Most PA systems will have high pass filters set to 40hz in order to prevent cone damage and save amp power for the frequencies you can hear instead. I saw an article for a 4x24" infrabass PA cab that went down to 16hz. The sound engineers who used it were confused because they could see the cones moving, but could not hear anything. As Stated above, It is pointless trying to produce frequencies that low, because no one except mating crocodiles can hear them. Frequencies between 20-40Hz will add lots of mud and mush to your tone, but wont make the low notes sound any clearer. Most of the sound that you actually hear in a note with a fundamental below 50hz will be the second harmonic at the octave above. The bass cabs I built with PD drivers, which also double as subs for my PA system, are capable of 20Hz which I tested with tone when I tuned them. I cut anything below 50Hz when I use them in my (6 string tuned to low bass stack, because It cleans up the tone with very little noticeable loss in low end.
indeed - at frequencies that low the room is as important as the box, so it's only outdoors that it's going to be practical to hear 32Hz.
Hi guys, Whilst scouring the internet for control cavity mods I recently came across a really novel idea: the TBX tone control.
odd - calls for a 82.5K resistor and a 22.5uF capacitor, neither of which are standard values. A 22uF cap would completely kill the signal from a pickup anyway (0.047uF is the usual high-cut).
In most instances, this wouldn't be particularly useful on a bass, but it got me thinking - seeing as one can cut treble or bass, wouldn't it be possible to create a passive mid cut control, either by modifying the cap / resistor values on the TBX or by using a Push / Pull tone pot (with various gubbins attached to it) to switch between standard treble cut and mid cut? There's a similar topic on Talkbass which mentions the BluEQube used by Dingwall, but I'd really like to have a go at doing this myself. Any ideas?
If you put an inductor in series with a capacitor in series with the 'tone' pot that'll cut mids. The frequency at which this happens depends on the values of the inductor and the cap. If you're interested I can do some calculations. It will also depend very much on the inductance and DC resistance of the pickup(s). Not sure how to calculate that. Yes, it would be a simple matter to use a switch to select topcut/midcut.

Shuker "Pub/Stealth Bass" - An All Black 33" Jazz Bass
bremen replied to eude's topic in Build Diaries
Well I've just done gone and put down the deposit on my next Shuker Bass. ... Very very excited about this! It's fairly simple so hopefully I'll have it for some of our summer gigs! Any thoughts, comments, questions? Cheers, Eude
Yes, tell me about 33" scale and how it affects the sound and string tension? Do they move around more? I thought I was satisfied with the guitars I have but this guy's reputation has got me curious. -
Just after we booked the dates for recording, we parted ways with our guitarist who was impossible to work with. Our reviews at the time were pretty much stating that we sounded like killswitch engage / machine head . ... Cheers to everyone who has given their advice, im looking forward to putting it into practice. Dan
Yay, sounds like losing that guitarist was the best thing that could have happened. Hope the session goes well!
If I get forwarded to me one of the malicious "cancelling" emails I suspect the Railway Inn may have been resposible for sending, has anyone any idea how I can reveal the IP address of the PC from which the email was sent? I havve some software avaiable to me which will enable me to trace the IP address to a Posal Code, which will suffice for our purposes, but I still need some advice on how to get the actual IP info. Any and all help gratefully received as always.
I don't think it would be an over-reaction to go to the police.
I was given this Westfield Bass broken. I've fixed and it works fine. I love the true P bass sound or a similar Thick chunky thud of a bass. What would you change? The bass doesn't stand me in for a penny and at the end of the days it's a cheap bass so it aint gonna sound great. l
Nice work! That must be really satisfying. It might sound great, you never know. Try a new pickup, they're easy to fit and if it doesn't turn it into a great bass you can always take it out and put it in the next one. I like Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. Others hate them.
The desk is a Behringer (yes, I know!!!!). We,ve tried using the inserts before to patch to an RME Fireface 800 for recording and it plays havoc with the levels. Could be worth trying again tho. Don't really want to spend the cash on a "proper" splitter box, as for the same money we could be a used analogue desk with plenty of sends.
£32.78?
Really hope someone has got the technical savvy to help me out with this one - Our band has grown and our mixer gets more and more cranky, to the point where we no don't have enough aux sends to supply monitor mixes for all. Question is can we just use splitter cables from the desk end of the snake to drive our FOH mixer AND a second monitor mixer? What would happen when phantom power is sent from the FOH mixer? Would it fry inputs on the second mixer? Are there other issues? Please help because we don't want to spend £200 on splitters only to find it doesn't work.
http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_sp3_splitter.htm If the phantom power is sent from the FOH mixer, connect the FOH mixer to the 'link out' and the mic to the 'link in'. Connect the monitor mix to the 'isolated balanced output'. The phantom power won't appear on this output, it being transformer isolated.
I was just wondering, specifically on more expensive basses, say £500 upwards, if you're willing to spend more to be able to test out a bass in a shop (and walk away with it), or save, by purchasing blind (a possible gamble) over the internet. Personally i don't mind spending a little more, to be able to test it etc. What are your preferences/thoughts? And how much more would you be prepared to pay over net prices. Edit: hmm, i thought i was in the General Bass discussion. Perhaps it's more suited there mods. Sorry.
Maybe slightly OT, but I like to buy from Thomann not because they're cheaper but because of their 3 year guarantee. If my local shop offered that I'd be prepared to pay at least another 10%. As far as basses goes, I wouldn't buy one without trying it unless it was very cheap.
But you are using a crossover - not putting the same signal through different cabs.
ah, OK, I see. Yes, putting the same signal through different drivers could sound bad. Not necessarily though, you might get lucky if one has a weak mid and the other a peak just where the one is missing. Active crossover is nice.
I used to stand stage right for purposes of keeping time with hi hats, but recently I've been standing stage left for the same reasons as Phaedrus above - it's easier to check your playing as well and make eye contact with the rest of the band.
I used to do the hi-hat thing but for some reason I've swapped for the band I'm in now. Thinking of swapping back this Saturday so I can put my rig in the corner (that's just the way the stage is). The Ox used to stand stage left. I wonder if that's significant?
TBH it depends on so many variables and between different manufacturers it is really hard to give a definitive answer. Up until recently the choice was really between 10's and 15's. Some players said they preferred 10's because 15's were too slow to keep up with their playing but that was BS - he was going through the PA anyway and that was not all 10's. It is simply not true that a 1x15 will always have more low end than a 2x10, and trying to reproduce the difference in frequency response will suck all of the power from your amp. 1x15 will often have a hole in the upper mid frequency response between the bass driver and the tweeter. Mixing speaker sizes is not recommended by speaker guru's (or is that nerd's) but I cant find the references. 12's are making a bit of a comeback as well.
I'd agree with all the above (I'm 75% nerd, 26% guru and -1% mathematician by the way) but I don't see what's wrong with mixing speaker sizes? After all, you're going through the PA anyway and that's not all one speaker size ;-) fwiw I use a 15 and an 8 with an active crossover, with an added 15 for bigger stages.
and why is there a control cavity cover on the back????? it was rear-routed for controls and someone's put a scratchplate on it since.
Yet another Ebay fraud. I'd ask the seller for a serial number and grass him up if he couldn't provide a plausible one, but recent experience with Ebay has robbed me of the will to live; and frankly, my dear, I can't be arsed.
You get £32 tax free if its a gift...just mark accordingly. Customs opened my SX basses thinking I'd pulled a fast one... there are loads of scams - lower declared value, labelling as a commercial sample, prototype product...not that I've used any of these. I know of people that have bought £300 lenses from Hong Kong and not paid any duty by declaring as a prototype.
You should also (legitimately) declare the wholesale value, not retail. So that's it halved again.
Loads of great advice here, thanks a lot guys!! Hmmm.... the switch sounds a nice idea actually. I'm pretty fond of having a master volume on my basses, but I don't like the idea of losing the tone with a blend like that, I want to make the most of my shiny new pickups!! The only drawback with the switch might be if there's a jump in volume between the P and J. Anyone know if there'd be much of a difference in output level between a Wizard Thumper and an 84?
I used a switch for a while but it became crackly. I think this is probably because it was a Maplin cheapy and the signal from pups is low. A switch with gold plated contacts wouldn't crackle.
