Still think it's just the fact that they're single coil pups ....what do you mean when you say 'If it was due to the lack of humbucking in the pickups it'd get louder as the volume was turned up' ? Do you mean when he turns the amps gain or output up? If so, he hasn't said that this doesn't happen. Most of the time the most obvious answer is the correct one.
Because if it was because they were single-coil the noise wouldn't be dependent on the setting of the bass's volume controls. I may be wrong but the way I read Geek's post it was only a problem when they weren't fully on.
Peavey MAXX pre amp I've listed this before, but noone showed much interest - so i;m having another go. Its a Peavey MAXX bass preamp. Has two channels, one valve, one solid state. a variable crossover. lots of outputs and things. its rather cool - used it in a friends studio for a long time and it served well. Its rather scratched on the top and bottom, but once its in a rack it looks ok. Just shows its age i guess. Its been looked after anyway. But it must go. Not used it since about late 2005, so its sitting in a cupboard (on top of a Cambridge Audio Azur 340A if anyone's interested...). Would like something like another acoustic guitar or an ok bass, or some sort of strat or tele like thing (mind you, I'll be prepared to part with some cash too if something decent is about), or something else - possibly not even guitar related - who knows (dare i say that...?. Make me an offer. It really is a shame for it to be sitting unused. Cheers
How about a 7005 road bike frame, very good condition, with new carbon forks? Or an Eminence Kappa Pro 15LF driver, nearly new (<3 hours use)?

This is probably due to lack of screening. If it was due to the lack of humbucking in the pickups it'd get louder as the volume was turned up. As it is, the volume controls show a high impedance to the amp when turned down, allowing capacitive (ie through the air and the wood of the body) coupling. It's the same sort of effect as using a non-screened cable between bass and amp. Fully lining the cavity with copper tape, and grounding this tape to the metal plate, should fix it. Ground loops are not an issue when there are no heavy currents flowing. They are hugely significant in power amps and systems where multiple mains-powered devices are interconncted, but it really doesn't matter how the ground connections are arranged within a passive bass, so long as the connections are all there. The metal plate of the Jazz should be fine as a ground return (so long as the pot bodies are connected to the ground wires of the pickups and the bridge).

jazz bass bridge earth ...not connected! Am I going to fry?
iPhone foible, I don't seem to be able to edit posts on the Iphone so excuse me replying to my own post! I just wanted to add that I shielded the bass with adhesive copper as well and the buzz has gone as much as it ever does in my house, so it worked but am I going to fry?
No, you are not going to fry. The reason the bridge is grounded is to rduce hum, not a safety thing. -
SD Active PJ pickups for sale
bremen replied to Delberthot's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
Unfortunately due to becoming unemployed I'm absolutely skint so I am trying to get some money together. Seymour Duncan Pro Active PJ Pickups Originally bought for my Bass Collection 4 string but discovered that the pots are too short for rear routed control cavities. I intended to change the pots for longer shaft ones but never got round to it. Specs are here: http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...ndex.php?page=2
Is this what you're selling: http://www.billsmusiconline.com/seyapj-1.html ? You mention pots, what does that include? vol/vol/tone? cheers -
No amp = double bass!
Good point well made. If there was an amp though, it'd be the fretless. I'd have time to learn to play it in tune, and since there'd be no-one else there the intonation would not offend the ear.

What power amp to use wt/ Ampeg SVP PRO?
bremen replied to Break Neck Speed's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ive heard good things about crown. Second hand is defo a good option as i cant really afford a new one. Im still very tempted to go for the samson one i posted above for the price/power ratio. Its not bad looking either.
It'll sound as good as the Crown, and it's probably a bargain. 2200W isn't very much louder than 1400W. Thing about Crown though, you know they're going to be reliable. -
Don't like it. Looks quite dated to my eyes. What's that extra hole in the neck plate?
I think it's got a screw behind it, to tilt the neck instead of shimming it.

That's pleasingly minimal. Shame they didn't make it 50mm longer at the bridge end, so you could fit a standard adjustable bridge (and not worry about the strings not being long enough).
I wonder if it's got something to do with the wiring and caps.
Is that you applying for the research grant then? OK, I'll put in a quid if you try disconnecting all the wiring associated with the J pup and comparing the basses. I have a Wizard J pup that I *might* put in my FrankenP but I'm wary about disturbing its P-ness. tee hee, I said P-ness ps Who's that in your avatar, Tee? Looks like a right yob ;-)
For me, they don't really ever sound completely like a P does even with the J totally rolled off.
Why do you think this would be? Could it be the magnetic effect of the second pickup on the strings? Surely cutting the recess for the pickup wouldn't make that much difference? Mine was never 'just' a P to start with, actually it's a Warmoth 'dinky P' so it's hard to say whether it'd sound like a P without the J. Maybe I should try adding a J to a real P, just in the interests of science. Where do I apply for the research grant?
I'm a Precision lover because i like its fatter tone (compared to JBs i've owned), thicker neck and general aesthetics. However, i miss the Jazz growl, which would work better for me on some tunes. Amazingly, i haven't actually played a PJ configured bass (just one or the other). So, i'm wondering, would a PJ pup config on a Precision help get that bridge end growl and add it to the P's pick up, or does it have to be a Jazz? I'm simply looking to add a bit of jazz growl to a Precision sound. So i guess this is one for all you PJ owners.
I have a bass with Seymour Duncan P and J pickups and yes, it can sound very like Geddy Lee's Jazz. I'd describe it as a 'snarl' rather than a 'growl' though.
i use to use Warwick EMP strings and they were great and lasted ages!!
YMMV, as they say: I tried them once and they didn't sound as bright as Warwick Red Labels to start with, and didn't seem to last any longer.
Everyone focusses on rhythm! And rightly so, too! Few of us seem to consider guitar/bass interplay. I personally like the way some "String Sections" manage to avoid stepping on each others' toes, as it were. To wit; Dave Navarro / Eric Avery (Jane's Addiction) John Frusciante / Flea (RHCP) Andy Summers / Sting (The Police) Larry Lalonde / Les Claypool (Primus) Gary Sanford / Graham Maby (Joe Jackson) Note that I didn't include Navarro / Flea RHCP combo. They are both super in their own right, but fell all over each other on the "One Hot Minute" album. C'mon! Gimme some more!
Wilco Johnson and...who was the bass player in Dr Feelgood? Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn Pete and John!
I have various basses with two pickups, Three have a master volume, a balance and common controls (or two), but my most recent, a Westone quantum has a volume for each pickup and a common tone pot. My opinion at this stage is 'why would anyone want to have separate volumes for each pickup', rather than master volume and a blend. As far as I can see having two volume controls just makes it difficult to adjust your volume without altering your tone, but I guess it must have some advantage or no one would do it that way? I'm thinking of changing the Quantum to a Vol-Balance configuration - should I do do it or not?. All thoughts and comments gratefully received.
If you want to use both pickups simultaneously: a blend control in centre position will attenuate each pickup equally, and (unless you're running an onboard preamp) you'll lose top end due to the capacitance of the cable. You'll only be able to get the 'full volume' sound with one or the other pickup on full.
£112 + £9 postage final price!! Amazingly expensive! I could import one brand spanking new with the machine heads from the USA for less than that!...and I wouldn't drill through the f***ing fingerboard when I fit it... Looks like I'm getting one from the states then
That's a ridiculous price. Why not buy this http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=31416&hl= and sell the body and electrics on Ebay - you'd probably get 150 quid for them from the guy who paid £121 for a 'slight seconds' neck.

Advice please? Calling all fellow fenderites and others of course
bremen replied to foxthebiker's topic in Bass Guitars
How about this then.... I may get the opportunity of buying the late Patrick Waite's of Musical Youth's Fender Precision. Thing is, how much would you pay for it? I have little info yet except: It comes complete with a metal ally flight case Bridge ashtray It's a 70's Precision in what looks like custom shop red (as played in "pass the dutchie on the left hand side) here: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xt6V3Ic72nE It has a fair amount of gig damage to it, plenty of cigarette burns on the neck and plenty of road damage to the body. The neck has a kink at the nut which may truss out, not sure. The board is a rosewood and the frets have the appropriate amount of wear on them for the year and usage. The pickguard has a small break in it under the jack plug and that piece is missing. I haven't played it as my friend needs to prep it. the tuners have some main shaft nuts missing (2). This is a tough one, I like it, it's a no brainer that it is valuable but what does everybody else think? I can assure all that it really was Patrick's, I have confirmation on this. Any of your thoughts would be very appreciated....(I'll try and get some pics soon)
Sounds like a mess. Do you want it to play, or to hang onto for a few years and sell for stupid money on Ebay?
