Bit of advice required here. I've always played Ric's, but am possibly after a Precision just for practice, the odd rehearsal and maybe the odd gig as well to mix 'n' match. I've a minimal knowledge of these basses - budget-wise, I'm not into spending huge amounts (save that for my Rics!), so as cheap as poss, within reason as it's got to be good enough! I'm just after one that offers good playing, and that big sound (re my other Steve Hanley Fall-related post). Also, where is a good place to buy? My internet searches yield very little. It must be easier to find one! I noticed on the poll that there is loads of Fender owners on here, so it must be the best and most informed place to ask. Please help!
Recent posts suggest that there's a huge amount of variation in quality of Precisions, that there's no such thing as a good year or a bad year, that Crafted In Japan models are (on average) good value and quality, that some made-in-Mexico are better than some made-in-America for less cash, that some Squiers are better than Fenders, that you should definitely try before you buy. Then there are all the opinions on replacement pickups... good luck!
TBH I think the Gibson -v- Paul Reed Smith case has killed instrument copyright cases. The issue at the US courts was about potential buyer confusion at the point of sale. Gibsons's own Counsel agreed that only an idiot would confuse them at point of sale and so PRS ultimately won. Gibson's argument that a person at the LA Arena might not be able to tell the difference between a Les Paul and a PRS Single Cut from the back row carried no weight at all. I'm sure someone else will have another go at some point though - but lets remember Spector is still a relatively small company - Fender / Gibson have the money to try it on. Yamaha have been making 'copies / tributes' of the SG for years and their Pacifica's are closer to Strats than the PRS was to the Les Paul... but of course as a company Yamaha is HUGE - much much bigger than Gibson or Fender and could pay for litigation with the Xmas party fund. Spector employees may well think that Warwick is not acting honourably... but my view is... test it in court or shut up.
Where does that leave the Fender headstock design - last I heard certain manufacturers (Mighty Mite among them) were 'licensed by Fender' and others had to slightly change the design?
+1 for Stephen Hanley. Surprised 'Bremen' hasn't dropped in on this thread yet to pay respect to the mighty Fall. As well as precisions, over the years he's also used a Peavey T-40 & a Stingray, but he always had a thunderous sound live usually, through a cranked up SVT. IMHO his duration in the band was definitely their glory years. my favourite album for his playing & input is 'Middle Class Revolt' Great track this one: Cheers
Hello! I saw them many times and he used various gear including Trace and Ampeg, and always a Precision (though I have seen a vid of him using a MM). I suspect he didn't much care what he used but he always got a great big raw sound. Yes, MCR is one of my favourites for his sound, playing and influence. Just about every track. Smif was quoted as saying 'if it was me and me granny on bongoes it'd still be the Fall' but Shanley's influence on MCR is huge. Love Hip Priest&Kamerads too.

Fane 15" bass cabs really cheap....£30 BIN
He also has some dual concentric 2 x 12's at £40.00 BIN so £70.00 for a full set of PA speakers, bargain
I don't think these are genuine dual concentrics, ie with a tweeter behind the magnet. I think they are ordinary 12" drivers with 'whizzer' cones. Not that the seller is dishonest, just mistaking the terminology. -
They used to be below the strings because back then, bassists played "thumb-style" rather than "finger-style".
I was surprised to see a Youtube clip of Robbie Shakespeare using his thumb. I'd always assumed he used his fingers at the end of the fretboard, like 99.9% of reggae players I've seen. But then, he isn't any ordinary reggae player. Salut!
Hi I've decided to part with this cool little box. Its in 100% immaculate condition and has only been used to test that it works - which it does very well. As I'm not using it I can't justify keeping it since I'm now seeking a compressor. Price is £50 plus £5 for postage. Would definitely be interested in a swap or PX for a good compressor... BBE Opto Stomp in particular. It looks like this:
What does it do?

And a 64 page manual (as if it takes that many pages to teach someone to play guitar...). -
I've listened to a number of the videos. To be honest, what I hear makes me feel that rather than having a distinctive voice of its own, the Stingray is a bass that covers a number of different sounds and sounds good in all of them. Perhaps its because I'm listening to it nowdays when there are a lot of different basses out there that have followed on from the Stingray. And that the Stingray has become one of the major sounds that bass designers either copy or "cover" when designing instruments. Am I missing something? (Entirely possible). Is this wrong?
You could say the same of the Precision: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GWsJdnDEzGI or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dV2X_Ek2bms...feature=related
I've also had a similar "rattle" sometimes, but this is duff strings (normally the E) where the windings are coming apart from the core, inside the string.
I just experienced that for the first time, on a brand new string (Warwick red label). Bloody annoying.
Bugger that, mate. Get some WD40 on it. It's always worked for me! Squirt a little tiny bit on the pot on the outside of the amp and then turm it all of the way back and forth several times. The crackle will quickly reduce and then stop in matter of seconds. I would guess that the Maplins stuff is chemically the same but don't know that for a fact.
More likely to be isopropyl alcohol.
Sorry this is a duplicate post, but I just realised my question might fit better in this area of the forum (and the more help I can get the better): Hi everyone. Before you ask I did attempt a search on this topic and didn't find anything directly relevant to my query. Basically I have a couple of old Marshall bass amps with scratchy/crackly (actual words?) pots and I want to get this sorted. After searching this site I did find out about a product called Servisol, and someone else mentioned getting some Maplin Switch Cleaner to spray on the pots, but I'd still like a little more info. If I purchase one of these products do I simply spray them on the outside of the volume/EQ knobs (should I try to remove the plastic knobs first before using) or do I actually need to do something internally to get rid of the problem? I also read how the dust/dirt can build up from lack of use (I have a feeling these amps were stored unused for long periods of time), and some people have simply twisted the knobs frequently to get rid of the crackling sound. Does this really work? I'd be happy to remove the knobs if this would allow better access and lead to improved results, though I'm not sure if I should simply try to pull them off or not (I'm somewhat worried about damaging them)? Any suggestions as to how I can make my playing/adjusting less crackle-y would be (as ever) GREATLY appreciated! If you think I need to seek a professional to sort out this problem, then any recommendations would also be appreciated (I'm based in the Midlands/Birmingham area). Cheers!
You'll need to get inside the chassis and at the actual pots. Once you're in there you'll be able to see where the active parts of the pots are. Just squirt a bit of Servisol inside and turn the knobs a couple of times. Yes, sometimes just twiddling the knobs can help.
If you are on a tight budget, but really want the valve tone, then consider an SVP preamp and a budget poweramp. The SVP is tremendous and is much lighter (even with a poweramp) than the SVT2 or SVT4. The sound rivals that of the SVT2. Its quality, but at a reasonable price.
+1 No longer manufactured though, as far as I know.
hey guys. I want to start playing some modern Dub Style bass. Much in this sort of vein of Dub trio. Which is a mixture of Dub Rock and metal. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dqHV3UroHYs&...feature=related (skip to 30 odd second mark) Or Matisyahu. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hip2i9yHZ38&...feature=related Anyway, I find jazz basses not my cup of tea. And i dont want to have to get this dubby effect with alot of bass pedals. So what basses would be suited to this task? Thinking along the lines of, G&L L 1000, Telecaster mudbucker bass. Etc. I need something for around 300-500. Preferably non pointy or ridiculous. I have a bunch of Musicmans but the bridge bucker just is not dubby enough on its own. Also i am not a fan of Jazz basses. Also Flats or Rounds? (Considering i play VERY light Rounds and have never played flats) Rob. PS, I am not looking for an old school sound. very much hifi/dub.
Hey, good stuff! I'd not heard them before. I'd say the sound was mostly in the fingers; played lightly, over the neck. Right enough the pickup on a Ray is too close to the bridge for that warm heavy sound. I have a 5 string with 2 Ray pickups and I use the neck pickup for that sound...you probably don't want to mutilate your bass though.
