Are you or yr band political?
Definitely, admittedly I bitch a lot about this country and it's far from perfect, but we could do a hell of a lot worse. It's one of the best in the world, but don't read too much into that
Being able to bitch about this country is one of the fine things about it. -
Yeah, that seems to be a common belief amongst many of my comrades as you might expect. I should add, that I really have no faith that my beliefs are workable, the way that human race stands. I just don't think we're evolved enough to embrace what I'm gunning for, human nature just makes us far too selfish in general to voluntarily share (something else most of my brethren disagree with me on). So really, my cause is hopeless. Life's a bitch.
On the other hand, a little socialism goes a long way. Take the NHS, council housing (remember that?), trades unions. Life would be a bigger bitch without them. We have a long way to go but we're a long way from feudalism :-) -
I personally believe that true socialism is not possible without anarchy, and that all these "socialist" states we've seen are really just authoritarian empires, enforcing a socialist economy upon the people as a way to hide the fact there is no rael freedom.
Marx would have it the other way round, that socialism is a stepping stone towards anarchy. If you remove government from a capitalist state, the resultant anarchy wouldn't be of the love-and-peace variety. I'd agree that most states that call themselves socialist are authoritarian (with the possible exception of Cuba which has done incredible things for Cubans despite the US's best efforts). -
The truth is, you can't be anarcho-socialist without being a hypocrite. This isn't a dig, we are all hypocrites. Vegetarians sitting on leather seats, wearing lipstick etc. Who is your internet provider? I doubt its the local Mung-bean cooperative. If you feel the need to get signed, you'd need to accept the hypocracy that comes with it. I don't know a single famous musician who's really true to their beliefs. But then I don't know any person who lives 100% in line with their belief system. Look at Bono. What a c***.
We don't *eat* the leather seats! -
And does it cause any problems within your band? I ask, since I'm a vehment anarcho-socialist, yet my band mates are all pretty average, run of the mill guys (basically capitalists in this society, IMHO anyway). They're good mates though, we've been friends for years and we all love the same music so it works. We keep politics out of our music, since I'm sh*te at writing lyrics and the singer doesn't really care about politics enough.
Aren't socialism and anarchism mutually exclusive? I had some trouble with a band I was in a little while ago as the guitarist mouthed off about anarchy and smashing the state but had no problem with benefitting from the (socialist in principle) Welfare State. Isn't anarchism just another word for laissez-faire capitalism? I'm going to wish I hadn't started this... edit: by the way, the 'young conservative' in my sig is ironic; I'd describe my politics as left-of-livingstone. -
I suppose a lot of shops have seen their profit margins closing up as the Pound Sterling has had less buying power abroad (I don't think there's very much bass gear actually manufactured in the UK). They've probably used the 2.5% reduction in VAT to recoup some of those lost margins, essentially keeping their prices the same.
Good point - I've been surprised at how little Thomann's prices have risen considering the strength of the € and $. We're all doomed, though, it's true.
According to EMG's wiring instructions, you don't use a bridge earth wire. See point 4. here: http://www.emginc.com/downloads/wiringdiagrams/PJ_models.pdf Is your battery OK? Check all your solder points - redo any that look dull.
I installed an EMG P according to their instructions and got an annoying 'click' every time I touched a string. Grounding the bridge to the pot bodies fixed it.
The easy answer is to favour the bridge pick up when you play, and regarding controls, well I don't know what bass you've got exactly man but the best thing for you to do would be to sit down with your bass and get 100% comfortable with your eq, and then when you are it is then a simple case of making sure the bridge pick up is louder than the neck pick up but make sure you haven't got too much treble rolled on and that there is enough bass pushing the mids across. Or as Jake said, save up for a Warwick Thumb bass
I'm still not really sure what's meant by 'growl'. The Geddy Lee sound? or is that more 'snarl'?
Marconiphone valve based reel to reel tape machine. SPARES/REPAIR free if you can collect from Brighton eves / weekends. Takes small 'domestic' (7") reels. makes big hum / noises atm when switched on and I don't have the time to investigate. 'Magic Eye' tube appears to work and pretty good physical condition. If interested let me know and I can sort a pic. Would be shame to see it go to the recycling skip if anyone interested.
If no-one takes it, might be worth rescuing the valves?
+1 Though that later one is a solo rather than a "cut through the band" tone. Having watched that loads of times, and as a horn player, I like watching his breathing - it fits in with the phrases, just as we have to on our aerophones
Interesting, as John was of course a horn player... Dennis Bovell reckons that horn players make the best bass players.
hey i really need some help i want to build my own amp and i am completely stuck. to cut it short i would be really grateful if some one could point me in the direction of a good informative site were i can get to grips with the absolute basics. thank you very much for your time the funk man
You say 'absolute basics' - does this mean you haven't built electronic gear before? If so then it's a bit over-ambitious to start with an amp. Why not try building some pedals first, build your skills that way then move on to preamps and eventually the whole amp? If you're a beginner you'll make mistakes. Mistakes involving power amplifiers can be very expensive (and painful/hazardous as previously mentioned). edit: Sorry if that sounded a bit negative.
Shame he used his orange Spector on 90% of the stuff he's recorded. I have seen him with a Thumb 6 though.
D'oh! Once again I fall for the marketing machine. I saw him one time and he was handed a different Thumb for each song, it seemed. I'd never seen a 5 string fretless before. I got close to the sound on Hard Left with the 4 string anyway, so it worked for me. The I got a Music Man because I liked the sound on Blood Sugar Sex Magic ;-) You'll be telling me that Lemmy uses an EB0 next. Edit: I've just ben handed a piece of paper that says Flea used a WAL on BSSM and I should pay more attention.
Theres nothing wrong with detuning, all of my basses are a full step down, I really don't see myself playing in standard for a very long time and that'll only be when a guitarist gets too emotional over not being able to think for himself, it's a comfort thing as well as tone, I like having my F in the G position for example and I like to fret my low E in stead of an open string, and the tension is just perfect for my right hand as well, and tonewise my basses just sound sonically bigger and warmer than when in standard. I unerstand what you mean 100% about the stereotype of downtuning, it gives it a bad rep but most of the early 90's Hip-Hop/Funk was either recorded a full step down or a half step down, even funk stuff from the 70's and 80's was as well. And those recordings just sound so warm and beefy to my ears.
What gauge strings do you use to get a decent tension?
Hi all, i have been known to use Fast Fret to add a bit of zing to my strings and make them feel a little smoother and silkier. Then someone (who's opinion i value) said it eats away at the wood in the neck and doesn't do it any good in the long run. Does anyone know anything about that? Or does anyone use any product on their strings to add like to them? I'm sure it's probably been covered before in a topic somewhere but i couldn't find anything about it. Thanks
I use Fastfret and it hasn't made my neck fall off yet.
