1.
EDIT: Actually, I've been saying for the last few weeks that being in a band is a bit like being in a serious long-term relationship with four other men.
Or in my case: a gay man, a straight man and a woman.
 2.
All go for a pint - say you're leaving - promise to do all the work currently booked unless they can replace you before that. Be fair and it's less likely you'll upset the remaining band members , some of which you may wish to poach for your new project!!!
That's definitely the gentlemanly way to do it. I'm contemplating doing it myself, sorry to say.
 3.
I suppose the avatar is really the logical development of The Big Beef Chief's topless pose. Either that or Pissman (Pisstake?) played the backing music on The Full Monty. I hope to God that bass is being supported by the strap, with no under-pinning involved ...
I reckon he's auditioning for a RHCP tribute band.
 4.
1) whats fret wear? my bass has never tried to 'wear' anything...
Clearly it's following your example ;-)
 5.
With all due respect; bollocks!
That should be your sig ;-)
 6.
I'm not so sure. I see C sharp as the greedy bisexual between C and D.
The spit-roasted note?
 7.
I never play B's. My least favourite note.
Me neither. But C sharp: Phwoarr!
 8.
Ohhh, I think I get when you mean... Do you mean like Oteil Burbridge looks when playing? Try searching for a picture when you've got the time. If you look at Todd Johnson or Gary Willis, they use the floating thumb and advocate 'holding' your forearm/hand in place by way of your shoulder, i.e. effectively holding it out in front of you rather than resting it on anything. It's just a question of how much one is doing it and whether it's painful or not. You say you play hard, maybe try lightening up and seeing how that affects the pain? If that doesn't help, try half holding your arm (as you're doing) and half resting it on the bass, i.e. have some contact between the forearm and the bass, but not placing the full weight of the arm on the bass. Does that makes sense? This is what I do and it helps me stay relaxed whilst keeping good form. You could also try bringing the neck side of the bass closer to your fretting hand and pulling the bridge side of the bass further out from your right shoulder to even out the way your hands approach the bass. Of course, I can't see you so you may be doing all of these things, but off the top of my head those are some suggestions that may help. I hope they do. FWIW, sorry about the broken bones bud! They sound a bit unpleasant. Mark
Thanks, I'll have another read of this when I get home and behind a bass. I think for the most part I play as you recommend - it's only recently that I've been gettting the occasional ache and it may well be old age and reckless mountain-biking to blame as much as the playing.
 9.
What exactly is so odd about your posture if you don't mind me asking? Mark
I've seen a couple of photos where my right elbow is forward of the rest of me, as if I'm wrestling with an extra-heavy-duty whammy bar. Then again, I've seen loads where I look twice as relaxed as Family Man Barrett so maybe the awkward-looking ones were taken at the moment I played a particularly stinky chord. Did I mention I had a broken elbow as well as the collarbone. It's a miracle I can play at all.
 10.
would you split them (I mean sell them seperately as opposed to taking a hammer to them)
Which one do you fancy?
 11.
Umm, not quite? Look at Bill Dickens, or Victor Wooten (as examples). They both have their basses (somewhat/relatively) high, their wrists are cocked with the underside of their forearm resting on the top of the bass. Due to the height of the bass and the cocked nature of their wrists, their elbows are inevitably bent up alongside their body.
Gotcha. I definitely don't suffer from that. My odd posture is another animal entirely.
 12.
If you look at bassists who don't keep good form on their right arm, i.e. bent wrist and bent accompanying elbow, it looks remarkably like a chicken's wing. Avoiding this/mitigating this form is good to do! Mark
You mean the elbow sticking out in front of the bass? I tend to do this a bit, maybe because I hit the strings pretty hard? I know it's bad when it makes my right shoulder ache (having a broken collarbone doesn't help). I keep both wrists pretty straight though.
 13.
Played a gig on saturday night (originals band) and realised at the end that I only use the G string in 1 song (our set is only 8 songs), and use it a grand total of 14 times in that song. I'm thinking of getting a 3.
Or tune to BEAD?
 14.
chicken wing on the right arm.
What's that?
 15.
SCRATCH - the history of scratching. £4
this is great fun, recommended. Qbert and Mixmaster Mike are outrageous, and there's a bassline in there that's been stuck in my head since I watched it last week (I think it's the one that introduces DJ Shadow).
 16. Sorry to have to agree with everyone, but: do it. The only downside seems to be the travelling but you've said you're OK with that.
 17.
great thanks! got it from Cricklewood Electronics. Now for the next question, as i have zero knowledge in electronics where can i get them replaced? it seems like a very easy job for a professional.
I'll do it for the price of a pint if you post the bits to me (I'm assuming the preamp is an onboard preamp, not something that'd cost $$$ to post). PM me if you're interested.
 18.
hey all. Im looking to cutomise and replace some parts in my MEC preamp. the parts im looking for are TL072 and TL074 to replace the TL062 and TL064. Does anyone have any idea where i can find them online? everywhere i look it seems as if i'll have to buy a bulk of them, or spend more than 100£ on an order. I only need one of each. If the internet is not the right place, maybe somewhere around central london? thanks Ito.
Maplin Electronics have shops in various parts of London, they'll have them. Or Cricklewood Electronics.
 19.
Where's Alex Claber when you need him?
He's at home, nodding in agreement with what I said.
 20.
I have for sale four 10 inch, 4 ohm drive units by the British Hi-Fi company Kef. They are used in their 250 watt subwoofers. The units are un used and retail at £102 each. Would suit a custom 4x10 cab. Pics to follow....... £120 including postage, or
Do you have any technical specs (or part number)? Hifi subwoofer speakers are nearly always very inefficient so it might not be a very loud 4x10 but I'm interested...
 21.
Yeah. That dreaded time of year is coming and we have a couple of gigs lined up and need to included some xmas songs to liven up the party. We currently do Slade's Merry Xmas, but need a couple more maybe. Good singalong, easy to play, everyone knows them classics. What are your choices??? Mark
No Xmas for John Queays by the Fall.
 22.
no, i placed an order with BK Electronics. and in my stupidity, assumed that Stevie was talking about them.
No stupidity - BK is what was being discussed, Stevie didn't mention Hypex (about whom I've heard only good) til after you mentioned your bad experiences with BK.
 23.
ok, embarresed admition coming up  i only skim read that post and assumed he was talking about BK... whoops! anyway, i've e-mailed them now to see if they can help. considering other options as well. when things are sorted there will be a thread to share. and finally. "600 watts is a bit too much and so is the price!" i thought the exact oposite, 'i suppose 600w will do, especially at that price!'
so- who is the company that f***ed you about? Hypex? I was going to buy some of their stuff...
 24.
Blimey a Nomad Bassman, I had one of these when they came out and thought it was great, if i had the cash I would totally buy it, good luck with the sale.
Tell me more? Google isn't helpful. Who made them?
 25.
Just for reference, the Er15 data is as follows.... Freq (Hz) 125 250 500 1K 2K 4K 8K Att (db) 17.5 17.6 18.0 16.3 17.3 15.8 20.8 This equates to an almost flat graph and a much more 'natural' sound.
I stand corrected! I said, *I STAND CORRECTED!!!*
