my opinion) a good sound from the things. When I was getting serious about bass, in the 90's, these were the holy grail of bass amplification but I never got on with them. In the past whenever I turned up at a gig where the backline was TE or a rehearsal studio (where all old TE gear goes to die) and one of these greeted me I knew I'd be spending most of the first hour trying to get a halfway decent sound. Thank goodness for lightweight bass heads because now if the bass amp is a Trace I can just plug my TC head into the cab and get a decent sound right away. Does anybody else have a dislike of TE stuff or am I just a weirdo?
I don't like the sound of them. The best you could say is that the noise they make can be heard over the noise made by two guitarists and a metal drummer. That from my limited experience of their two-ton 4x10 and an amp with a graphic equaliser that glows in the dark.
 25.
Hey guys As i'll be installing Seymour Duncan Livewire Classic II humbuckers in my Thunderbird bass when I can afford them, I went to find a "2 volume 1 tone" wiring diagram but they only show one for 2 volume, 1 tone + 3 way switch and I don't want a switch in mine as that would mean drilling another hole in the bass. Not my idea of fun. So yeah, here's the diagram I found. Can someone edit the diagram so that it doesn't have the switch in there but so it's still 1 volume for each pick up and a master tone controlling both pickups please? Cheers guys Stevie
The grounding is all the same, as are connections to the pickups. But connect the wipers (centre pins) of the two volume controls together, and this to the tip of the output jack. Or, what Edward said. If you turn either pickup completely off, it'll mute the whole guitar. But this was also the case with the original drawing. Passive basses swap the wiper and top (the pins on the left of the pots in this drawing) to get over this, but this means the pickups are shorted when vol is at minimum and I don't know whether the active electronics would like this. Also, I wonder why the pots are shown as 100k? They could be a lot lower (EMG suggest 25k iirc) to take advantage of the low output impedance of the active pickups and reduce cable losses...you could then put resistors in series with the wipers to reduce the muting effect. Personally I'd replace the pots with lower values and add resistors, pm me if you decide to do this and I'll see what I can sort.
