2.
I was always under the impression that Billy sheehan was all bells and whistles, playing with mad technique and thats about it. but than i watched this video and technique, soul or whatever - its plain awesome! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_5EDyD9D1Q what do you guys think??
Great sound in the lower register. Can't wait to see the 'shreds' version of this...
 3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTG_iTUWnvw&NR=1 Toots and the Maytals. Recent-ish, I think.
 4.
It looks a really neat job especially if you built it in a day - it would take me weeks by the time I sorted which tools I needed and packed and unpacked them from their various hidey holes 4 or 5 times.
And discovered broken blades, and crossed town to find that Homebase have never heard of routers, and ran out of glue at 3:59 on a Sunday afternoon and...
Any chance of posting your plans on here? How did you size the ports did you run a simulation or guess (are they simpe 'holes' or 'pipes').
Yeah please do! I have a pair of Beta 10s gathering dust.
 5.
What’s the opinion and consensus on which strings to use? I ordered two extra sets of D’Addario EXL170S for the short sale bass I bought. Any opinions or advice? Jack
If there were ever two words that don't belong together, they're 'consensus' and 'string' ;-)
 6.
I have an old GK MB150 combo and its great. I often use an 8ohm extension cab with it to use the extra little bit of power. Is it possible to just put in a 4ohm speaker and not use an extension cab?
You could, but it won't be as loud or deep as using it with he extension. You probably won't notice much difference betwen the combo with 8 and 4 ohm speakers; it won't double the power but will just add a couple of dB.
 7.
Was it a silvery grey colour? He has a Lakland Bob Glaub in that finish! In fact, he did use a customised Tele bass in the early 70s and roundabout (hehehe0 the Relayer era, was using a Jazz bass onstage.
It might have been. I thought it was white but I was a bit distracted by an old woman singing in a very high voice 'If I was a flower I would worship the sun'. Oldgit makes a very good point :-)
 8.
Might be a fender, but it still has that instantly recognisable Chris Squire sound.
Indeed - I saw him on TV not long ago playing a Precision and getting that 'unmistakeable Rickenbacker sound' out of it.
 9.
Check out the bass solo (played on a P) in this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bimNMiz250
That's really a P?
 10.
Very tough news Steve. I think the only place more screwed than here is Zimbabwe.
I can see you've travelled a bit.
 11.
Tahnk you for the help, even though I don't see the link between those killers and CrazyKiwi... Like a nonsense for a french man like me. But here, have a big Bump to this bass, or at least CrazyKiwi could make another thread cause this one is not good for a Celinder !
Here's a bump for the bass sale, a character reference for CK 'I have known the man for 1 year and he is no serial killer' and a protestation at the banning of tBBC who is by a country&western mile the most entertaining member of AssHat; as a mung-bean eating, tree-hugging lefty I long ago stopped taking anything he says personally. Or, if that doesn't work: don't make him a martyr! and it's better to have him in the tent pissing out than outside the tent pissing in!
 12.
...then i realised that what i liked about [*] was their fallability as much as anything else.
You're a Fall fan, aren't you?
 13.
I particularly liked this in the ad; "Item does not come with a hard case"! Excuse my naivety, but does this thing really exist? or is it a photoshop creation?
It's quite likely an advertising gimmick for his shop, that mostly sells less, er, 'exotic' instruments. It's working!
 14.
While the Clash eventually went on to suck on the corporate tit, i wouldn't say that joe Strummer and his beliefs were contrived, or plastic as you say, he may have been an arse at times but i think he really did mean what he said and he treated his followers and fans with a lot of respect. Raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer I think he might’ve been our only decent teacher
I think you're right and I don't know what came over me. Bad day at work. The Clash had a great deal of substance to go with their style, and it was only their latterday Rock Star posturing that turned me off.
 15.
Excuse my ignorance but I've not really heard of this Colaiuta chappy
He's namechecked in F. Zappa's 'Catholic Girls'.
 16.
I'd go further and say they created their own trademark sound as a rhythm section - and if anyone tries to do anything along those lines, their influence is clear for everyone to hear. They're one of the great rhythm sections because they gave us one of the classic rhythm section styles.
I'd go along with that, though they never really moved me. Chacun a son groove.
 17.
bloody students.* I do not condone stunedtism
Ten bids so far! It can't be physically possible to play the lowest neck, surely, unless the strap was so short that you couldn't see over the top of the body?
 18.
Actually, he was the muso of the group and a bit "square". They made his life rather difficult actually (giving him semen sandwiches to eat, for instance), and he left, or was pushed. The Pistols was a business venture, and all about John Lydon and his backing band. Sid was a bit of an anachronism. Anyway, if the OP is being told to get a Fender P, it will be Sid the band want.
Malcolm McLaren's version and J. Lydon's version are quite contradictory aren't they! Compare and contrast The Great Rock and Roll Swindle and The Filth and the Fury. Lydon's book No Blacks No Dogs No Irish is a good read too. That's where I heard the 'sp**k baguette' story. I thought it pretty funny when Matlock rejoined, assuming that he'd read the book ;-) I guess to most people Sid was the bass player, right enough, so yeah it's got to be a white Fender P. Played by a very pale skinny bloke with a sneer and a moronic public image.
 19.
+1 Gotta have the big logo and a dodgy Ebay one (or do your own) is a great option.
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=fecker+jizz
 20.
Just to put all of this to bed I am going to get a squier vintage modified P that second hand will cost me about£150.00 and will change the pickup. If the dep job goes on a little longer and I am into it I will look again at possibly the fender delux or something. Thanks to everyone that chipped in and to the people that started having a go about gear snobbery. As Steve Jones said to Bill Grundy f£$k off you dirty f£$%&rs, you c£$t
Good plan. Are you looking for a tribute Bill Grundy to complement the act? I'll see you later. I hope not to see *you* again ;-)
 21.
Will the audience care ?.
Indeed - and can anyone except a bass player tell the difference between a white Precision and a white Jazz?
 22.
I think plastic means all style no substance.
Yes. NMTB has style *and* substance.
 23.
The brilliant production? The meticulously layered guitars? It sounds great, but it's not the sound of four scrotes playing in a garage.
That's not what I thought was meant by 'plastic'. Yes, it's as produced as Dark Side of the Moon. To me 'plastic' means 'imitation'.
 24.
Most UK bands from the 70's were more about look than substance.
I agree, but to me the Pistols were one of the few that had a f*** of a lot of substance and still sound exciting and dangerous, while most punk albums of the era just sound silly.
 25.
The Pistols were one of the most plastic punk bands of all. I still like 'em, though.
They were? I thought they invented [the UK version of] it...they certainly didn't dress fashionably at the start, it was the audiences that created the uniform of mohawk and leather. What's plastic about Never Mind the Bollocks? Plastic punks: UK subs, The Clash, Discharge... (runs for cover...)
