1.
Thanks for the introduction to Pink Fish. They certainly seem to know their stuff there! On the subject of speakers I have some Tannoys - pair of T125's and a pair of Chatsworths. I bought the Chats in '71 along with my Quad stuff and I have had good HiFi sound ever since. Are their any Tannoy experts out there who could give me an indication of how the Chats would 'sit in the market' today? Any comments much appreciated. Sorry to hijack the thread but it seems appropriate.
According to the geeks on the Yahoo Tannoy group, they're to-die-for drivers (and worth a fortune on Ebay) let down by pretty flimsy cabinets. Tannoy didn't nake the best cabinets pre-80s. I have a pair of Ardens, again the drivers are sublime but the cabinets quite coloured. One day I'll get round to building something better.

And if the electrician says "Nah, you don't need insulation, the plaster shields it anyway", get another electrcian
It's not mine, it's a mate of mine's... I think it's easy to tell it's a 100W (2x50W) 2x10. But what else is a bit difficult as it has no serials, model numbers, it doesn't even have the impedance on it. Anyone got any ideas? I'm quite keen on it, but he's got no idea how much he wants for it.
As there are two speakers it's 4 ohms if they're wired in parallel, 16 ohms if serial.
 4.
Can you push the pups down far enough (maybe even jam them down with some card under the p/g) to get a set of plyers onto the screws?
I'd try that first. If that don't work, drill the screw heads off, lift the pickups out then you should be able to get pliers onto what's left of the screws. Might be worth putting tape over the pole pieces so they don't get bits of shrapnel stuck to them.
 5.
My Variax guitar is rather heavier on power than the average active bass - I run it off rechargeables (6xAA) for up to half an hour or so, but if I'm playing any longer than that, I use the phantom power system. It's all very simple, either I use a normal mono lead and run off batteries, or I use a stereo lead to the floor box and a mono lead from that to the amp. I'm not sure how the switching is done at the instrument end.
Here's a mod I just worked out (but haven't tried!) for systems that depend on a mono jack being plugged in to switch the battery on, ie where the battery -v connects to the ring contact on the jack. My EMG-P works this way. Fit a rechargeable NiMH battery. Connect a diode like 1N4148 across the battery, cathode to battery +v, anode to -v. Connect a second diode cathode to battery +v, anode to ground. Plugging a mono jack in will now turn on the internal battery. To use an external supply, use a stereo jack with the tip connected to the amp input as usual but with the ring connected to the +v of a battery, -v of this battery to ground. To charge the internal battery, take a NiMH charger and connect the -v to the ring, and +v to ground. You can't use the bass while it's charging. Anyone tried this? Shall I?
 6.
I've heard that it's possible to fry the pre-amp if you leave the lead in. A guy I know did it, and it was a pretty costly repair as he didn't know how to do it himself.
He must have done more than leave the lead in to fry the pre-amp.
 7.
I'm loving the EBS octabass at the moment - lovely and clean.
I'm loving mine too. Huge. Scares the sh*t out of my singer.

 9.
I'm with Bilbo on this one. And it also makes me think of the old adage: "99% perspiration, 1% parents credit card", or whatever
According to Joe Orton, the adage is "1% inspiration, 99% masturbation"
 10. I like this story. I've built three Warmoth basses. The fretless was gorgeous from the minute I bolted it together, ebony fingerboard on goncano alves (<---- is that right? looks like the name of some sort of psychedelic plant) that didn't need any finishing as it's an oily wood. The 5 string fretted instrument needed work from a real luthier, who got rid of all the fret buzz and made it really beautifully playable. The 4 string still rattles and buzzes; sometimes I feel it's a part of its character, other times it's annoying so I guess I should get the frets dressed at some point. Agreed that 4+1 looks alot better than 5 in a row on a Fendery headstock.
 11.
Danny Thompson has amazing feel in everything he does. I've never heard anyone wring so much out of just one carefully placed note as he does.
That's really nicely put, Rev.

 16.
I would expoect to need to put down at the very least the following:- Rhythm Section: Bass (most important, obviously) Timbales Congas Keys Guide Vocal In one go. Ideally I'd want the horns down as well, but you are looking for a huge live room to do that, and this is almost certainly outside your budget. Could the horns overdub their parts??? Their being able to do that is really going to make or break the result.
What he said. Recording horns is a joy; trying to keep the sound of horns from the percussion mics is a nightmare.
 17.
How about I connect the Mac audio out to the AUX input on the player and use that for monitoring – the thinking being that what I hear from the player should be a good approximation sound of what I’ll hear from a Mix burn to a CD. I’ve not tried it yet – lame excuse is - I’ve got to fit a shelf above the Mac. Anyway, thoughts and feedback from you chaps would be very welcome. Oggy
Do that. Find a compromise between what sounds good on headphones and 'ordinary' speakers. Headphones can be very revealing, but it's easy to get a 'lush' sound on cans that sounds thin and orrible on speakers. There's a competition ongoing at DV247 to win some monitors, good luck!
 18.
Truly excellent microphone.
It looks just like a Telefunken U47 ;-)
 19.
This is correct. Another clue is that originals have chrome posts as opposed to nickel and show only a slot viewed from the front whereas repros show a central hole as well as the slot. *anorak off*
But the repros are better, right?
 20.
The Corvette $$ 5 I had was awesome, just the neck I couldn't live with. Warwick seem to be more concerned about their brand than credibility with musicians. The older stuff is marvellous and has a great vibe to it (I still want an old Thumb NT5) but to me, they're more concerned with <insert this years signature model> than their core product.
My sister has an old NT5 that she might be selling...PM me if you're interested.
 21.
Had a particularly fine Dover Sole many years ago. Yes, entirely toothsome. Can't remember exactly when. I know Johnny Ludlow was there. Of course, I was very, very drunk.
Good to see your old avatar back, Skank; always makes me smile that one
 22.
I have one of these in ABSOLUTELY IMMACULATE condition. It has been used a handful of times, maybe 5 times.... Looking for around £220, but open to offers and will except trades on guitar pedals etc. Looking for a line6 DL4 specifically. Thanks Scott
I use one of these, my favourite mic for vocals. Gets a great 'intimate' sound. Well worth the asking price.
 23.
Double P... *barf*
That pickup by the bridge - surely the tone from the D and G is going to be jarringly different from the E and A?
 24.
I just remembered I've got an old bass I've not touched for ages sat in a hardcase in the corner that also has a neckplate/bolt on design. Measured it up and it's the neckplate that's wrong as the screws appear to be identical... I'm currently pondering whether to destring/butcher it and keep that tucked away until I can replace it...
Do that. I'll be attempting some gonzo luthiering next week and I'll have a spare neckplate that you can have to put back on the 'donor' bass.
 25.
Hi bremen I just quickly measured the plate - the holes themselves are about 6.5mm (6.35mm perhaps?) and the edges of the actual countersink measure about 10.5mm. The screwheads look to be a tiny bit short of 8mm. If you have something bigger that'd be great, drop me a PM with details if you want Cheers
That sounds like the holes in the plate are big, rather than the screws being small. I'll measure my plate and screws when I get home.
