Up till recently I was thinking that my musicman didn't sound as good as it used to and I was finding there was far too much string noise, especially when I was recording. I have used a few different makes strings but mainly D'Addario xls for years and had bought a set of elites as I needed some new strings in a hurry for a gig and that was all I could get and they sounded pretty good for a while. I just bought some DR silver stars which seemed kind of expensive but I wanted to try something different. They are a massive improvement on the elites to my ears and I have no problem with too much string noise now. They have a deep, dark tone relative to other strings. I'll be interested to see how long they keep their tone. The DRs might not suit everyone, especially if you want a really bright tone but if you're not totally happy with your bass tone I would recommend trying out some different makes of string to your usual ones. It might take a while to find the right ones for your bass but it might be a lot cheaper than buying a new bass or amp! On the cheaper end of the scale try the nickel bass strings from the bulk strings section at www.juststrings.com they are pretty good for the price.
They want more for shipping than they do for the strings! Any European dealers? LordOfTheStrings don't do DR, unfortunately.
 2.
Other bands being slow or faffing about. That being when sound checking or over playing their slot... I don't like being delayed.
Sound guys that stick a mic in the bass drum and an overhead over the kit then mix it up with the vocals and put it all through a pair of graphic equalisers, a puny power amp and a pair of 'full-range' speakers on poles. For a pub gig. Bands that insist that the sound guy sticks a mic in the bass drum and an overhead over the kit then mix it up with the vocals and put it all through a pair of graphic equalisers, a puny power amp and a pair of 'full-range' speakers on poles. For a pub gig.
 3.
Funk... was originally used to describe something that had a certain indescribable feeling, the word is in fact a description of dirty and smelly. Many types of music can be funky.
Say yeah!

 7. Got a beaut Precision neck from Gary today. Packed well, shipped the minute my cheque cleared and included a cheque to cover the difference in postage (I guessed £20, cost £10). Cheers!

 10.
The F2B preamp is still the best I've heard.
It's a direct steal of the preamp section of a Fender Bassman. Yet again, "Leo was right!"

 13.
For years I got by with the two Hohner headless basses, the fretless and the 5-string, which both date from the 80s. The Stick purchase in 2000 was a clear-cut case of biting off more than I could chew, and I finally sold it last month. Last year I felt that there was a good chance I would be gigging again, and could use something more modern-yet-normal, hence the Tune. Now all I need is an amp, and a car to transport it and 3 basses in, and a license that would allow me to drive a car, and lessons on how to drive...
John Entwistle never had one. A driving licence that is. Did you get the Hohners because they're easy to carry on a bike? That's why I got mine :-)
 14.
Please dont shoot me! I am a fan of John Entwhistle and The Who... but I really think that solo is p*sh, it makes no sense? It sounds so trebley. The active electronics are so thin and overdriven that you cant make the notes out or any real 'scale/key/structure' he attempting to put together. Sorry John not a goody for me! Watching the wont be fooled again video got me thinking?? I wonder if Harry sheare based his character 'Derek Smalls' from Spinal Tap on John Entwhistle? andy
Also a long, long time fan of the man, and I didn't much like it either. I don't think he's ever bettered his playing on Live at Leeds, or had a better tone (from a Precision). Won't Get Fooled Again: I like that because he's almost as sloppy as me without drums and guitar to hide behind! But hear the same take with the whole band from that dvd and it's spine-tingling towards the end.
 15.
Also makes it easier for a sound man if you use one amp. Expecting him to blend two mic'd or DI'd rigs to your taste can be a bit hit and miss as they're *often* concentrating more on vocals and guitars than the finer points of our chosen instrument!
Novel use of the word 'often' there ;-)
 16.
How to confuse the p*ss out of your potential buyer. I gave up reading this description after the 2nd read through! 17.
If I get a compressor, and set the ratio to infinite, and set the attack to instant, then I have a limiter. Am I wrong?
You're absolutely correct...you don't have to set the attack to instant though, the definition of a limiter is a compressor with (approaching) infinite gain reduction over threshold. It's still a limiter if it's got a slow attack, though limiters are mostly used with fast attack.

 21.
With all due respect,I'm am going to say that I honestly believe that John Entwhistle is the most over-rated bassist(sorry neilb). Based on the fact that he was voted 'Bassist of the millenium',automatically makes him-in my opinion- seriously over-rated.
He's certainly one of the most mis-spelled bassists in history ;-) But he's definitely one of the giants on whose shoulders many of us stand, and the inspiration to countless players who otherwise wouldn't have realised just how exciting bass could be. 'Bassist of the milennium' is silly, I agree. 'anything' of the milennium is, really, isn't it. That solo in My Generation - if you could put it into words you'd want it on your gravestone.
 22.
Brass will change your open string sound a bit in theory, and graphtec is very brittle, so you have to make sure you file it to just the right size, otherwise you'll have same problem again.
Thanks, could do without brittleness. Brass seems most likely.
 23. Ladies, gentlemen. I've just broken the nut on my P; the bit below the G string has disappeared. I don't know how it happened, I wasn't playing it at the time, [Homer]it was like that when I got here [/Homer]. This is the second time I've broken a nut (last time was on another bass, just above the B, maybe because the string was too thick for the slot). Anyway. These were corian as originally fitted. Any thoughts on what I should replace them with, something a bit tougher? I've been offered something called Graphtech that claims to be low friction hence easier to tune. Or brass. Are there any issues with brass? Thanks!

I've just watched an inspiring TV programme about the 'oo, reminded me how much I love the Ox. I really, really shouldn't buy the bass though. Not even slightly. Gary, you have PM.
 25.
Well, heres my experience of certain annoyances from past bands. 1- Band leader would adjust the volume on my amp whilst in mid song, up and down up and down. This was a definate no no
Were you in The Fall?
