'once we did a gig and there weren't many people there'.. oh well.
Yeah, the bucket of piss story was hard to follow. I liked that Slade used to do Zappa covers though. Noddy Holder singing Brown Shoes Don't Make It, yay!
 2.
the squishy unreliability of humans
I love this phrase! Look forward to hearing Robert Peston using it.
 3.
Hi guys, got trace elliot 2x10 cab, that recently started making strange noises. I found that one of the speakers got torn speaker cone. Drivers installed in cab are celestion c10t 150 - 8ohm each, cabinet wired into 4ohm total. I couldn't find find any info about those drivers - what replacement driver how should I chose from availaible currently on the market? I'm aware of impedance issues, but do both drivers have to be at the same power rating? Once I have to replace the driver I'd fancy to have a little bit more power in reserve, so what if I mix ie 150watt with 300 watts? Cheers Kris
The power you put into the cab will be shared equally among the speakers, so there's no point in having one rated higher than the other. Can you not repair the torn cone? It's only paper. Or have it reconed?
 4.
Schrodinger's Bass?
It was both a Squier P and a 6 string fretless Warwick Thumb before he opened the box, yes.
 5.
Clearly there's a DIY opportunity for someone here Go and build two 100% identical P bodies, making one of oak and one of pine. Put identical necks and electronics on them. Now plug them in and see if they sound the same. Hint: they won't... ficelles
Someone on Talkbass did just that - the pine was literally just a lump of scrap timber, no attempt made to make it 'guitar-shaped' and posted sound samples. Result: some folk couldn't tell the difference, some could, but those that could guessed wrong 50% of the time.
 6.
... well I think so anyway - I've seen him a few times with Robert Glasper and he always blows me away - he plays with tons of people including Mint Condition - anyway feel free to post your fave clips of him in action here's one with great ex-Miles Davis bassist (he played 'lead-bass' with Miles actually) - Foley - who grooves like a mutha throughout: Peace M
Full marks to the bass player for holding it together. Against all the odds.

 8.
Anything up to 25w will see you ok.
Sorry, Ou7, I'm not following you around just so I can disagree with you, but as Pickle says you need a fair bit of heat for lead-free solder and 25W is the bare minimum. I use one of these for general repairs: http://www.maplin.co.uk/50w-solder-station-35016 word of warning though - it puts a horrible amount of noise onto the mains so switch it off while you're recording. Took me hours to track down the buzz til I found this out.
 9. I felt one of these when I went to see Rammstein. Is the P pickup in the same position as would be on a Precision? And the MM, somewhere between MM and J bridge pickup?
 10.
That has to warrant an extra few Lotto lines..... Fantastic piece of rock history!!!
I'd be more interested in the FrankenP he used at Leeds. Does it still exist? Or has it been Townshended?
 11.
Big wires are the answer. And manly lead solder, for people smart enough to not lick the inside of their equipment.
Big wires, mmm...I was referring to the tiny wires inside the semiconductors in this case though. With you regarding Real Man's Solder. We have licence to use it here as we do medical electronics.
 12.
Its the way of the world these days; ever more complex, highly integrated technology. Wonderful stuff while it works but economically pointless to actually repair, except by simply replacing whole sub-assemblies... Modern cars are the same. PCs are the same. In fact, pretty much all modern consumer electronics are the same. It's just modern life.
What he said. Class D should, in general, be more reliable than AB as there's so much less heat generated; heat is THE enemy when it comes to solid state electronics. It boils capacitors and stresses all those tiny little wires.

 14.
Thanks for the introduction to Pink Fish. They certainly seem to know their stuff there! On the subject of speakers I have some Tannoys - pair of T125's and a pair of Chatsworths. I bought the Chats in '71 along with my Quad stuff and I have had good HiFi sound ever since. Are their any Tannoy experts out there who could give me an indication of how the Chats would 'sit in the market' today? Any comments much appreciated. Sorry to hijack the thread but it seems appropriate.
According to the geeks on the Yahoo Tannoy group, they're to-die-for drivers (and worth a fortune on Ebay) let down by pretty flimsy cabinets. Tannoy didn't nake the best cabinets pre-80s. I have a pair of Ardens, again the drivers are sublime but the cabinets quite coloured. One day I'll get round to building something better.
I done one of mine a while back Def helped but I reckon the wiring in this house is shot which isn't helping.
Seriously, if your house wiring is causing problems with your bass maybe you should get it checked before it causes problems with your health? And if the electrician says "Nah, you don't need insulation, the plaster shields it anyway", get another electrcian
It's not mine, it's a mate of mine's... I think it's easy to tell it's a 100W (2x50W) 2x10. But what else is a bit difficult as it has no serials, model numbers, it doesn't even have the impedance on it. Anyone got any ideas? I'm quite keen on it, but he's got no idea how much he wants for it.
As there are two speakers it's 4 ohms if they're wired in parallel, 16 ohms if serial.
 17.
Can you push the pups down far enough (maybe even jam them down with some card under the p/g) to get a set of plyers onto the screws?
I'd try that first. If that don't work, drill the screw heads off, lift the pickups out then you should be able to get pliers onto what's left of the screws. Might be worth putting tape over the pole pieces so they don't get bits of shrapnel stuck to them.
 18.
My Variax guitar is rather heavier on power than the average active bass - I run it off rechargeables (6xAA) for up to half an hour or so, but if I'm playing any longer than that, I use the phantom power system. It's all very simple, either I use a normal mono lead and run off batteries, or I use a stereo lead to the floor box and a mono lead from that to the amp. I'm not sure how the switching is done at the instrument end.
Here's a mod I just worked out (but haven't tried!) for systems that depend on a mono jack being plugged in to switch the battery on, ie where the battery -v connects to the ring contact on the jack. My EMG-P works this way. Fit a rechargeable NiMH battery. Connect a diode like 1N4148 across the battery, cathode to battery +v, anode to -v. Connect a second diode cathode to battery +v, anode to ground. Plugging a mono jack in will now turn on the internal battery. To use an external supply, use a stereo jack with the tip connected to the amp input as usual but with the ring connected to the +v of a battery, -v of this battery to ground. To charge the internal battery, take a NiMH charger and connect the -v to the ring, and +v to ground. You can't use the bass while it's charging. Anyone tried this? Shall I?
 19.
I've heard that it's possible to fry the pre-amp if you leave the lead in. A guy I know did it, and it was a pretty costly repair as he didn't know how to do it himself.
He must have done more than leave the lead in to fry the pre-amp.

 22.
I'm with Bilbo on this one. And it also makes me think of the old adage: "99% perspiration, 1% parents credit card", or whatever
According to Joe Orton, the adage is "1% inspiration, 99% masturbation"
 23. I like this story. I've built three Warmoth basses. The fretless was gorgeous from the minute I bolted it together, ebony fingerboard on goncano alves (<---- is that right? looks like the name of some sort of psychedelic plant) that didn't need any finishing as it's an oily wood. The 5 string fretted instrument needed work from a real luthier, who got rid of all the fret buzz and made it really beautifully playable. The 4 string still rattles and buzzes; sometimes I feel it's a part of its character, other times it's annoying so I guess I should get the frets dressed at some point. Agreed that 4+1 looks alot better than 5 in a row on a Fendery headstock.
 24.
Danny Thompson has amazing feel in everything he does. I've never heard anyone wring so much out of just one carefully placed note as he does.
That's really nicely put, Rev.
 25.
£50 posted.
If I bump this, can you tell me what value the tone cap is? Thanks! (I'd buy it but I already have one, minus the tone cap, you see ;-)
