Hi guys, Kind of been toying with the idea of this for a while, but i'd like to get myself a 5 string acoustic bass that i can tune E-C for some jazz action! Now, i'm not looking to spend a stupid amount, so something like £300 is my ideal budget, but i'd consider others if they were worth it! So, my requirements are: 5 string E - C'able acoustic bass Shortest scale possible without lossing too much tone, preferably 34" Would need to have as low action as possible, or but good enough to get set-up well and what not! Sound half-decent Here's what i've spotted just now: Ibanez EWB205WNE-NT Crafter BA-580EQ Michael Kelly Club 5 Does anyone know of any others around my price range? And do any of you know anything about the above guitars? I'd rather have a decent low spec one rather that a shoddy high spec'd bass! Thanks in advance for your help and thoughts. At the boxtree in cambridge Its a charity gig for "special needs" kids. Would be cool if some of u ppl could make it and criticize my bass playing so i have a reason to drown my sorrows after Were a heavy rock group called "scream in unison" (god knows why in all honesty i need to talk to them bout that name) altho we dont scream i can promise you. Nor do we growl or any form of shouting... infact we have a very talented female singer So whos coming? (btw i dont know the time yet... yer were organised like that) Rik
Is that the pub down Napier Street, used to be called the Ancient Fluids? See you there!
Tweeters From CPC, theres where I got mine, and mostly everyone else does as well. Plus there in stock which is a bonus.
D'ya think? In my experience, this is what the bookers and bandleaders BELIEVE but is not necessarily what the audience want. What they usually want is to dance. A really grooving band can play almost anything as long as it has a back beat and drive. The endless piles of sh*te that most function bands play (including, if not especially, my own) are swallowed wholesale by the punters who, as a collective, love everything, however bad. One of the bands I occasionally do gigs with (£120 etc) are awful but the testimonials they get are glowing (I do the gigs as I like the people (and the money) but they are awful). The problem I have with function bands, frankly, is that, despite the fact that they have 100 years of hits to choose from, they all chose the same old b******s. Chaka Khan's 'Ain't Nobody' (all beat and no groove), 'Mustang Sally', 'Angels', the aforementioned 'Lady In Red', 'Killing Me Softly' - you know EXACTLY what I mean. This isn't about what the punters want. This is about doing the thing as superficially as possible and still getting away with it. Two rehearsals and you're gigging because you've all done it 1,000 times before. If it doesn't change soon, the music industry deserves to die.....
That's exactly what Zappa said about symphony orchestras and their repertoires ('warmed over' was the phrase he used). Almost word for word; just substitute 'Four Seasons' for 'Mustang Sally' and 'Moonlight Sonata' for 'Lady in Red'.
I expressed an interest in trying out for a local function band, not really my sort of thing but I figured it would be regular live work and little 'management' responsibility for a change. The band leader sent me their playlist, 64 songs, all classics I suppose (in an MOR way), but all new to me from a playing point of view. I'm going to have to pass on this opportunity, but feel like I should be using this list to get these songs under my belt for the future. The trouble is, how much of an idiot am I going to feel sitting there learning Lady In Red, Black Velvet and suchlike?
I feel much the same way, but you can learn a lot from learning other people's stuff whether you like it or not.
hello, Thanks bremen, I already sent an e-mail to Ampeg in parallel. Hope they'll answer. By the way - I live in Poland, so 1-800... might be expensive to call at, he he. Greetings Adam
Am I right in thinking 1-800 calls are free within the US? Maybe there's a US citizen on the list could make the call for you? PM me if you get no joy and I'll ask an American friend to do it.
At the end of the day, it's what suits each player. But as the thread starter said, Precisions are great all-rounders, and will be for decades to come, very likely.
I love Precisions. It'd be wonderful if they were still to be around in 50 years. Given that we all* expect oil to have run out by then, it's beginning to look like they'll outlive human civilisation. *ok, some of us gloomy f***ers anyway ;-)
yeah yeah yeah, ok. now we are all thinking this guy is stupid theres post everywhere about this. But... they do not help me very much. ok ok ok. leme tell you what kind of strings im looking for. I play a squire p bass (nooby i know) in a christian band. im looking for strings that give me a nice warm tone that just makes you feel good inside. I am willing to spend a little bit more than the cheepy strings people buy. give me advice and websites that might help me on my choice of strings. thank you very much and have a nice day. pls i insist have a nice day! :0
'a nice warm tone that just makes you feel good inside' So you don't want a growly, clangy agressive sound? Flatwounds, then. D'Addario Chromes Flatwound Bass strings are famed for their smooth feel and warm, mellow tone, it says here.

Does the sound of your bass make you go, "OH YES!"?
Does the sound of your bass make you go, "OH YES!!!"?? Just wondered how many of you really love the sound of a particular instrument you have or have had in the past?
Sometimes my bass and rig most definitely do. Other times I haven't changed anything and it's just really uninspiring. Maybe I suffer from Entwistle's Syndrome - a serious complaint where everyone else thinks it's an awesome sound but all the sufferer can hear is a bit of muddiness round the low C and a bit of plasticy resonance around the 6th to 9th frets on the G string, often leading to the delusion that he needs something other than a Precision. -
Can you replicate an ampeg sound to a decvent level without an ampeg?
Two possibilities: an Ampeg preamp (SVP-pro is the front end of the SVT) or a Pod. Neither sounds exactly like an all-valve SVT but both deliver some of its pleasing qualities and both, when matched with a solid state power amp, are a lot lighter and cheaper. The Pod is really versatile; the SVP is unfortunately discontinued (and well sought-after), and does a great job of making a filthy dirty noise (aka 'great bass sound'). hope this helps!

Who do you think sounds good? To be honest though, for everyone who loves Brand X string and would use no other, there's another player who'd prefer to string his bass up with barbed wire. Just type 'Rotosound' into the search engine and see how many people hate my favourite string ;-)
