My lady loaned me the cash to get a 5 string to try out - on the understanding that after a few months gigging with it and seeing if it worked I'd either sell it on and keep my 4 string or sell the 4 and keep the 5. So decision day came and she got all 'hurt' that I was selling the 5 (I'm guessing because she loaned me the cash and wanted to be a part of the my music side of my social life) yet she constantly complained when it was in the flat and referred to it as the beast. Funny how perception can be so different from the reality. Still for those of us that have been with our girlfriend, partner, bird etc etc I think we have an unspoken understanding that this is what we do and they suffer/enjoy accordingly On the plus side my lady is finishing a Masters so she enjoys the free time while I bang out the tunes. Win win as she is beautiful, understanding and intelligent!

Hey BC Brigade My old house mate found out her work buddy was a producer/hip hop nut who gave me this track to add some bass to. This is a rough sketch with a couple of timing issues *ahem* but I think its the final version Im gonna bounce back to him as my effort (once I have re-recorded it that is!) Before I do so I'd really appreciate feedback and constructive criticism. Its been played on a P bass with the tone right off, flatwound strings and I was going for my idea of a '70's tone'. I have added some EQ via garageband for what I think is a punchy, yet fat, tone. I know the mix isn't that great but he'll be getting a raw file to add and mix down as he sees fit so from that aspect its not an issue - this is just a quick sketch. I felt the original track was repetitive, but not in a bad way - its a great track- so I wanted to try and create three distinct sections playing something different on each pass kinda thing- a riff, a solid line and then something with a bit of movement adding to the 'drama'........ Well either that and I just tried to be groovy Thanks in advance folks and don't mind the 70's pic's. I tampered with a 5 string for a short while but when the crunch came to selling the 4 or the 5 i kept the 4 just because I was tripping myself up - I basically needed more time with it but financial pressure meant I didnt have that luxury. However I did learn a few things whilst playing the 5 string.... I'd say DONT play it like a 4 string with an extra low b string, instead rework your bands song incorporating the low B. Basically relearn or rework the fingering of the songs so you have that added flexibility of going onto the B. We have a tune in 7/8 played in around A string C#. By shifting down and across to C# on the E I played the same pattern more or less but the notes had more weight to them - for me at least the desire to use the 5 string like this and make it a common feature of my playing meant i viewed the fretboard in a different way. I stumbled and hit the odd bum note but it soon became quite natural. I always thought that upright (UR) players approach the bass in a different way to electric players (doh obvious). What I mean is that while we naturally play in 'box shapes' I always thought of UR bassists playing diagonally back and across the strings, the bass line in So What springs to mind for no obvious reason, just in a more efficient manner. I kinda tried to play like this with a 5 string to minimise shifting about and it did make me think and play in a slightly different way. Bottom line from my experience is play the 5 string exclusively for a month, rethink your approach to songs you already know and try and play an hour each day just to get the feel of it. Dont over use the B string especially on lower notes as it could actually take away from the power of a three piece and just have fun with it. Best of luck!

The EBS seems like the middle ground loud enough but portable enough - I emails a retailer a while back asking for some first hand opinions and they basically told me not to get it!! Said it was more a studio amp but surely 90 'valve' watts would be useable live in smaller venues with pa support? The price is high for what it is but then who else is making anything in this range volume-wise? Be keen to hear if anyone has tried one out?

Kevin bought a Aguilar Db410 from me nd was a total gent. I just bought an Aguilar GS112 from him and again it was a hassle free deal. Nice guy who knows 'everyone'!! Enjoy that MM when you get your hands on it. Sounds like a beauty! I've used this line before in fb threads but if Kevin has some gear for sake you want - go for it. Top bloke!
