Music performance volume and EU regulations
bremen replied to Paul Cooke's topic in General Discussion
is it 85dB strict limit, or 85db average or what? You'd think 90 would be ok for gigs? Maybe not.
I might be misunderstanding this, but doesn't the legislation compel managers to protect the staff's hearing by issuing them with appropriate safety equipment, ie earplugs? I mean, road drills and aircraft aren't banned; similarly loud amplification isn't. I hope I'm right. The figures are average, not peak. -

or get us to wear earplugs, which seems sensible. -
Some passive pups have very hot outputs. I believe the 1/4lbs are considered to be fairly hot
yeah I use 1/4lbs on my PJ and they're not far behind an active EMG-P. I never have to go anywhere near 11 on the amp.
"How to make a presentation"
'This presentation is in two parts. In the first part I explain that it's going to be in two parts...and I haven't quite decided what's in the second part yet'. Or: Is Downloading depriving Musicians of a living? Does Humour Belong in Music? Who wrote Whiter Shade of Pale? or look back through the topics discussed here and find the most contoversial, probably one where BBC gets challenged to a duel by an offended party ;-)
what about 1/4 to speakon. Where does that sit?
One end bombproof, one end slightly fragile.
I think that you are paying for a lot more than the difference between having a jack and a speakon Dont forget that speakons are a relatively recent development and before that everyone used jacks. The real big advantage is you cant use a speaker lead for signal and vice versa.
I wouldn't use a speaker lead for signal, it's not screened! And I wouldn't be confident using a signal lead for a high power speaker (except in a dire emergency). Speakons are much tougher and more reliable than jacks.

The funkiest groove I have seen on YouTube for a while
bremen replied to chardbass's topic in General Discussion
I watch this clip almost every other day- the guy is grooving like a monster. It seems this Chicago church have some great musos playing there. I think this is the ending of a piece called Joy to the World? There is another clip somewhere with another playing the same song and he interprets it differently. This is like a cross between Bootsy playing Sexmachine and Anthony Jackson. Awesome groove! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_KuD0AjWdE
Even *my* bitter, cynical little heart was warmed by that. -
I was reading some reviews on this particularly compressor (on Harmony Central as you do...) Sorry to dampen the mood on the thread chaps but Ive been reading that this compressor does have an issue of "clicking." Anyone come across this? Or are these just vicious rumours Josh
That'd be less of an issue with bass than stuff like vocals/acoustic instruments I'd have thought.
Plugged my bass (P-Bass copy) into the amp on friday at band practice and it was buzzing really loudly, i could barely hear what i was playing over the noise. Eventually worked out it was the tone pot, I always have it on full but the only way to stop the noise was to turn it completely down. Had 2 gigs on the weekend where i had to play with it completely down, luckily managed to get it sounding alright by fiddling with the amp's eq. Need to fix the bass now but I'm thinking as the tone is always on full (I play punk) would it work just to wire the bass without a tone control? If so could someone please find a wiring diagram. Thanks
Yes, just snip one of the wires on the cap. I don't use tone controls on any of my basses.
I tried one in Manson's in Exeter once, as long as you kept below the 7th fret it was reasonably in tune
Basses have more than 7 frets?
Delighted with my svt3pro - the pre/power tubes make such a difference.
fwiw the SVT3 pro is a SVP Pro valve preamp with a 450W solid state power amp hanging off its output. Might be better off finding a SVP Pro and getting a ss power amp elsewhere, would probably be cheaper and a bit more versatile. I used a SVP with a 400+400 power amp and it sounded damn fine.
Not I. My 8 cu ft horn loaded sub provides all that I need and all that She Who Must Be Obeyed will tolerate
Ah, but that's the beauty of Snr Royal's enormous horn - it's under the floor, out of the jurisdiction of She Who Must Be Obeyed.
I'd love to have a blast on this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ozark-Bass-Resonator...1QQcmdZViewItem
A friend has the guitar version and it's got a unique sound, hardly like an 'ordinary' guitar. I'd love to hear the bass version. Anyone going to bid on it?
Book us for your next one and we'll play it (floor fills with the two families fighting over what really killed the UK coal industry )
My *next* wedding! OK mate, you got it. Could you also learn 'too drunk to f***' by the Snivelling Shits and Mozart's Horn Concerto - between them that should please both families.
What I'm really talking about here is when someone says "play something for us" and you reach for the bass ...
I'm with Jake and Bilbo in that when anyone says that I reach for my coat rather than my bass, and like the majority here the closest I like to get to a solo is a stripped-down groove for a few bars. Which the civilians do tend to enjoy. That steeleye span tune though, I'd love to hear it at a wedding. But then I like a bit of politics in my music.
I tend to swap about a bit, but I always seem to come back to stainless steel Elites in 45-105. I love the tone (both on my old Precisions and on my Warwick Corvette), price and they last a reasonable time. Rotosounds I love the tone of when they're new but they go dead too quick and I find them really rough on the fingers. I've had Elixirs on the Warwick since last Summer and they still sound good as new (although the coating is really shredded and looks awful), but they don't give me "my tone". Mostly punk/rock played fingerstyle but occasional pick and (very poor) slapping.
I too love the sound of new Roto 45-105 on my PJ, and 'Mostly punk/rock played fingerstyle but occasional pick and (very poor) slapping' describes what I do pretty well. Have you tried Fast Fret? makes them a lot more comfortable and probably extends the life. I've never found strings that keep their tone for long. Are rotos known for going off quickly?
http://www.royaldevice.com/custom.htm
'The real maximum power fed to both subhorn measured with an oscilloscope at the highest musical peak was 6 watts per channel when a pair of tube amps were used to drive the 16 LAuras, while up to date the electric power can reach 60 watts per channel using the 4 x 50watts/ch BLU EYES amps. In this conditions, peak levels are much higher and undistorted than any live concert at all. Walls and ceiling seems to fall down, but fortunately don't. The sound pressure is concentrated at the listening point and stopped by a 2 meters high woolglass anechoic wall on the back of the listening position. We should remember that the total diaphragm surface of the woofers is 2.89 square meters (8.67 square feet) and with the drivers horn loaded (not direct radiating), distortion at 60 watts is practically negligible. If for instance the real maximum rated power (6400 watt) would be used the pressure level would reach 160 dB, but I wonder who could survive. Not even the house built in steel & concrete maybe would stand up.' Which of us, if we had the cash, wouldn't want to do that to our basement!
I find that they [Ampegs] colour the sound way too much for my liking, distracting from the tone and sound of the bass itself, I also feel that the tone is a little more muffled and less tansparent than I like, no matter how I play with the EQ (and I've tried many combinations) I've never found something that I'm happy with. I prefer a much more clear and transparent tone that retians the original charecteristics of the bass itself (what I mean by HiFi),
Yes, that's what I understand folk to mean when they say HiFi. And yes, Ampegs do colour the sound. I like that colour, suits my current bass and my style, but I have played other basses and other styles where it just wouldn't have been right. I've never found the EQ setting on an Ampeg to stop it sounding like an Ampeg; the thing to do is find the setting that makes it sound most like one. If you see what I mean.
Hi folks, Playing a lot of fretless at the moment. When I practice I like to play along with a tune with a groovy line that repeats itself through the tune a fair bit, so I can elaborate and play around with it. Anyone got any ideas? Simple, groovy lines. Cheers ped
DJ Food, Coldcut, they use a lot of fun double-bass grooves. http://www.ninjatune.net/home/

Makes it a bit harder to play fast or in time but I love that NASTY sound. I'll get the timing and the sound right one day...
He is indeed! If you like Familyman, you should definitely check out some of the other great reggae bassists like Flabba Holt, Robbie Shakespeare and Boris Gardiner. I'm having a mini reggae renaissance right now and have had 'Heart of the Congos' (which is mostly Boris Gardiner on bass, with some Geoffrey Chung) on repeat play in my car for the last few days... that and Steel Pulse's 'Handsworth Revolution' (Ronald McQueen plays some great bass on that).
Yeah, Handsworth Revolution is a feast of sumptuous bass.
