I don't know whether it makes any difference but they think it does!!
I wonder if this is maybe a sponsorship thing, in that Snakeoil Cables PLC have gone to the owners of a high-profile studio that's about to be renovated and said -we'll provide all the cable for free if we can quote you in our advertising?
 2.

Looks like the Warmoth 'Dinky P' body. Pretty!

Bit disappointed by the story though - basically what happened was one of the singers moaned about the drums taking too long so he flounced off in a cream puff.
 4.
Ah, that sucks. Remember reading an interview with him in Sound on Sound and his reaction when one of the backing singers in the Human League got a bit of ego on. Priceless. Interview here if you're interested.
I'd like to see that, but the link doesn't work.
 5.
I hate you. (I saw that Jazz on the for-sale section a little too late )
I'd just like to say I think Radge Against the Machine is a great name. And that I love my Precision, too.
 6.
Blimey, you get pulled up easy on here don't ya!! Jeeeez
You mean 'easily'.
 7.
I have a 1957 Fender Catalogue & Price list. A Fender Precision in 1957 cost $225. After a little research (So don't shoot me), the average house price in California in 1957 was $4600, which works out at around 5% of the average house price. Todays market, with the average UK house price at £164k, would make a new fender P Bass at £8,000. Not sure what this tells you though?? This is not really comparable though, because at the time, in '57, there were no other basses available, so there is no comparism, as to whether Fenders were expensive, or cheap. They certainly didnt cheap out on quality parts in the 50's, and everything was hand finsihed. It wasnt until the mid 60's when they got cheap alternatives of almost all components, and started the 'production line' system of mass production.
I don't know that house prices are a good yardstick, how about wages? Average Yearly Wage in 1967: $4.550.00 Average Yearly Wage in 2010: $39,856 relative cost of a Precision in 2010= $1970 Not sure what this tells us either! and yes: Adam's bass looks like a nine year old girl has designed it based on what's available in her nail polish drawer.
 8.
So if I'm not mistaken, back in the days of "vintage" instruments, bass players wore clothes made of sandpaper and squeezed their instruments into cases lined with sandpaper, etc. etc...
...and used the thin end to poke the fire...
 9.
Sore fret fingers. Sorta hoping they are going to go away soon... The soreness, not the fingers. The latter could make playing even more difficult. Q - got standard out-of-the-box roundwounds on the VMJ. Would Flats make things more comfortable? Or should I just man-up?
D'Addario Chromes are definitely more comfortable. But yes, you should suffer for your art.
 10.
2009
So that very clean 1952 P is an £18000 fake?
 11.
If I was in the market for a Fender now, I wouldn't waste my time and hard earned on some long shot from 30 years ago, I'd just buy a new one, and by new I mean 2010 to present, because Fender are producing some really great basses right now that out play a lot of the driftwood from the 70s.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FENDER-1952-PRECISIO...=item5ae08994b0 'Unbelievable' is about right. For that price you could buy over 20 new ones, and at least one of them would be a gem. When, incidentally, did they start through-body stringing?
 12.
Yes, when i play the bass through the amp i get perfect bass notes but at the same time i get a small/quiet electric shock which can be heard through the amp/speaker. It feels like a very small static shock through my fingertips when i touch the strings
Check that there's a connection between the bridge and the internal grounding (ie the pots, ground contact on pickups and jack socket). If you don't have a multimeter, try connection one end of a piece of wire to the bridge and the other end to the body of the jack. If the problem goes away, this connection is missing internally and should be redone. Do you get the same problem wherever you are, or is it at a particular venue (one where the lights run off teh same ringmain as the amp, for example)? You may need to screen the control cavity with copper tape. None of these jobs is particularly difficult with a Precision, beautifully simple electronics.
This is a cheap and easy way to insulate and soundproof- http://www.planetinsulation.co.uk/ZGA3050.php We use it at work quite a lot for lofts/Studding ect.
For sound insulation? Really?

 15.
Ok, I'll bite! - sure have an opinion about how a Bass isn't to your liking but seriously, ripping a guy you don't even know just because of the Bass he plays or the music he's in to is a major low ball. All the chats and comms I've had with John Turner have been helpful and informative. He helped me select and import a Bass once too - which he didn't have to do.. Not shouting or ranting, just would like to add a bit of perspective to the thread. Sometimes I am amazed at the closed mindedness of some!! - I've long hair, a goatee and long hair..oh dear, I play more than one ERB and like Dream Theater. WTF does that make me?
Yeah, but you're one of us ;-)
 16.
TimR, this is the way my plans are drifting, though I'll be using plywood (now NOT marine ply!) rather than plasterboard. This is down to personal preference and very restricted DIY skills ... I bloody hate working with plasterboard but I know where I am with plywood.
Fair enough, but you will get more sound reduction with plasterboard. Might be cheaper too.
 17.
I started out on Rotosound, 15 years then went to Elites 5-10 years with a few jump backs to Roto solo bass now use GHS boomers nickle, love them they feel warm and have a lived in feel, no clanky zingy suprizes to EQ out. (Fingerstyle pop covers).
+1, I tried Boomers after years of Rotos and, like the OP, loving their sound when new then being frustrated by their poor lifespan. Boomers aren't quite as zingy at first, but they grow old more gracefully. I think the overall sound is more 'musical' and on a Precision you get a huge range of tones from deep and round to clanky and gritty.
 18.
What practice amp do you all rate for a complete beginner to bass. I've got a Fender MIM Jazz Bass and have no idea what amp to get, I'm into Blues and Classic Rock so any suggestions as where to go with an amp purchase would be appreciated. Not bothered about mega watts jsut as long as it has a headphone socket to keep the wifey happy.
I won one of these http://www.djmmusic.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=20-BA in a raffle organised by Yorks5stringer. It's got a great sound through headphones, a very useful compressor and is surprisingly loud and clear for its size.
 19.
If you want some better isolation then put your floor down on tennis balls. Seriously. But batten down around the floor area. Fill this area with old tennis balls. not literally but not more than an inch or so between the balls. Put your actual floor down on that. The balls will compress as more weight goes on, but they will support literally tonnes of weight. With enough weight the compression is such that the inner build doesnt roll off, until that point just secure the inner floor in place temporarily. Once your floor is in place, build battens off that and double layer it with plasterboard. The two layers of plasterboard should be caulked and at an offset so the seams dont line up. Dont use foam, high density rockwool is the way for some sound insulation. That and the air gap will be fine. Then whack a ceiling up and double layer that with plasterboard. The isolation will be good enough to support the use of this space for getting medieval on the sionger's a**se if he hits the notes wrong, you can supply your own pliers and blow torch....
+1 to all that. And make sure it's airtight except for the deliberate ventilation. Friend of mine did a great job on his garage using this stuff: http://www.domesticsoundproofing.co.uk/sou...oofing/rbar.htm and a lot of heavy plasterboard. He doesn't use live drums but anything else is inaudible from outside, and his neighbours still love him.

 23.
The same guy has just listed http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WAL-4-STRING-FRETLES...=item2c5c8cb72c and http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-STRING-WAL-BASS-/1...=item2c5c8d0c1c Basschatter?
I find it ever so slightly creepy that he keeps referring to it as 'she' and describing it as 'beloved' (not so beloved that he isn't pimping her out, mind).
 24.
Just a quick update on this one. The buyer left negative feedback stating, "the bass was a fake and the seller was unreasonable, but paypal helped me", to which the seller replied, "cash converters were happy to buy this original 1978 bass, this buyer was wrong". So look out for a shonky P-bass, coming soon to a cash converters near you...
Bet he didn't get £800 for it...
 25.
Yeah, I didn't get told about that incident until I'd done most of the work and it had been sat around my house for 18 months. Raw sewage marinated guitars are pretty unfashionable I guess.
Tell us the story! I think it looks bitchen
