1.
I have had my old Precision bass lying idle for the past few years after a 'accident' in Ripon North yorkshire (i'm sure one day it'll be one of those rock n roll hall of fame moments). Anyhoo to cut a long story short after not being able to put Artissans lovely lovely basses down at YBB i've decided i need to play one again. So over a long time im going to slowly build up my project. BUT this may be a no go when i get a pro to check out the damage and see how bad/how much its going to be to repair if neede. (Crack from the neck plate area into to the body just below the top horn area). So if it is clear for take off i am going to get it sprayed black - 3 ply BWB scratch plate - maple neck- chrome hardware. Think i may put a cheeky bridge gaurd on it for pure asthetic reasons if i can play with it on. It has a J PUP and that is where i play. So advise/tips/rule/bass fas paux i should look out for? Would the purists be outraged if i stuck a 70's neck plate and a 60's (just guessing) bridge on the same guitar? and can you advise me on good/bad choices for - Neck Neck plate Machine heads Scratchplate Bridge P PUP J PUP Bridge cover Pots Knobs Nut and anything else i've not thought about. sorry if it all sounds a bit amatuer....that's coz i am! good day.
Warmoth necks are very stable, a bit heavy and fat (from front to back) but bombproof according to reports. I have three and they aren't going anywhere. Neck plates are much of a muchness. I'm told that there should always be a cushion between neckplate and body but have never been able to find one to buy separately from the plate. Anyone? I have a new set of Gotoh machine heads if you'd like them . Cheapest scratchplate I've found was a tortoiseshell from Thomann, fits a US Precision perfectly and looks good. You can also get Fender gold anodised pickguards from various sellers on Ebay that look fantastic (and don't need sheilding, bonus!) but one or two of the screwholes don't line up with the holes in modern Precision bodies Gotoh make a nice beefed-up version of the traditional bent-tin Fender bridge. Pups - huge choice here, droogie! I use Seymour Duncans. If I'd been a Basschatter when I built my P I'd probably have gone for Wizards. No-one here has a bad word to say about the Wizard Thumper. www.thomann.de/gb are good for pots and nuts. I haven't used www.axesrus.com but they get a good press here. I'd expect the nut to come with the neck...? good luck, happy building and let's see it when it's done!
 2. Hello! I like Lanzarote, its unique bleak beauty (and sunshine and wind). Great place to ride a bike. Is there much of a music scene? What do you do there?
 3.
Played there several times with my previous band/s. Very much a rock venue, so unsure how a Blues Brothers tribute will be received.
He'll need to play both types of music then: rock AND roll. And bring his own chicken wire.
 4.
I think he's just making the point that this Jazz is styled on the Jazz of a particular era in a reasonably light hearted way in order to flog a few to those who might like a 70s retro vibe - which I presume is his job.
Fair enough. I've never seen Jazz basses as 70s retro though, no more associated with the 70s than any other decade between 60s and 00s. Hope I haven't started yet another interminable Fender vs Warwick thread!
 5.
Maybe we just read it differently.
Maybe. I just wondered where he'd been the last few years when he wrote: 'Well, here’s a blast from the past – I haven’t seen this type of 1970’s style bass for many years and back in the 70’s they were usually accompanied by a pair of wicked side burns, a pair of ludicrously wide Birmingham bags (trousers to those who weren’t around back then) and completed by some 4 inch platform shoes that caused the owner to totter around like Frankenstein.'
 6. "[The Jazz] bass is a bit of a beast, generally much larger and heavier than the modern day designs it harks back to a time when men were men but is therefore quite cumbersome for a petite and portly curvaceous being such as I, and my first thought was how much more diminutive and ergonomic today’s bass guitars are." 7. I love them. They avoid two of the common pitfalls of metal that have always put me off - widdly guitar solos and macho lyrics. I guess some of their lyrics might be crass but I wouldn't know! The translations I've seen have been pretty interesting, intelligent stuff indeed. I spent an hour and a half on a coach in Norway last week and the Reise, Reise and Mutter albums on the ipod perfectly matched the scenery :-) Top tune: Moskau. Check out the video (and background story) for Mein Teil on Youtube.
 8.
I'm taking lessons, and I am coming along a bit, but I don't feel confident enough to jump in at some kind of open jam night, and would prefer to be able to chat with the other musicians about what we're doing, rather than have someone show me 4 fingers and just sink or swim .... How did other BCers manage the asencion from bedroom/study to playing with others?
I jumped in to open jam nights and bluffed it; like you I didn't feel confident enough but sometimes you just need to leave the comfort zone and sink or swim. You'll most likely swim, but even if you sink it's not like you drown! Good luck, it's an unbeatable buzz.
 9.
I've just got my Bassman 100 back after 15 years. It is a bit sick at the moment, having spent 10 years next to a tumble dryer. I'm going to have to dry the paper fibre tag boards out.
Horror story! Like hearing that someone's been using their Acoustic cabinet as a chicken coop. The 135 is great, much fatter than the 100.
 10.
Quick question. Anyone know where I might source an Eminence BP102-4 driver in the UK. Otherwise, anyone know of another suitable (temporary) driver to replace an Eden EC1060F 4 ohm from an Eden 410T cab? I've got a knackered speaker, but could really do with getting the cab back up and running for the weekend. The guy at 'The Amp Hospital' in Surrey apparently has an EC1060F, but I can't get a response from him at the minute, and i'm getting desperate!
Try http://www.bluearan.co.uk
 11.
Try and interact with your audience more. Nothing is more boring a singer who only actually talks to announce the next song name and maybe says "thanks guys" at the end of the show.
Not necessarily. Mark E Smith is the coolest singer (granted, 'singer' might not be exactly the right word...'frontman' then) I've ever seen and he usually wastes few words between songs. Singers that prattle on spouting their opinions on politics and the environment while the bass player looks embarassed are the worst. And if I want someone to ask me if I'm feeling allright I'll go and see my GP.
 12.
no for crows CAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! sorry for the stupid observations...
sorry, didn't mean to be rude, your post was just a bit confusing and your avatar brought a certain book to mind!
 13.
Ask this lot !!!! Precision Players Jazz Players
Good thread, and the usual ROTFL and +1 to tBBC. Looked at the wikipedia link above and it has to be admitted that many of the players cited moved on to basses other than the Precision, for whatever reason. Personally I prefer Entwistle's Precision tone to any of the carbon fibre quirky sh*t he used more recently but, whatever...
 14.
I get the feeling they have more problems with unstable power supplies in the US than we do.
Nah, they just have more gullible fools with wallets as fat as their arses. These cables might firm up the mid-bass and extend the soundstage in four dimensions, bringing an engaging immediacy to the tenor panpipe on Guns and Roses' version of Puppy Love and adding a spicy aftertaste to female vocals in 5/4 time, but would have naff all stabilising effect on a dodgy supply. You'd need one of my plutonium-free pre-oxidised cables for that. Available from my sole retail agent, www.waynepunkdude.com. $440, best price-weight ratio on the web.

 16.
Linked to my previous post about getting a Ric 4004.... Has anyone had any experience of importing from the USA? I'm looking at used/nearly new. My concern is the customs charges - how they are calculated, and so on. Any thoughts or experiences on this would be great, I'm a bit worried that I might get stung!
Import duty on instruments is a small percentage (about 3 or 4% iirc) but you'll have to pay 15% VAT on top of the total of cost+shipping+duty. And pay a fee to the courier for collecting it for you, expect a tenner at least. I don't think it matters whether it's new or used.

 19.
1> This 2> Generally it is directly from the input jack This may all be wrong, but I thought I'd start you off.
Nearly right, but in this context it means that it isn't connected directly to the input jack, but is isolated (buffered) so that if the tuner output is shorted or loaded it will have no effect on the main signal. So functionally it's connected to the input jack, ie pre-eq, but connecting a tuner with a low input impedance won't harm the signal.

 21.
That site makes my head spin with absurdity. http://www.dedicatedaudio.com/inc/sdetail/1574 - Not the most expensive cable on the site, but I love the quote – “The Audience powerChord offers outstanding price to performance ratio” !!!!!!!! $370 for 12 inches of power chord that has an “outstanding price to performance ratio”! How the f*** can/did they measure that ratio? Normal power cable = approx $5 from eBay Audience PowerChord = $370 Now I’m not a qualified mathematician, but I make that a cost ratio of approximately 74:1 – how the f*** can the Audience PowerChord be scientifically 74 times ‘better’ than a bog standard 13A kettle lead?!?! I am neither shocked or amazed by this, but highly amused
Lots of laughs to be had with pseudoscience, so long as it's not me or my taxes paying for it!
