Buy it! That's where they make Stella! A prison sentence for assault, GBH and murder awaits!
We rode past an establishment called the University of Artois. The Viz reader in me found that funny. -Where have you been? -ah, sorry I'm late, love. I was studying at the University of Artois.
Agree with the WWI graveyards. I'll be going again this year too.
I was horrified and moved to stumble upon a field full of graves of kids from New Zealand. What the f*** did it have to do with them? It's like a Brit in 2009 getting called up to join in a scrap between Jupiter and Uranus.
Obviously Holger Czukay from Can deserves a mention. Indeed, it was Can that provided much of the initial influence to Punk/Post Punk.
He was one of my inspirations, and must have influenced me but I'm not sure how. No-one else sounds like him. http://www.furious.com/perfect/holger.html : WHERE [sic] YOU SURPRISED WHEN THE PUNK MOVEMENT CAME ALONG AND PEOPLE LIKE JOHNNY LYDON AND THE BUZZCOCKS SAID THEY WERE BIG FANS OF CAN? I was more than surprised actually. I remember that in England I met Jah Wobble, of Public Image at that time, who had a six pack of beer. I didn't know what to think of him at the time but he said 'come on, I've booked a studio in Soho somewhere.' We recorded our first piece 'How Much Are They.' It was in a cellar of a chinese restaurant. Someone came in, it was two American girls who thought that this was a part of the restaurant. The engineer had an intercom microphone on to record this conversation. They were asking us these questions like 'how much are they?' This is the kind of interaction I like. When it comes up to this point with these spontaneous things, I think you're lucky when this happens. I should kiss the feet of these two girls.
Never play with a pick, same reason as Ste, bad cramps after about 10 minutes or so.
I have the same problem. Could be we're gripping too tightly?
PS. Does Robbie never play the orthodox two finger style?
He does, yes.
You get White Room, you get Cream. The problem with some of Cream's recordings is that they were rushed in the studio or let down live because they couldn't hear each other - sh*t PA, no monitors etc.
OK, I get *some* Cream. hyuk, hyuk, he said he gets the Cream of Sum Yun Gai ;-)
-
No disrespect but I just don't 'get' Cream. That track sounds clumsy and pedestrian to me. I've heard (and participated in) any number of 'blues jams' that sound just as bad. Or good. And if it's tone I want then a well-spanked Precision pisses all over that. Maybe it's of its time and I should give them credit for being original at the time. And White Room is damn fine.
Buy them and if they're completely dead slap 'em on ebay as 'perfect for getting the Jamerson sound'. Sorted.
Oi! That's my scam. Get yer own!

I'm not sure what that emoticon means. I'm guessing: ho hum! If so, I wouldn't agree that Robbie Shakespeare wasn't accomplished. Maybe no Victor Wooten, but surely one of the most individual and sought-after players of his time?
To be honest, I don't think it's possible.. anyway, I've checked through Google, if this thread could be reached by keywords - even with such key as "basschat" I could find simply nothing.
I don't think you have anything to worry about. You haven't been devious, have shown willing for the band and been encouraged by all at Asshat.
Are you sure you want to buy Belgium? It's very flat. I'd go for Azerbaijan or something if I were you.
That's what I thought. It was a very boring holiday as far as the cycling went; the WW1 graveyards were an emotional experience though.
The Google ads at the top of this page say "Bass Cort Guitar at Argos": open the ad and it's an "Encore" WTF is going on, how can they mislead people like this? Ad has gone now but it will be back......
I have a Gmail account. I exchanged a few emails with a friend on the subject of a cycling holiday in Belgium and sure enough I got an ad suggesting that if I wanted to buy Belgium then Ebay was the place to look...

Welcome Country Dude. Neepheid is actually pronounced 'neep heed' and is Scots for Turnip Head. Just so you know.

What's the most over-rated bass, or bass related product???
Vintage basses are overrated.
No-one disagrees with that, Shirley? Specially when 'vintage' nowadays seems to mean 'made before the turn of the century'. -
So, the story goes...
I feel your disappointment but hang on in; you know how flakey musicians can be. You haven't lost anything by learning their sh*t. Guaranteed you're a better player now than you were a couple of weeks ago. Maybe you should be applying for that course anyway, so whether or not they get back to you you have a choice of what to do. Sorry, obvious stuff really. Good luck.

'Yah, it's really retro!' Acute genius, as ever :-) -totally relevant to the Fendermania we're seeing on Ebay right now! not that I don't like Fenders, understand, but £2000 for a mid-70s Jazz with a mis-aligned neck? puh-leeeze... -
None at all...but it's highly unlikely that you will become an accomplished player. Steve
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RdAa2ktmWFc

There are 4 threads with this title...I chose this one to say: he does exactly what it says on the tin! Good man :-)
Normally your posts are about as good as it gets on this forum, well thought out and great points. Some of the stuff you wrote in the solo bass thread especially was really interresting to read recently, and although I'm a solo bass fan I couldn't help but agree with you. This however, is ignorant tripe.
It's *because* Bilbo's posts on important subjects are so reasonable and reasoned that he's allowed to strike a Grumpy Old Man pose on the subject of a silly 70s pop song. Just don't get him started on James 'Rhyming Slang' Blunt ;-)
Was just reading the thread on whether to use a pick or your fingers. Well I like to use my fingers, but don't like the sound I produce. I'm not very good at it, so I use a pick, I'm not very good at that either TBO, but I prefer the sound I get. However, I recently tried using just my thumb and that produces a nice fat sound that I like. Is there any reason not to just use my thumb? Just edited to say that when I use my thumb it's not slapping, but just plucking.
Good enough for Robbie Shakespeare!
I actually disagree I agree that arguments around what 'sounds good' may be subjective when you are trying to decide whether Dave Holland's bass sounds better than Marc Johnson's or whether Count Basie's band is better than Weather Report but, when we are talking about whether 'Moondance' sounds good, anyone who thinks it does is, frankly, delusional. In a nutshell, if anyone tells me that 'Moondance' sounds good, I cannot but immediately dismiss them as a lightweight. Its a bit like telling an art critic that 'The Haywain' was the greatest painting of the Nineteeth Century. You flunked!
I agree that Moondance 'swings like a bucket of sh*t' but that's just you and me and a few musos. Someone else might appreciate it despite, or even because of, its flaws. I love The Fall more than life itself. MES's singing is probably the world's worst singer, but I don't think I'd like them half as much if Aretha Franklin was their singer. It's stuck in my head now (Moondance, that is). Bastards.
I believe that this '78 is Ash.
I believe so too. If it weighs a ton, it's ash; if it's like balsa wood it's swamp ash. Alder has a closer grain and is somewhere between the two, weight-wise. I know it's not comparing like-for-like, but the heaviest bottom E I've heard from a P came from a '78-'79 ash (now the property of C. Beedster). It was very heavy in kg too, and felt dead acoustically. My swamp ash guitars feel more 'alive', as Sgt Pluck also noticed. Who knows whether that affects the amplified tone.
isn't it 'baking powder'?
Bacon powder sounds a lot more fun...
Doesn't matter, still sounds good and is enjoyable; isn't that the entire point of it in the first place?
I guess it'd be a dull place if we all liked the same stuff. Salut!
I like it, lots of other people like it, some people don't like it. Fun to play live too. I don't see how theres any more to the argument than this?
Like SteveK said, the OP was about the playing, not the song. I don't see how anyone could argue that it (the bass line anyway) is well played?
