It looks like an ergonomic nightmare. What's to stop it rotating as you play it? Bloody heavy too. Still, if you have problems with your Precision floating away from you in the pool, this could be for you.
Put the drummer behind a plexiglass screen, then all you hear is what comes through the PA.
Better to put the neighbours and their soundmeter behind a plexiglass screen.
2. the have environmental health fitting a sound limiter this week which has to be set at 54db on the boundary of their property. This does mean it can be louder inside the marquee, but who knows how much.
TV (set at home level) at 1 m: approx. 60 dB Normal talking at 1 m: 40 – 60 dB Attenuation of canvas at bass frequencies: f***all dB Look on the bright side - you won't need to hump a big bass amp!

Hi, any idea where I can get a 3-way rocker switch for the mid frequency select on a 70s V4? Not sure if it's the same as the SVT. Thanks!
Hey, me and my friends want to record our jam sessions (preferably digitally), we don't mind sacrificing some quality and doing it 'on a budget'. Aside from the £200ish portable recorders, can anyone else suggest any other methods? The ideal thing would be something battery powered and digital that can carried around easily, are any of those mp3 players with a mic half decent? Or anything similar? We usually sit around in a room and play acoustically so we could just put something in the center of the room. Cheers, Oscar.
Whatever you decide on for a recorder (laptop? cassette? minidisk?), do try a PZM for a microphone (ideal for your situation; place the mic on the floor in the middle of the room). http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Module...414&DOY=3m7 Unbelievable price>performance ratio.
Do you reckon a Music Man pickup might fit?
Very unlikely. +1 for Andy at Wizard though; he'll certainly be able to improve on the original.
There's a difference between crap cables and decent ones but beyond that you're in the hands of the marketing men. Google "cable myths" for some interesting debunking of marketing claims.
+1. Also don't worry about having to play at absolute zero to keep the cable's resistance down. A kilometre of the crappest of crap cables won't have resistance high enough to have any effect on the sound. Capacitance, on the other hand, is very important with a passive bass. OBBM won't let you down.

What amps have 'growl' or just, suited to heavy rock/metal situations?
bremen replied to Adam.M's topic in Amps and Cabs
My experience in the amp field when it comes to guitars is massive, but on bass, well, i've never needed an amp before! and now i do... I want low end, but not too boomy, with a nice growl and a good top end when the bass is on its own. An inbuilt compressor is probably a must, i use one in my stealthplug set-up.
You seem to have decided on solid state; have you ruled out a Hiwatt or Ampeg valve amp? Heavier and more expensive (and you won't get a built-in compressor, but you're less likely to need one) but maybe the best way to get the classic rock sound. Or an Ampeg SVP preamp with a juicy solid state power amp, highly praised by a fair few players here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=215225 "...absolutely awesome. It covered the subtle sections admirably (even without a compressor) and then tore the face off everything in the rockier stuff. It has the real growl of the SVT's that I love, and bit through two guitars, keyboards, synths, and the drummer." Pretty much what I thought of it. -
Mr Sibs sold me a Precision body; described it accurately, packed it carefully and kept in touch. Good bloke, trust him.
I'm a Warwick player (a 2000 Streamer Std that is no longer made) and am on the lookout for a Thumb BO4. I personally would ascribe their current relative unpopularity to the whole post-punk revival trend at the moment - the Fender look is "cooler".
I had a very nice old Thumb NT, absolutely beautiful piece of wood - it just wasn't for me. Sure, Fenders are mass-produced and thrown together compared to Warwicks but for me a Precision (or copy) just hang right, and fit my hands. Soundwise my Warmoth with Quarter Pounder P and J pickups is just as good as the Thumb, just different.
More like a Harley Davidson Sportster. Ludicrously over-priced, under-performing, there's lots of Oriental copies, plus some specialist builders who make vastly improved versions of it, and it was overtaken by the competition decades ago.
I didn't even have to look at your sig to know you played a Warwick ;-)
And just to confirm the post responses again, CPC is the best source as listed. I did a considerable amount of testing of different sources of Piezos, and found not all cheap piezo's are the same (as was originally thought on Bills site)....The CPC unbranded came out on top of the cheap batches, and I would not suggest using anything else. WLE/Skytronic piezos are utter crap. 8 CPC piezos outstripped 12WLE piezos not just in SPL but massively in freq response. Dave
cheers for that clarification. Is there any way to be sure that the unbranded CPC units I get are the same as yours, ie any distinguishing markings?
Modding anything usually results in spending money. it's very unlikely you'll get it back again. I'm currently spending a "fortune" on modding a MIM Precision. The hobbyist in me has taken over. I only played the thing for 15 minutes before I took it apart. It's not been back together since. I already had a '62 reissue USA pickup (£60) I've (so far) bought... 1) Vintage domed knobs (£15) 2) Copper shielding tape and sheet (£10) 3) New pots and jack (£5) 4) New neck (£50) 5) Vintage wires and various caps (£5) 7) New TI flats (£30) 8) White pickup covers (£6) 9) New headstock logo (£6) 10) NOT bought yet - new tuners.
I have some new, boxed Gotoh tuners. Want them?
It's already cost me £360 and I've not replaced the black dots on the neck with mother of pearl or lacquered the neck yet - It'll come in just over £400. Price of an MIA. However - I'll have put it together myself, learned loads with it, have a bass I (hopefully) love, and will keep forever anyway. It's a bit like this computer I'm on. I built it myself. I know it inside out, all the creaks, whizzes and beeps. Cost me a fortune to build but was the fastest computer I'd ever used when it was new. Now's it's nearly 10 years old and still keeps up! Oh also - 11) A new soldering iron (£10)

Thanks for the tip off. I hope to go. I just looked at http://www.picturedrome.net/music_events.htm and whoever is booking the artists, has taste!
Indeed - and the guy writing the previews has an awesome gift for hyperbole, eg: the fabulous sounds of the Electric Light Orchestra....some of the best songs ever to be recorded onto vinyl.. .. I'd love to see LF in a small venue though. They used to be *so* funky, great to hear they still are :-)
Hmmm. I've often wondered this too. I'm considering trying my hand at a Warmoth build at some stage in the next twelve months or so and would like to add a decal or two, so I'm also interested in replies. Also, what's the best manner in which to get custom decals made? I'm not building a genuine Fender and won't pass it off as one of theirs so buying a Fender decal off the net isn't an option for me. How do you make / obtain custom decals, folks?
Warmoth's smoked chrome decals look great, stick like sh*t to a blanket and don't need lacquered over.
Thanks for that, i've already checked Thomann. As my post said, i was really looking peoples opinions and thoughts rather than simply alternatives...or at least alternatives with some explanitions as that will be useful information. J
Sorry, you did ask if anyone knew of any others around your price range. Which I do :-) I have no personal experience of acoustic basses, but I do have of Thomann's service - they will happily give you your cash back if you don't like an instrument, no questions asked.
