Recording bass onto my MacBook - what do I need to get started?
krispn replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Recording
The only thing I'd add is be sure and set the input source correctly so can can hear your bass in both speakers/headphones. I was a total noob and couldn't get to grips with not being able to hear 'stereo'. I figured it out eventually Good luck with your new set up -
I had the pleasure of holding this bass a few years ago as a guitar store in Belfast, Guitar Emporium, had been tasked with creating a mock up of this bass for the statue of Phil on Harry Street - it was my old '78 P bass they used which was then cased in bronze and fitted to the statue. I'm very proud of this fact

Is it essential to have a capacitor in my basses?
krispn replied to StevieD_FenderP2009's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hey there It's important to remember that the tone control on any bass is effectively a roll off control. Its like turning a tap at your sink - when your tone control is turned all the way up your signal is going straight out of the bass to your amp and 'not' affecting the tone just like if your tap was turned on. However the tap itself naturally has an effect on the flow of the water due to it's size, its diameter and just simply by virtue of it being there. If you didn't have the tap connected you might get a different flow of water, maybe a fast uncontrolled stream or jet of water and certainly one you had no control over. Likewise with cap's - without one you could expect a tone that was 'hot', and uncontrollable in the sense that it wasn't connected to a control knob. Remember just by having cap's in your circuit they will have an effect to your tone. Therefore its natural to think that the size of the cap then determines how much tone gets through to your amp although when you tone knob is wide open you 'shouldn't' hear any difference to your tone. If your after the Steve Harris tone I'm sure there is much info and spec sheets outlining his wiring preference, caps used etc. If its any consolation..... I just recently changed the cap in my USA P Bass to a paper in oil cap, a 0.1uF and for my needs its a really great cap. It just sounds good to my ears - I normally use it to tame a little top end off my round wound strings. Someone mentioned that the tone know is a throwback to a bygone age now that amps, pedals and multi FX are so complex and that is a valid point. However for me and my style I can get the tonal variety right at my fingertips with a little tweak of the tone control. I enjoy the feel and tone of flatwounds but they don't always suit the songs I play in the band. The tone control and the 0.1uF allows me to get the nice bassy tone I like plus with the twist of the control can give more definition with the tone wide open. I have a spare paper in oil cap (its a brute) but should fit into your control cavity if you want to try it out? Hit me with a PM and I'll send it to ya if you like. -

Here it goes..... the standard rock bass cab! What more needs to be said. This is one large solid cab that will work for everything - its got speakon and 1/4" speak inputs, tweeter control and it's front ported to give that extra low down ooomph The cab has some slight peeling to the tolex which is purely from it being lifted in and out of the flight case tray - which is provided in the total cost. Cab is available for demo in Edinburgh and I'm after £375.87p PM for details if you're interested

I find myself in a similar position - recently tried a 5 for the first time and really liking the low b - I've noticed for some of my bands songs its not always better to go lower but some tunes really benefit from the lower notes. I'm currently playing a G&L USA that my buddy has kindly loaned me and as a comparison tried a few out others at GuitarGuitar - a Lakland Skyline 55-02 which felt great, maybe the longer scale length, but I'd need a lesson in figuring out how to fine tune the eq as Im a P bass guy at heart. Played a Sadowsky and really enjoyed the tone but the price is waaay prohibitive - an OBP-1 preamp would help get the tone in a more sensibly priced bass. I also tried a new fender Jazz V and really liked the feel and tone. Seems you have made your decision on what to spend your green on but and I look forward to playing the 5'er a bit more and trying a few more basses before officially taking the plunge. I also really enjoyed playing the 4 string after the 5. Felt like a whole new bass to me! A joyous thing indeed.!

**The price of the pre remains the same as an individual sale but the total rig is now £750** Those interested in the complete rig will get preference due to the hassle of selling a power amp on it's own! PM for any other details Hey 2nd time round This is my current live rig and its fantastic! I tried to do a video review but my mobile phone recording just didn't do any justice to the tone and man what a tone. I can drive this pre to give me edgy - not SVT but a great driven pick tone, I can engage the deep switch for reggae and bass heavy tones, cut the mid and engage the treble to get a nice slap tone, keep it flat to hear my bass come through or do whatever I need to and with a few seconds have the tone Im after. The famous Aguilar OBP 1 is basically the Deep and Bright switches that are built into this pre amp for boosting those freq's. The EQ on this is voiced so well that any setting is good, maybe not the tone you want but not a 'bad tone' - it like listening to your favourite singer - you might not like the song but the voice is still beautiful. With the Mullards that I currently have fitted I'm after £850 posted for the rig - minus the Mullards £800 The pre on its own is the question I have been asked the most so I'm saying £425 from the advice I have been given. Postage will be quite cheap on the pre due to it's light weight. Ok so the info is pasted below: Equalization: Treble: Tube driven shelving type, boosts up to 12 db. The center frequency is set at 4 kHz. Bass: Tube driven shelving type, boosts up to 12 db. The center frequency is set at 40 Hz. Midrange: Tube driven shelving centered at 400 Hz. Deep Switch: The deep switch adds 3db of broadband boost at 30 Hz. Bright Switch: This switch is passive RC pre-emphasis circuit at 5-7 kHz. The bright switch will add a brighter timbre to the entire range of your bass. Effects Loop: The Send pot is push/pull for line or instrument level. This allows you to use a studio effects unit (line level) or a stomp box (requires instrument level) in the FX loop. Adjust the amount of send so as to get maximum performance from your effects unit. Don’t give the FX so much level as to overdrive it. The parallel/series pot is push/pull for parallel or series operation. In the parallel mode affected signals are mixed to the dry sound. In series mode the entire sound of your bass is processed by the effects in the loop. The amount of effects can be adjusted with the return pot. If you pull the return pot out for series operation without any effects plugged in the loop, the loop will be open and no sound will result. PM for any further questions. I have pic's but cant seem to transfer them from my mobile - some dodgy bluetooth issues! I'm working on it nd can text the pics but its the same pre as on the google image search - real clean and life in a rack case. Thanks gavin

My band have started doing a mash up which I am confident noone else does. We call it Sharona's Toxic Love Shack! Its the My Sharona riff played as an intro then we keep the rhythm going to the chord progression of Toxic by Ms Spears as well as the lyrics....stay with me... then we sing the chorus of LoveShack by the B-52's to the rhythm of Toxic as the chorus. We go back into the Toxic/Sharona verse and we include the LoveShack break-down. in the middle. We always get a great response but that could be more to do with people recognising the song among our set of self penned tunes We also did a mean cover of Carol of the Bells at a christmas gig last year with 4 part vocal harmony and it sounded chilling - that was added to the end of one of our own tunes and made for quite the set finisher! If you're in Edinburgh tomorrow night you can come hear Sharona's Toxic Love Shack in the wee red bar@ the Art College along with some other awesome tunes

I have a V Type combo for sale/trade if you wanna go down that route
-
Hey this ain't Fedner but it might give you something like what you're after - probably expensive though. I think its based on the Baxandal type tone circuit and ultimately going for the Ampeg B15 vibe more than Fender I'm currently using a valve drive and plan to run it through the power amp only this wed night at practice just to hear how it sounds. www.barberelectronics.com/linden.html Or you could buy your ex the V Type combo from me

Yeah I just saw a poster for the SeaBass Kid gig today up in Morningside and was wondering who they were. Strange coincidence that! OK well if we can tie things up early at the WRB I might grab the band and hut Bannermans - we love a bit of Classic 90's! Good luck with the gigs! g

tell me about it! had a guy very recently tell me that he wasn't micing the bass amp - a 65w monster- but that it was ok as none of the amps were mic'd. After sound check and right before the gig I saw that the guitar amps were mic'd but not the bass amp nor was it D.I.'d and the sound man thought this was ok a 65w practice amp on stage with full drums, two guitar amps and all the rest. Make ya wanna weep. I'll be sure and bring the ampeg 410 to sneakys so I can be heard either way. Cheers for the heads up and if you're in town come down and say hello or make it to the wee red bar on the 25th for cheap booze and some killer tunes from J!PA G

The guy who was waiting appears to be a bit of a time waster - he has been requesting other sellers to hold their gear for him so I'm not the only one to be let down by this total c*ck. Oh well you live you learn. Had some request for the pre only so I have contacted all the guys who have expressed interest - should be back in touch within the next few days - and those who asked first will be replied to first - as promised. bump

Hi there Some may recognise me, most won't. Been on here for about a year and never really pimped the band but we're on the verge of getting a van and taking this stuff out to the masses. Got some local gig's lined up, the highlight being a Halowe'en show on the 30th October which features some of the best bands in Edinburgh at the minute. I digress..... Here is a link to our home made demo, recorded all around our singers flat including the wardrobe...or the vocal booth as it was known for the duration! The tunes are 'Angry-Pop' and we have some killer new things in the pipeline a 7/8 latin groove with a suitably chunky chorus and break down? Oh yeah we went there! Add comments as you see fit - constructive is always better than one word slam dunks but most of all I hope you enjoy it. nice to see Ronson has got a new haircut, new band and doing the vampire weekend/ two step/80's retro thing....not! Nice Hellborg rig though! Jools has hit a difficult point over the last few years as newer bands are trying out lots of different sounds - and not what the mass audience would like to hear. Its good to see bands getting some airplay - just a shame so many of them are not what I like but ultimately I'd rather watch a season of Later... (albeit on iPlayer so I can forward what I'm not digging) than not have it on TV. Lets face it we can spotify or youtube any music we like - it's nice to be exposed to music I don't normally listen to - even if I choose to forward it. But Phil Collins!!!!!!!!!

Hey My understanding is that the older cans were 400w and rated at 4ohm. I could be wrong but when I got my SVT Classic I was told it was more desirable at the time due it being the HLN with speakon and an extra 100w power handling than the 'normal' cabs which were 400w. Try the ampeg site in the support or manual section. Good Luck!

Hey! Up for sale is a very well loved (tatty) Trace Elliot combo. While the covering may be a little road-worn its essentially in a 8/10 condition and the internal workings are clean as a whistle - I know this as the amp is as quiet as you'd expect plus I had it given the once over by my tech buddy. I'm adding a link to the OP from a while back that contain picture of a higher quality than I can generate right now - hope you don't mind mr p http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...hl=trace+elliot The cab is available for a try out in Edinburgh if your interested. Don't be fooled by the output - it's plenty loud and I wish I had it at my gig last night ....seriously a 65 watt bass practice amp and not even DI'd (f**king nonsense) to play with two 100watt guitar amps and full drum kit! I digress....... Price is £375 and Im not really after trades unless you have a decent cab - I'm hoping to get a more lightweight modular set up so that should give you an idea of trades. G

Hey chatters and lurkers! **Cab is in Edinburgh** The classic SVT 410 cab - this model was the first to incorporate the speakon connector, hence the HLN (N for neutrik?) and is now more commonly known as the HLF This cab has 500w/1000w peak power output/handling and runs at 4 ohms for maximum output. There is some slight peeling on the tolex covering due in part to natural wear and the removal in and out of the flight case- I'll include pic's later tonight. This cab is, for me, the ideal rock bass cab and delivers! However, having gigged last night and not able to bring my own rig due to the promoter say there was a 'bass rig' I found myself playing through a 65 watt practice amp. I need to get a smaller cab I can bring to gigs so I can hear myself and get a half decent tone out of! It's sad but thats how it goes - it soul destroying playing with a great practice room rig and not being able to take it out to gigs Pic's to follow later today PM question and I'll do my best to answer them. G

My 2 cents I had a '78 P bass a few years back in my old band. Got some really decent growl going thru an Ashdown head but what a neck! It twas big. I have played a Lakland BG or 64 I think they are calling it now but its neck was very 'modern' yet familiar its a Lakland so known for their neck profiles - slimmer yet wider than my current bass - an 08 USA Fender and I have to say the Fender from the 08 upgrades are really nice. For me it feels right sounds great (however I did just put a Nordstrand in mine tho the Fender stock p/u did look to be pretty solidly built, ever so slight overwind, good thick quality wires) The new USA's are well worth a look and well within your budget - after that its basically a matter of personal preference and if you wanna spend £1500 just to spend the money. I know of a 79 P bass, immaculate condition, literally been hiding under a bed in a case for the last 30 years with absolute minimal wear that you could get for about £1300. Its got a big P neck but that same classic tone and oomph. I'd go so far as to say this particular example is commanding! Good luck and keep us posted of you quest G

Seen these on the EBS site and having on of the Valve Drive pedals it appeals to me. With the 65 Amp Apollo, the Ashdown Little Bastard and this are we seeing a new trend for the small power studio bass head? I know I've used a MiniMat for a few years for home jamming and recording but like the idea of something bigger but not huge. Not sure how practical it would be in the grand scheme but I digress..... Any info appreciated and I'm guessing its based on the Fender Bassman circuit?

I've an Eden power amp for sale - buit in '98 and its been solid, reliable and without a hitch since I got it. Fashion dictates what the value of gear is not reliability or performance it would seem unless you're after the best you can get for the money/job. I went Eden as it was Bass power amp by a bass amp builder not a generic (though it would hardly matter I suppose) It has some great features and unlike the SWR power amp I had before it has never let me down. I was very disappointed in the SWR but once companies change hands their initial valuse can becime diluted - big business and all that! So if anyone wants to buy an eden power amp
