I used to have a Laney DP300 - greta amp for the money in its day - did not realise they did a pre amp - thanks Anyone used the ashdown preamps or the Line6 Bass POD XT Pro?
I use the Line6 Bass POD XT Pro in the studio. I used to use it live, but it's got too many knobs. It's great if you spend the time setting it up. The presets need tweaking.
They look good although a bit more rock orientated than I was aiming for - what sort of second hand value do they have as they are bit pricey to create a spare rig? As an aside can you explain why I should knock the Behringer off the list?
I had one and found it had a very limited dynamic range between noise and *horrible* digital distortion. If you let it clip even slightly it lets out a huge cracking noise, louder than the signal. Shame, because apart from that it had a great range of sounds but I really wouldn't trust it for anything other than rehearsals. It's also a bit user-hostile for live use in that most controls have dual functions so you have to hold a button with one hand while turning a dial with the other. I use the Ampeg SVP pro now. It benefits from valve upgrades, it was microphonic when I got it. Sounds filthy (in a good way) now.
Only if everything is sourced and manufactured in the UK, any raw materials from abroad will cost more....
Aye, but the biggest part of the cost of a Status or a Shuker is the labour. And they'll be able to sell *loads* of them to Europe and the US. Which brings the foreign currency 'pon the island. C'mon, I'm trying to talk up the economy here!
I know from my side of the industry there are some very significant price increases in the UK coming next year.... we're talking as much as 40% in some cases.... Some stuff obviously comes in from the states but most manufacturers have European hub's now so it's not really going to help..... still gotta buy in Euro's.
The upside is that Rotosound strings will become cheaper than Warwick Red Labels :-) And Shukers will become cheaper than Fenders and Warwicks.
-
Wonder how many people will still want to use them when the Euro is worth more than the pound....
I think everyone's prices will be similarly high ifwhen that happens. I'm guessing that most gear is bought in dollars, and as the € rises against the dollar then companies like Thomann will be able to reduce the price in €.
Sorry to disagree but the majority of instrument cable is co-axial. Genuine instrument cable in has a lower capacitance than screened pair.
good point, crappy high capacitance cable has a drastic effect on the sound.
the jazz bass i'd recommend its an all round bass that feels great to play the neck things down abit i think torwards the 1st fret, so it feels really nice in your palm
Yes, but what feels really nice in one man's palm might not be so good in another. (ooer missus). Bit like saying 'size nine shoes fit really well'. I prefer a Precision, and I have small-to-medium hands; my guitarist friend here has hands like shovels and hates the P, loves the J.
its a phenominal bass to record with aswell
+1. As is the P. Nothing quite like a P with a pick :-) Sorry, that's really unhelpful. Luckily P and J necks are easily swapped (and re-sold).
I don't understand your point?
'If you look inside the Jack, instrument three [cores](Tip, Ring and Sleeve)' This is a stereo jack, and won't work with most active basses and effects pedals, as they depend on the sleeve of the plug shorting contacts in the socket to switch power on.
-
If you look inside the Jack, Speaker will usually have two cores and instrument three (Tip, Ring and Sleeve)
Shurely shome mishtake? Stereo instrument cables are pretty rare; most active basses (and effects pedals) won't even work if you don't plug a mono jack into them.
a depressed frog doing curry farts in a lukewarm pond
I know the sound exactly. Have a look at: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=13344&hl= I haven't used this particular cab, but I have one I built myself that uses the same bass driver in a similar size box and it's plenty good enough for rehearsal with a very loud drummer, and for most pub gigs. For amplification I use an Ampeg SVP preamp and a 300W power amp. I get a lot of positive comments from audiences and from other bass players that use the rig. Alex definitely knows his stuff, drop him a line.
It shouldn't matter, as long as you're not overdriving the preamp too hard it'll be fine. Use your ears
Even if the preamp is overdriven to ridiculous levels you won't damage it.
That was one hell of a show. I remember GG and crew bringing the NEC show to the Colston Hall on a Christmas tour one year. It was huge and very entertaining. Shame he turned out bad. I auditioned for bassplayer for Jonathon King once as well .. Didn't get the gig ... Not pretty enough, I guess..
Excellent to see someone prepared to speak well of GG's music. It's depressing how history has been revised because of what he subsequently got up to.
By the way everyone, in case anyone is interested, I also have a genuine Musicman String Ray for sale. It was custom made just for me because I asked them really nicely and they said they would only do this for me as I am special. I also whispered the magic password, "Sound Control" which means I only had to pay the special £51 for it. Its made from a special wood that I hand picked which is called plastic. You can only get it in places like China so it's really rare. I also made sure that it was active but did not require a battery so to do away with the silly battery cover. The pickups are my own design that can't be found anywhere else and Ernie Ball loves them. I call them the "Sound Control Specials". So again, these pickups are really rare. The headstock is also special as I insisted that Ernie Ball did away with any information on the back of it. All other Musicman basses have this so this makes mine even more rare. Finally the bridge. this is so rare that I can't actually talk about it. Either way, I think your love this genuine String Ray bass thats really old and vintage yet also not that old and is pretty new. I have attached a photo but if you want anymore then I'll find an excuse not to post them. I can't be fairer than that. I'll start the bidding at £51.
Hm, you can spell and form coherent sentences...that sets you above your usual Ebay scammer. I'll bid.
I'm thinking of selling a plectrum. I'll post pics just as soon as I've found a suitable model to display it ;-) Edit: found her. As you can see the plectrum she's holding is a genuine original pre-CBS Music Man without frettles, ideal for plugged-in jazz or larrup metal.
