I need help with this wiring diagram! Please help?
Well I need it so that I can turn 1 pick up off and keep the other one on so what would you suggest? Also, you say about lowering the pot values, I thought that would be the case to be honest but I want the bass to produce as much high end treble as possible. What do you guys suggest I do? I'll PM you Bremen but cheers to both of you for your answers
Lowering the pot values is definitely the way to go to keep the high end, so that the capacitance of the cable has less effect. I'd check SD and see what the minimum recommended load for the pickups is. I really don't see why it should be as high as 100k - maybe try 22k. Then I'd connect the hot wire of each pickup to the top of the pots, then take a 10k resistor between the wiper of each pot and the tip of the jack. These should reduce the interaction between the pots; if turning one right down affects the other too much, try increasing the resistors. PM me if you'd like a selection of resistors to try. The lower the value these resistors, the less treble loss you'll suffer, but a 22k pot and 22k resistors will still be better than a 100k pot turned down below 7. good luck! -
I was reading some posts on a basschat topic today about a Trace rig on ebay and how great they sounded back in the day. Different strokes for different folks I suppose but I've never got on with TE stuff. I can never get (in my opinion) a good sound from the things. When I was getting serious about bass, in the 90's, these were the holy grail of bass amplification but I never got on with them. In the past whenever I turned up at a gig where the backline was TE or a rehearsal studio (where all old TE gear goes to die) and one of these greeted me I knew I'd be spending most of the first hour trying to get a halfway decent sound. Thank goodness for lightweight bass heads because now if the bass amp is a Trace I can just plug my TC head into the cab and get a decent sound right away. Does anybody else have a dislike of TE stuff or am I just a weirdo?
I don't like the sound of them. The best you could say is that the noise they make can be heard over the noise made by two guitarists and a metal drummer. That from my limited experience of their two-ton 4x10 and an amp with a graphic equaliser that glows in the dark.
Hey guys As i'll be installing Seymour Duncan Livewire Classic II humbuckers in my Thunderbird bass when I can afford them, I went to find a "2 volume 1 tone" wiring diagram but they only show one for 2 volume, 1 tone + 3 way switch and I don't want a switch in mine as that would mean drilling another hole in the bass. Not my idea of fun. So yeah, here's the diagram I found. Can someone edit the diagram so that it doesn't have the switch in there but so it's still 1 volume for each pick up and a master tone controlling both pickups please? Cheers guys Stevie
The grounding is all the same, as are connections to the pickups. But connect the wipers (centre pins) of the two volume controls together, and this to the tip of the output jack. Or, what Edward said. If you turn either pickup completely off, it'll mute the whole guitar. But this was also the case with the original drawing. Passive basses swap the wiper and top (the pins on the left of the pots in this drawing) to get over this, but this means the pickups are shorted when vol is at minimum and I don't know whether the active electronics would like this. Also, I wonder why the pots are shown as 100k? They could be a lot lower (EMG suggest 25k iirc) to take advantage of the low output impedance of the active pickups and reduce cable losses...you could then put resistors in series with the wipers to reduce the muting effect. Personally I'd replace the pots with lower values and add resistors, pm me if you decide to do this and I'll see what I can sort. -
Fleas new amps and unfortunate adverts in BGM!
So Gallien-Krueger spend a few quid on the first opening page of this months BGM with the caption "I have the choice to use any amp I want.......I have tried them all and I use Gallien-krueger." shame he has gone to acoustic then!
'I have the choice to wear any shirt I want...I have tried them all and I use George from Asda.' Is possible to build a speaker cab with...
bremen replied to Batfastard's topic in Repairs and Technical
No worries mate. I am surprised they wouldn't be robust enough, I've had dub step, reggae, drum'n'bass, electronica, soul and loads of other genres through the speakers and high volumes. Surely they can take the signal from one instrument if they can take that?
It doesn't take much to get loud in a car - the volume of the car isn't that much greater than the volume of the speaker box. It's a different story when you try to move the air in a room. But for playing at home the neighbours will get pissed off long before the speakers fry. Just don't expect it to be enough for a gig. -
Im after some music for the bass line for this Desmond Decker classic from waay back in the 1960s when i was a nappy wearing rug rat If anyone can help out? cheers daz
The run-up (what's the technical term?) is C major. Not what you might expect. Make your guitarist/keyboard player do it stacatto!

Brilliantly musical and inventive playing from Dale Black..imo
Mmm, not sure. He is clearly very very talented. I found his phrasing and general musical demeanor slightly anxious. It's hard to explain but it's not relaxed and smooth, wasn't sitting quite right for me, like it was one of those demonstrations that feels it's right on the edge of the player's abilities, fabulous though they are. Just my opinion you understand. It's been posted before, but this is much more my bag, because it is thrilling but also relaxed, you can feel how smooth it is and how completely comfortable the player is, and you can sense the way he's feeling while he's playing. It's entirely in the pocket, and the drummer's phrasing is so sympathetic to the groove allowing so much space for the bass to push and pull the overall dynamics.
Will you look at that congregation. Does this happen in Britain? Miserable old atheist as I am, this looks like a great advertisement for faith. -
And tucked in Ashley_Id's feedback is a comment about him/her buying that black tele. But it's curious that the seller with tons of feedback seems to be the dodgy one. Is there any possible legitimate explanation? I'm struggling to think of one, but maybe someone with more ebay experience or more imagination can help us out?
Nessaballard has mostly been buying and selling womens' clothing (and a fake dog poo/turd). Maybe she's trying to sell her partner's bass behind his back...not knowing that he's selling it anyway?
Yes.....it will give you a nominal figure as a guide. I've done it myself before.
DC resistance will be lower than the nominal impedance. 8 ohm speakers will usually read around 5 ohms on a multimeter.
I swopped a Musicman SUB for a beat up 1990's MIJ 57 reissue Precision. The guy I swopped it with probably thought he got the better side of the deal but i really love it. It has quite a shallow neck which is very easy to play and sounds great. I have another SUB and a Jazz but the Precision is my bass of choice.
While we're here. I got a CIJ Precision neck from Cetera a few years ago and it suits me better than any neck I've tried. Wide and shallow. I have this on a P body with flats and it's just as many here have said, the bass you'd save from a fire. Now I want another P to put rounds on. Is the CIJ neck a different shape from current Mexican P? If so, does anyone have one they'd part with?
Also the steel rods can add a bit of weight to the neck. I had a Walnut body so it didn't affect balance but is you spec light ash or something then it might be an issue.
My 'dinky P' in swamp ash is almost comically lightweight and the neck doesn't dive at all. Might do with Fender type tuners, but it's fine with Schaller lightweight.
I want to buy a bass with a unique sound. I want this bass high / slap sound from the fender Marcus Miller bass and a huge low sound. What bass you suggest? Also interested if i do not find a production bass, to buy a handmade instrument. i want from this bass an alder body, maple neck with birds eyed maple fingerboard.for this bass I have not decided what pickups and what electronics will have. my opinion is 1)bartolini 9J1 with aguilar OBP-3TK on board preamp or 2) Delano JC 4 HE/M2 pickups with Delano Sonar 3MS/E on board preamp. What is your opinion?
I know a few BC'ers have experience with them. I just did a build on there for fun and did a calculation for VAT, Duty etc etc and it seems either their prices have gone down or the exchange/duty rates have changed a lot. A similar build I did last year came out at around 800 quid landed im now looking at 520. I hear varying reports about them as an instrument though, anyone care to share some stories?
I've built three Warmoth basses. They're very solid, necks fit perfectly in pockets. The necks are rather deeper than Fender equivalents (though I see they now offer options). One of the fretted necks needed work by a professional luthier to get rid of fret buzz; the other is OK but could probably be improved. The ebony fretless board is perfect. My 'dinky P' in swamp ash is noticeably light at 3.4kg, about the same as my Hohner B2A.
